Footy names
No more games (for now), but we’ll always have the names.
Great work from Hugh Robertson at The Monthly magazine site.

About Almanac Admin

The Footy Almanac has for a number of years come up with articles about teams of players wearing certain numbers, as well as teams of players with specific first names.
The title of this article got me thinking of doing an alphabet football team, where the footy surnames start with a certain letter. In this case it will be the letter A.
Preference has been given to players who are better known or who have played a certain number of games, as well as their ability. The surname can only be used once.
Although Will Ashcroft has only played 44 games, he has achieved a lot, so far in his career, so he was included.
Some players were played out of position, so they can be included in the team, and some players were also included for team balance.
This is the VFL/AFL A Team:
B: Gary Ayres (Hawthorn), Aliir Aliir (Sydney/Port A), Glenn Archer (NM)

Let’s hope for a good game of football, where A Grade Talent will be on show!
The next letter is B. This was a more difficult task to select the team, as there were many more quality players with a surname starting B, than there was with A. Therefore, many good players missed out on the team.
Once again, preference was given for team balance, ability and the surname could only be used once.
This is the VFL/AFL B Team:

Let’s hope for a good game of football, with plenty of Entertainment!
As Blake Acres (Green Acres) was omitted for Carlton for tonight’s match against Brisbane, it got me thinking of doing a football team where each player’s surname is in the title of a well known television show.
The criteria is that the surname can only be used once and it doesn’t matter about the spelling. Preference has been given to better players and for team balance. Some players may have named out of position, so they could be included in the team.
This is the VFL/AFL Television Team:
B: Jake BAtCHELOR (Rich/The BACHELOR), Darcy MOORE (Coll/Mary Tyler MOORE Show), Mark BAYes (Syd/The BAY)

Let’s hope for a good game of football that’s made for television!
The recent team in the Footy Almanac, regarding a team of initials (eg. names with AA, BB, etc.) got me thinking about doing a composite football team where the surname of each player has a different letter of the alphabet.
The criteria is that each letter in the alphabet can only be used once and each letter can make up a complete team, when you include subs, interchange and emergencies.
Preference was given to better players, more current day players and team balance.
This is the VFL/AFL Alphabet Team:
B: Christian Salem (Melb), Harris Andrews (BL), Sam Taylor (GWS)
HB: Jason Johannisen (WB), Sam Fisher (St K), Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera (St K)
C: Keith Greig (North M), Lachie Neale (Fr/BL) (c), Dan Hannebery (Syd/St Kilda)

