Grand Final 2019: Another small miracle?

by Dan Hoban

2017 was a mini-miracle for us Richmond folk. A surreal moment that had taken 37 years to materialise. Just as the moon landing was only experienced by those over 50 our last flag in 1980 was fondly remembered by only an older battalion of the Richmond army.

Names like Bartlett, Raines, and Weightman have been replaced by Martin, Prestia and Houli. TJ (Tony Jewell) has been supplanted by Dimma and the ARC was associated with Noah not score reviews.

The 37 year premiership hangover has finally been forgotten. Dimma has decreed that 2017 be a defining moment for the Tigers not a curiosity in history.

2018 saw Richmond out-foxed or rather out-Coxed by the Magpies in the Prelim. That happens in Finals.

So, what are our chances in the 2019 decider? Well one only needs to reflect back on 2016 to see how a team finishing outside the top four (the Bulldogs) can get on a roll. I don’t see The Giants repeating this fairytale though.

Their last quarter of football was actually quite ordinary, giving up a 33 point lead in the last quarter and then having to win ugly. So, the team of the west wont go into the game with that magical, intangible thing which is so important in footy: “momentum”. The Giants have always showed glimpses in their eight-year history that they could be the best team in the competion, but all too often fell short or failed to get the “hard ball”.

The Tigers are on their own roll having surged into the top four and then tamed the young Lions and fought off the Cats to qualify for the Grand Final.

I expect the Tigers to prevail by 30 points. But, if The Giants create their own history then footy’s the winner.
