Local cricket: F Grade injustice!

Where is DRS when you need it? David Bridie was involved in a run out on the weekend. Or so he thought.

The umpire ruled not out. The photographic evidence suggests otherwise.

David was reminded of the Brady Bunch episode where Greg Brady takes a photograph of a college football touchdown and has proof that a decision was wrong. We suspect the umpire was more of a Partridge Family fan.

David’s mood was not improved by the fact the batsman concerned had twice previously top-edged skiers between the field, off David’s bowling.

Do you have your own tale of local cricket woe? Need to vent on the iniquities of umpiring justice? Or just your teammates’ dreadful catching? Feel free to share.

Phil Hill is at it again.

  2. This post is going to open Pandora’s Can of Worms. Injustices galore should be forthcoming and most will top the post. Photos inconclusive in my view. Same fieldsman at square leg saving one dropped two catches in 2 consecutive balls from the same batsman (both dollies) off my bowling in SACA D grade many many years ago. Dunno what made me recall it . . . .

  3. Photo doesn’t show if the bowler caught the ball and then took the bails off or whether he had knocked the bail off before the ball got there damning but not inconclusive evidence in my book.
It does remind me of a semi final where the team batting were umpiring re square leg we comprehensively ran a guy out got given not out batsman was on 4 made 72 cost us the game it was in 83 I’ll get over it eventually cough cough

I’m believer in the law of averages, for every bad decision that goes against you, you get one that goes your way. I suppose the important aspect is the context of the decision with regards to the balance of the match. Was it made at a critical stage in the game? And what or how much bearing the decision has on the final result.

  5. For me, the saddest thing about this post is that I actually remember the referenced Brady Bunch episode.

  6. You’re such an umpire Rulebook.

For me it’s that David Bridie is still playing in a grade high enough that someone in any way associated with the game (player, spectator, supporter,passer-by) remains coordinated enough to snap a timely photo.

Smoke, I think we need to put it out there: name a Brady Bunch episode. I’ll start: the pork chops and apple sauce H. Bogart episode. Others?

  7. How about the episode in which the kids (girls v boys) were building a card house on the lounge-room table. Then Jan’s bangle knocked down a few of the cards. Greg said “Bad luck – anything goes”, but later got his come-uppance when the dog knocked him into the card-house and the whole thing tumbled down.

  8. I nominate the Hawaii episodes in which the tiki seemingly causes bad luck for the bunch including Greg’s surfing mishap and then of course the whole tarantula subplot which was as terrifying as the BB got.

  9. Yes, I remember the Hawaii ep, Mickey.

What about the episode in which the kids had formed a singing group. Alas, Peter’s voice was breaking and he was on the verge of being excluded from the recording studio. Until Greg came up with the ingenious idea to incorporate Peter’s changing voice into the lyrics of the song! Just brilliant television.

  10. Well played,JTH thank you I need a laugh at the moment

  11. Yes, Smokie. I can hear the song Time to Change and the key verses-

The same is true for voices
    When boys begin to grow
You gotta take a lesson from Mother Nature
And if you do you’ll know

When it’s time to change (when it’s time to change)
Don’t fight the tide, go along for the ride
    Don’t ya see
When it’s time to change, you’ve got to rearrange
Who you are and what you’re gonna be.

As you can see, there’s a reason Bob Dylan continued to sleep well.

  13. Yes Mickey, it is now obvious just why Lennon and McCartney dissolved their relationship. They must have said “We can’t do better than this…”

  14. David Bridie says

i am so pleased that my game of F grade cricket has brought about a plethora of Brady Bunch memories. id liek to add the Davy Jones episode as a favourite. And also i took it cleanly and knocked off just the one bail.id like to say that i meant to be so clean, but it was a fluke

  15. My bowling average of 4.00 did not give me the bowling trophy in circa 1986-87 in B2 grade. Some stupid rule about bowling more than 2 overs for the season and taking more than 1 wicket. Totally unfair. Who makes up rules like this? I deserve my trophy. Average per wicket 4.00. Winner’s average 13.93. I rest my case. Huge injustice, must be rectified.