Let’s hope for a good game of football where there’s a letter to write home about!
The 6 goal match winning performance by Patrick Voss for Fremantle against Collingwood today, got me thinking about doing a football team where the players surnames are the same surnames of famous VFL/AFL players of the past, who played before them.
The criteria is that the surname can only be used once and it can’t be a relative of a famous player, even if that famous player has another relative who has played VFL/AFL football. For example, Darcy Moore’s father Peter played in the then VFL, but Kelvin Moore was a famous player, so Kelvin Moore has been included with Darcy Moore.
It also doesn’t matter if the players named in this team are better than their previous namesakes.
The spelling of the surname must be the same.
Some players were played out of position, so they were able to fit into the team.
This is the VFL/AFL team of famous players’ surnames:
B: Ben Matthews (Sydney S/Leigh), Darcy Moore (c) (Coll/Kelvin), Ben Hart (Adelaide/Royce)
HB: Guy McKenna (W Coast/Peter), Jack Buckley (GWS/Nathan), Joel Smith (St K/Haw/Ross)
C: Chad Fletcher (WC 1999-09/Ken), Lachie Neale (FremBL/Kevin), Peter Wilson (Rich/WC/Gary)
HF: Lachie Schultz (Frem/Coll/John), Mark Roberts (Syd/Bris/NM/Neil), Toby Greene (GWS/Russell)
F: Jeff Farmer (Melb/FremGraham), Tom Lynch (GC/Rich/Alastair), Oliver Dempsey (Geelong/Gary)
R: Toby Nankervis (Syd/Rich/Ian), Daniel Wells (North M/Coll/Greg), Matthew Knights (Richmond/Peter)
Interchange: Jason Blake (St K/Rod), Zak Jones (Syd/St K/Aussie), Mason Wood (NM/St K/Bryan), Toby Bedford (Melb/GWS/Peter)
Sub: Dean Greig (St K 1991-94/Keith)
Emergencies: Russell Reynolds (St K 1973-76/Dick), Patrick Voss (Frem 2024-present/Michael), Stefan Carey (Syd/BL/Wayne), Jacob Blight (Rich 2024-present/Malcolm)
Coach: Barry Davis (Ess/Bob)
This team will play a pretend exhibition match against their namesakes in brackets.
Venue: Any stadium with naming rights
Entertainment: “The Name of the Game”, by Abba and “A Horse With No Name”, by America
Let’s hope for a good game of football where the players can make a name for themselves!
As the Gold Coast SUNS have just qualified for their 1st FINAL, it got me thinking of doing of football team, where every player’s surname has SON as their FINAL 3 letters.
The surname can only be used once (not including the coach) and some players were played out of position, so they could fit in the team.
This is the VFL/AFL SONs Team:
B: Shane KerriSON (Collingwood ), Rod JamieSON (Adelaide), Josh GibSON (NM/Haw)
HB: Colin RobertSON (Haw), Lachie HenderSON (BL/Carl/Geel), Brenton SanderSON (Adel/Coll/Geel)
C: Kade SimpSON (Carlton), Wayne RichardSON (Collingwood), Alan JohnSON (Melbourne)
HF: Stephen MacPherSON (Foots), Luke JackSON (Melb/Frem), Jeremy FinlaySON (GWS/PA)
F: Mitch RobinSON (Carl/Bris Lions), Peter HudSON (Hawthorn), Mike PatterSON (Richmond)

Sub: Rick LadSON (Haw)
Emergencies: Clay Sampson (Melb/Adel/Rich), Jamie LawSON (Syd), Sam DavidSON (WB), Oren StephenSON (Geel/Rich)
Coach: Mark ThompSON (played Ess/coached Geel/Ess)
This team of SONs will play a pretend exhibition match against the Gold Coast SUNS.
Venue: People First Stadium (home ground of the Gold Coast SUNS)
Entertainment: Songs from Michael JackSON, Matthew and SON”, by Cat Stevens, “House of the Rising SUN”, by The Animals and “Here Comes the SUN”, by The Beatles
Transport: SunExpress
Let’s hope for a good game of football that’s played in the SUN!
The recent resigning of Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera by St Kilda got me thinking of doing a football team where each player’s first name is unusual for VFL/AFL players.
The criteria was each player’s first name could only be used once.
This is the VFL/AFL Team of Unusual First Names:
B: Jarman Impey (PA/Hawthorn), Aliir Aliir (Syd /Port Adel), Changkuoth Jiath (Haw)
HB: Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera (St Kilda), Leek Aleer (GWS), Bohdan Jaworskyj (Haw)
C: Chance Bateman (Haw) (c), Spiro Kourkoumelis (Carl/St K), Massimo D’Ambrosio (Ess/Haw)

Coach: Alphonsus “Phonse” Kyne (Coll)
This team will play a pretend exhibition match against the VFL/AFL Team of Multicultural Surnames.
Venue: Ninja Stadium (Bellerive, Tasmania)
Entertainment: Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga
Let’s hope for a good game of football where the players can make a name for themselves!
With Tasmania set to join the AFL in a few years, it got me thinking of doing a football team where a part or all the players’ surnames resememble one of the VFL/AFL teams when the whole line of names are put together. eg NORTHey, MILBURN and ROOS put together are NORTH MELBOURNE ROOS.
The spelling of the surnames doesn’t matter as long as it either sounds or is spelt similar to the team in question.
Most of the players have been named out of position, so that their names could fit together on a certain line.
This is the VFL/AFL team of VFL/AFL Teams!:
CARLTON BLUE BOYS
B: Phil CARLTON (South Melb 1975), Russell BLEW (Ess 1960-68), Ron BOYS (Carl/Haw 1943-49)

