New book: Miracle Match

Miracle Game Ken Piesse

Northern bricks salesman Wally Clark only ever got to coach in the big-time once, but what a day it was – cellar dwellers Fitzroy defeating ultimate premiers Geelong at the old Brunswick St. Oval in its only win of the 1963 League season.

And it came without the club’s inspirational captain-coach Kevin Murray who was in Adelaide representing Victoria

Just over 50 years on, Wally’s perfect record is being celebrated all over again among the Fitzroy boys from 1963 with the publication of Miracle Match, the day David downed Goliath, at the old Brunswick St Oval on July 6.

The hero, trainee teacher Bryan Clements in only his 12th match, dimmed the brilliant Polly Farmer in the game of his life, Clark’s inspirational pre-match and half-time addresses with the home fans packed into the rooms pivotal in an adrenalin surge none of the players have ever forgotten.

They are all gathering on Wednesday night, July 16 from 7 p.m. at the Fitzroy Bowling Club to celebrate the game. Murray, Clements, Norm Brown, John Bahen and Co are all in their 70s now but just as keen on their footy. “It is a bit different though to the way we used to play it,” said Muzz, Fitzroy’s favorite playing son
