Back in the good old days – round 9 to be exact – things were much simpler. Richmond was where they should be, just outside the eight, Adelaide and West Coast were top eight teams and Hawthorn and Geelong were equal top of the ladder. In the Gigs Ladder Comp, Michael Ba and Gavin T occupied the top two places, ahead of a bunch of seven in equal third place – Lou H, Jesse H, Leon C, Ted A, Peter M, Patrick K and Leslie H.
But time waits for no one and many things have changed in the eight rounds since. Here’s how those two months unfolded, ladder ladder-wise.
AFTER ROUND 10
James W took centre stage and the lead on 40 points.
Two behind him on 42 were Peter Ca, Geordie C, Theo Harms, Damian B, Paul L and Mick C.
At the other end of the scale, Lou and Yvette were locked at 156 apiece.
AFTER ROUND 11
Paul L had his moment in the sun, on 36 points.
Theo Harms sat in second place on 38.
And 2011 winner Lou H jumped into third spot on 40. Equal fourth on 42 were Geordie C, James W, The Holy Boot, Michael Ba, John B and Susie G.
Lou was 180th with 158 points and Yvette was 181st (160).
AFTER ROUND 12
Geordie C and Pete Ca shared the limelight, each on 40 points.
On 44 points in equal third place were Theo Harms, The Holy Boot and Paul L.
Lou was still 180th but up to 152 points and Yvette was still 181st, up to 154.
AFTER ROUND 13
Geordie C flew solo in top place on 40 points, with Pete Ca two behind.
Theo Harms was third (44 points) and Michael Ba was fourth (46 points).
In equal fifth place on 48 points were:
The Holy Boot, Paul L, last year’s winner Matthew W, Scott H and Keith B.
And Lou and Yvette were reunited at 148 points each.
AFTER ROUND 14
Geordie C maintained his lead on 42 points.
Theo Harms was second on 44.
Pete Ca was third on 46 and…
in equal fourth place on 48 were Michael Ba, The Holy Boot, Matthew W and Damian B.
And Lou and Yvette were locked together on 148 points each.
AFTER ROUND 15
Geordie tumbled to third, on 42 behind a resurgent Theo Harms and Pete Ca on 40.
Equal 4th were The Holy Boot and The Gentle Giant.
Lou jumped up to 179th spot, equal with the coach of the Verkhoyansk Vulcans, Yrag Legov. They were on 142, four clear of Yvette’s 146.
AFTER ROUND 16
Geordie struck back and joined Pete Ca back in the lead on 38, four clear of…
Theo Harms on 42 and The Holy Boot on 44.
Equal fifth on 46 were Lou H, Damian B, Scott H and Garry N.
Lou slipped back to 180th, her 146 points putting her two clear of Yvette.
And so, it’s come to this…
With six rounds plus finals to go, Geordie and Pete Ca are hanging on to top spot for grim life. They’re on 40 points, four clear of The Holy Boot, who just happens to be the brother of Pete Ca. We had a family affair with the Watsons in 2012 and we may yet have another in 2013.
And speaking of the Watsons, Matthew is waiting in the wings in fourth spot, along with Theo Harms, Michael Ba and Damian B. Those four are on 46. Ready to pounce on 48 points are Lou H, Scott H, Garry N, The Gentle Giant, Darren C, Peter M, Keith B, Jesse H, Leon C and Paul L.
Best of the so-called experts is none other than the head honcho of the equal greatest publishing company in the free world, Geoff Slattery. He’s on 52 points, in equal 25th place, four clear of his nearest expert rival Rohan Connolly.
And Lou and Yvette are together yet again in equal 180th place, on 148 points.

Could Theo please start writing the weekly Footy Tips column on Tatts Bet. His father’s tips are costing me a fortune.
“Thanks for nothing, Gigs,” I first thought, when I saw my seventy languishing down the list, a mere thirty off the pace. But, upon reflection, I think I am tracking nicely. When Essendon lose all their points, as they surely should, I’ll pick up 8 straight away when they tumble to bottom and another 8 as everyone else moves up. That will make me 56.
There’s still plenty of movement to come – Port and Richmond will slip a little; Adelaide and Collingwood will inch upwards. I think I still have twenty points to gain which will make me 36 and the one to beat.
T’will be interesting to see how many others find themselves upwardly mobile once The Flying Syringes are shot down in flames, eh? Never in the field of human conflict …………
