The winners – first, second and third prizes – of the 2025 Furphy Literary Award will be announced at the Shepparton Arts Museum this coming Saturday night, July 26.
Here at The Footy Almanac, we congratulate two of our writers, Damian ‘Dips’ O’Donnell and Emma Westwood who have made it on to the short list. We wish them well on Saturday evening.
If you would like to come along, please let John Harms know by text message: 0417 635030.
Here’s a little more about Dips and Emma…

Kate Birrell’s portrait of Dips, painted for his fiftieth birthday.
Dips is a fine observer of life and story-teller. Read his Almanac contributions HERE.

Emma was an editor and advisor for The Footy Almanac, along with hubby Stone Cold Steve Baker. Visit Emma Westwood’s website and find out about her rich and diverse literary career HERE.
She is also a much-loved broadcaster.
And academic.

Best of luck, Emma and Dips. Fingers are crossed for you both.
Cheers Smoke. If we come a draw it might come down to an arm wrestle. I’ve been in the gym all week.
Good luck Dips. You are the pride of the Cats’ interchange bench so “stand up and fight like hell!”

This is just wonderful.
Very happy for you Dips & Emma.
Waaay way back, the very first story of yours that I read on The Footy Almanac site, Dips, was hilarious – tears of laughter funny. It was called “Bloody Daicos!” 2013. Still here for them all.

Good on ya ER. Appreciate the support.
I still remember that fez party!
Thanks for everyone’s well-wishes. I couldn’t be more excited.
Dips—you, me, carpark!
We didn’t get the prize and the money but we had a great time not doing so!
And we had no reason to arm wrestle.