This team will play an exhibition match against the VFL/AFL Play on Words Team (eg KICKett, BALL, TWOMEY i.e. KICK BALL TO ME!)
Venue: Glenferrie Oval (Both Glen and Ferry can be surnames)
Entertainment: Various Football Club Songs
Let’s hope for an entertaining game of football with plenty of PLAYING ON!
As today is the last day of the AFL TRADE period, it got me thinking of doing a football team where each player has either AFL or TRADE in either his first name, surname, or a combination of his first name and surname. These letters don’t have to be in order, as long as these letters appear somewhere in their name.
Some players were played out of position, so they could fit in the team.
This is the VFL/AFL Team of AFL/TRADE:
B. Kristian Bardsley (NM/St K/T 1st name/RADE surname), Trent Croad (Haw/Frem/TR 1st name/AD surname/E 1st name), Darren Flanigan (Geel/St K/AFL in his surname)
HB: Nathan Foley (Rich/A in his 1st name/FL in his surname), Ian Fairley (North Melbourne AFL in his surname), Adrian Fletcher (Geel/St K/BB/BL/Frem/A 1st name/FL surname)
C: Alex Fasolo (Coll/Carl/A in 1st name/FL in surname), Finn Callaghan (GWS/A surname/F 1st name/L surname), Lachie Fogarty (Geel/Carl/AF in his surname/L in his first name)
HF: Lance Franklin (Hawthorn/Sydney/AFL in his surname), Warren Tredrea (c) (PA/TRADE in his surname), Milan Faletic (St Kilda/AFL in his surname)
F: Peter Daicos (Coll/TR 1st name/AD surname/E 1st name), Jeremy Finlayson (GWS/PA/AFL in surname), Ryan Fitzgerald (Syd/Adel/AFL in surname)
R: Graeme Fellowes (Coll/A in 1st name/FL in his surname), Sam Flanders (GC/St Kilda/AFL in surname), Paul Feltham (North Melb/AFL in surname)
Playing Coach: Paul Feltham (AFL in surname)
This team will play a pretend exhibition match against the VFL/AFL Team of VFL/AFL Teams, named in the above comment.
Venue: Uni-Trade Stadium, Laredo, Texas
Entertainment: Entertainment for Trade Shows
Let’s hope for a good game of football that you either wouldn’t TRADE it for anything, or you wouldn’t TRADE it for the world!
Hallo Anon, just looking at your September 18 side there’s a name missing.
Setanta O hAilpin.
Can you find a place for him?
Glen!
Good pick up Glen.
I have decided to put Sentanta O hAilpin as the Sub for the VFL/AFL Team of Unusual First Names, as he is versatile, in that he can play as a tall forward or as a back up ruckman.
I couldn’t find a place for him in the starting 18, as Lazar Vidovic needs to be the ruckman, Mabior Chol has been playing consistently well at centre half forward lately and Calsher Dear has averaged just over a goal a game as a tall forward.
Therefore Luaman Lual has been demoted from the Sub to an emergency.
It’s been brought to my attention that Farren Ray (WB/St K/NM) is another player who’s missing from the VFL/AFL Team of Unusual First Names. He has been added to wing for this team, and Massimo D’Ambrosio has been demoted to the interchange bench.
It’s been brought to my attention that Steele Sidebottom (Coll) is another player who’s missing from the VFL/AFL team of Unusual First Names. This was an oversight. He has now been selected in the centre, and Spiro Kourkoumelis has been demoted to the interchange bench.
As there is no longer a Sub, the interchange change bench will now be Spiro Kourkoumelis, Sentanta O’hAlpin, Majak Daw, Buku Khamis and Taj Woewodin. The emergencies are Koltyn Tholstrup, Luaman Luai, Zephaniah Skinner, Shadeau Brain and Tew Jiath.
This got me thinking about doing an equivalent Australian Test Team of Unusual First Names:
Usman Khawaja
Kepler Wessels (c)
Marnus Labuschagne (wk)
Moises Henriques
Kurtis Patterson
Dirk Wellham
Hilton Cartwright
Ashton Agar
Jhye Richardson
Xavier Doherty
Jackson Bird
