How the west was won (by the Almanackers)
First Footy Almanac meeting in Perth, Sunday November 10, 2024
Fantasy football leagues, newspapers, books, key sports fan moments, and writing projects were among the topics of conversation at the Footy Almanac’s first meeting of the WA branch. A small but engaging group gathered at the old Floreat Hotel (now a Sporting Globe bar) Sunday night after Australia’s eight-wicket loss to Pakistan in Perth.
Calling it a formal meeting might be a stretch, as it was a group of like-minded people sitting around a table, having a few beers, and discussing sports. Some have tentatively arranged to meet at Optus Stadium for those attending the Perth Test. Each month, one member (if they feel comfortable) will share a book or web article, or sporting moment that has significance to them before moving on to general sports chat.
Any WA Almanackers interested in joining the group for monthly catch up please email Barry Nicholls at: [email protected]

Barry, ‘from little things big things grow’!
Good luck to the Almanac’s western outpost and all who man it. (FA Troop – Footy Almanac Troop, that is.)
Barry – Ian’s Kev Carmody/Paul Kelly reference above seems apt!
What a great initiative – enjoy your next meeting (hopefully the Aust test team performs far better than their ODI counterparts!)
Perhaps a gathering for the NRL origin game in 2025 (18 June)?!
Rabbit in the Vineyard
Next the world!
Where is PB?
Down south playing golf in the Harvey Open for the weekend. Look forward to participating in future. Great initiative by Barry et al. Connection and community are the best antidote we have to toxic social media and mental and moral decay.
Well done to all involved. I’m sure the concept will fly! Good job, Barry and company.
Great work Bazza and friends.
Looking forward to reading more especially if your State can be as friendly in sending as many talented footballers to the Cats in coming years as you have in the past.
Give me a yell if you are ever over GTown way.
Best wishes,
RDL
Well done Bazz. Things seem a bit more relaxed in the West. We seem all too busy at the moment to organise anything here. Perhaps you could initiate when you next visit.
Very nice, indeed!!
I had the pleasure of having lunch with Pete B John Stevenson and Fitzroy Pete over there on holiday. What a fascinating crew they are. I’d love to join you next time I’m in Perth Barry. A great initiative.
T’was great to meet you back in January, Ian, and I’ve enjoyed your coverage of a wide range of topics in the 10 months since.
Well played Bazz – about time we organised a function here in SA – everyone is welcome this Sat night at a sportsman’s night for a fantastic cause at Payneham cc which JTH and myself are hosting
