first game of the year
arriving at the ground
too early
early lead
recalling last year’s
early lead
so humid
the defensive line
fans out
windless afternoon –
Harry’s dreadlocks
still swinging
one more drops into the hole Barry fills
no sweat
Medhurst plucks the ball
from the muggy air
wherever he goes
Johnno bows to the pull
of his left
rushed behind –
Didak grabs it
before it’s there
leaving the stadium –
the cackle
of magpies

About rob scott
Rob Scott (aka Haiku Bob) is a peripatetic haiku poet who calls Victoria Park home. He writes haiku in between teaching whisky and drinking English, or something like that.
Welcome back HB. I trust the ’09 tears have been wiped away. Your fine re-entry into the season is aiding in my recovery. Is the “cackle” of magpies leaving the stadium the sound they were making or a new and welcome collective noun?
fits,
it could be described as hubristic chortling.