12th man: Chadd Sayers
Concussion Sub: Cooper Connolly
Emergencies: Bryce McGain
Coach: Waqar Younis (He was hired as a temporary bowling and fielding coach for a Pakistan tour of Australia in 2009-2010, not as a permanent member of the Australian staff.)
Marnus Labuschagne was named as the wicketkeeper because no one else had any wicketkeeping experience. Marnus Labuschagne has been known to wear gloves in unusual practice or warm-up situations.
Although some of these names are not generally uncommon, they have been uncommon for Test cricketers. Of course, there’s also Ashton Turner and Xavier Bartlett, but neither of those players have played Test cricket for Australia.
This team will play a pretend exhibition match against the team of Australian Test Players with Common First Names:
Mark Taylor
Michael Slater
Ian Chappell (c)
Greg Chappell
David Hookes
Andrew Symonds
Steve Rixon (wk)
Paul Reiffel
Peter Siddle
Nathan Lyon
Graham McKenzie
12th man: John Dyson
Concussion Sub: Gary Gilmour
Coach: Bob Simpson
Venue: People First Stadium, Carrara, Qld
Entertainment: The Songs, “Sweet Caroline”, by Neil Diamond and “Billie Jean”, by Michael Jackson
Let’s hope for a good game of cricket where every player can make a name for themselves!
Due to the surprise trade in the recent AFL Trade Period of former St Kilda captain Jack Steele from St Kilda to Melbourne, it got me thinking of a current football team, where all players have played for 3 AFL clubs or in the case of Jack Steele and Will Brodie, should play for their third club in 2026.
In the case of Joel Hamling, he was on Geelong’s list, but never played a senior game for them, but subsequently played for Western Bulldogs, Fremantle and Sydney, so he’s eligible for this team.
In the case of Tom Campbell, he played in the seniors for Western Bulldogs, North Melbourne and St Kilda but after a year on Melbourne’s list, he’s yet to play a senior game for them, so he’s also eligible for this team.
Those who are no longer eligible for this team are the 3 club players who are no longer on their club’s list for 2025. Those players who have departed are James Aish (Brisbane/Collingwood/Fremantle), Rory Atkins (Adelaide/Gold Coast/Port Adelaide), Sam Frost (GWS/Melbourne/Hawthorn), Tom Mitchell (Sydney/Hawthorn/Collingwood) and Quinton Narkle (Geelong/Port Adelaide/Fremantle).
Some players were played out of position, due to the high number of midfielders. The side was arranged for team balance.
This is the AFL Team of Players who have played for or will play for 3 AFL Clubs for 2026:
B: Brad Hill (Haw/Frem/St K), Billy Frampton (PA/Adel/Coll), Joel Hamling (WB/Frem/Syd)
HB: Adam Saad (GC/Ess/Carl), Rory Lobb (GWS/Fremantle/WB), Corey Wagner (NM/Melb/Frem)
C: Blake Acres (St K/Frem/Carl), Adam Treloar (GWS/Coll/West B), Matt Kennedy (GWS/Carl/WB)
HF: Jack Martin (GC/Carl/Geel), Mabior Chol (Richmond/GC/Haw), Jake Stringer (WB/Ess/GWS)
F: Tyson Stengle (Rich/Ad/Geel), Jesse Hogan (Melb/Frem/GWS), Jack Gunston (Adel/Haw/Bris)
R: Brodie Grundy (Coll/Melb/Syd), Jaegar O’Meara (GC/Haw/Frem), Taylor Adams (GWS/Coll/Syd)
Interchange: Jack Steele (GWS/St K/Melb), Tim Membrey (Syd/St K/Coll), Will Setterfield (GWS/Carl/Ess), Will Brodie (GC/Frem/PA), Tom Campbell (WB/NM/St K)
Coach: David Parkin (Haw/Carl//Fitz)
This team will play a pretend exhibition match against the Team of Players who played for 3 VFL/AFL clubs in 3 years, named by Rodney in the Footy Almanac on February 27, 2023.
Venue: THREE Rivers Stadium, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, US
Entertainment: The song “THREE Times a Lady”, by Commodores and “Knock THREE Times”, by Tony Orlando and Dawn
Let’s hope for a good game of football that will be a triple treat!
