Almanac Teams: Last Game Debuts

Coming up to the last round, this week’s team is based on players making their debut in the last game of the home and away season. I have included players that debut in the last round that would play finals that year in which Collingwood had three players. Often a last round debut is a reward for player who is in a team that cannot play finals and they get a chance to show their wares. Some players only played one career game so maybe it was their chance just to at least say they played one game. Some of the interesting names on here are the AFL games holder and a set of brothers who would later captain each of their clubs, but also two players that played for either Sydney and Western Bulldogs and have shared the same name – Sam Reid.

  1. G’day Rod; you keep them coming..

Scott Morphett’s league debut/career was Geelong’s 1985 R22 victory over Fitzroy at Victoria Park. Subsequently he crossed the border for a lengthy career with Woodville/West Torrens.

Stephen Kerley made his debut for Melbourne in R22, 1971. This match saw Melbourne travel to Glenferrie Oval to take on league leaders Hawthorn. Kerley had a touch of the yips kicking for goal finishing with 0.4: no debut goal for him. A bloke for Hawthorn also had the yips with his goal kicking, with seven times the goal umpire waving one white flag when he kicked for goal; he also got a few majors. His name was Peter Hudson, and he kicked a lazy 10.7 that day.

    Glen!

  2. Thanks Glen
Completely forgot to add Scott Morphett, good pick up.
Your memory is really good, I see it took until Round 22 the following year for Kerley to kick a goal

  3. Alex Forster says thanks for a mention

  4. Luke Reynolds says

I was at Dwane Griffin’s only game, the day Princess Diana died.

Good to see South Colac’s David Strooper get a mention.

    Another great idea and team!

  5. Thanks Rulebook & Luke.
Is Strooper the Best ever player from South Colac

  6. Luke Reynolds says

As good as Strooper was, I think Steve Baker, a member of South Colac’s 1997 premiership team before going on to play 203 games for St Kilda, would hold that mantle.
