Just 10 days to go now until we know the 2024 premiers. Just four possible winners. Just two days until we narrow that down to two.
Week 2 of the finals had its fair share of interesting moments. The conspiracy theorists from the far north found plenty to store away in their memory banks when the Sharks raced out to an early 12 point lead. The penalty try to Trindall after a Cotter indiscretion was contentious to say the least. I thought Dearden was in sufficient proximity to cast doubt on the decision but the Bunker seemed to pull the trigger very quickly. Then scrutiny of the second try appeared not to consider whether or not Mulitalo was onside before he became involved in the contested ball. 12-0 is a long was behind in a final but there was plenty of time still available if the Cowboys were good enough. The killer came just before the break to make it 24-0 and, essentially, game over. A brave second half fightback was commendable but, on the balance of play, the Sharks deserved their win. Trindall drew all the praise but it was the much improved effort by the pack and the consequent time and space afforded to Trindall and Hynes that made all the difference.
Then the Roosters dominated a Sea Eagles outfit who looked like they used up too much petrol the previous week and carried a couple of unfit players into the game. Led by Victor the Inflictor up front and with Teddy leading and lurking everywhere, the Chooks were just too good from go to whoa.
On to Week 3 and tomorrow night features the relentless Storm up against the resurgent Roosters at AAMI Park. At the risk of repeating myself, the key to the game is Harry Grant. If Harry fires, it’s all over; if he doesn’t, then it’s a more even game. But, either way, only a fool tips against the Storm. They should be fit and raring to go. Their pack is the equal is any and too often underrated. Hughes, Munster, Paps, Warbrick, Coates…plenty to like there. But then, as always, there’s Teddy who just will not die wondering. Can JWH control himself 2 weeks in a row? Is Victor fit enough to get through consecutive games? Can Smith hold his own against Hughes? I think there are more questions about the Roosters than there are about Melbourne so I’ll go for the Storm.
On Saturday night it’s the irresistible Panthers against the revitalised Sharks. No-one in their right mind could possibly tip against the Panthers and, with all due respect to the lads from the Shire, that’s all I’ve got to say. Penrith by how much?
In the NRLW, the Broncos won their seventh game in a row to pip the Roosters for the minor premiership. The Knights continued their return to form to secure third spot, but the shaky Sharks are in worrying form going into the finals after losing to the wooden spooners.
In Week 1 finals clashes on Sunday afternoon, the Broncos lead off against the Sharks. Form says Brisbane comfortably but finals footy is a whole new ball game. But can you possibly back the Sharks who haven’t looked like winning in the last month? Watch big match specialist Brigginshaw step up to lead Brisbane into another grand final.
Then the Roosters take on the Knights in what should be one of the games of the season. Both sides have been in good recent form and we could see a high scoring match. But will Isabelle Kelly play? If she doesn’t then the experienced Knights are hot favourites. Something tells me that the defending premiers will prove to be too strong so I suggest you get on Newcastle.
