In 1948 when Melbourne defeated Essendon (after a replay, grrrrr), they wrote a new verse for their theme song that reads:
“Oh the Demons they were great,
In the year 48,
Because we didn’t just know how to lose.
And it was thanks to Norm and Jack,
That we got the flag back,
And gave it to Checker Hughes.
Every heart beats true
For the red and the blue
And we sing this song to you
Should auld acquaintance be forgot
Keep your eye on the red and the blue!”
So to honour this tradition, here is a new verse to celebrate the 2021 flag!
“Oh the Demons they had fun,
In the year twenty one,
When over to Perth they did roam.
And they really did the job,
When they ran around the dogs
And bought the cup back home.
Every heart beats true
For the red and the blue
And we sing this song to you
Should auld acquaintance be forgot
Keep your eye on the red and the blue!”
