FEARLESS 2022: Round 5 reviewed and ‘playworpel’ introduced

Hi all, we’re taking advantage of school holidays to catch up on a plethora of things. However, a recent discovery by family members is the above game at playworpel.com where you have a few clues and 8 guesses to try and guess the AFL player of the day. One of the clues is actually a blackened silhouette of the player concerned, so if you have an eye to physical attributes and outlines then you may be at an advantage…

**Not to be confused with wordle in the New York Times daily, a puzzle concerning 5 letter words, which is also worth a shot on a daily basis.

Cheers PT

2022 FEARLESS Rd 5:

A quality game on Easter Thursday between BrisVegas and Collingwood saw the Lions run out winners by 7pts. Two late goals to Moore and De Goey probably minimized the margin somewhat, but McRae’s Magpies were never that far off the pace. De Goey kicked 4, as did Daniher, as both seem wanting to settle well into 2022. The Pies forward line more productive, even with Goggles Cox present. Crisp 36, Neale 33.

Not a Good Friday 1: North hosted the Bulldogs in a marquee game but just didn’t show up until qtr time. By that stage the Dogs were 8.3 to 1.0. so much for the effort last week by the Roos. The gulf between the two teams massive, despite the Roos upping the ante to trail only by 20pts at the 1 /2. 11.9 to 5.3 in the 2nd half saw the Dogs do whatever. Weightman, Naughton 5 each, Larkey 4, Bazlenka 43 stats. Dogs 68pts.

Not a Good Friday 2: The Swans were holding the Eagles scoreless until the 17min mark of the 2nd qtr when Flyin’ Ryan booted their 1st. Swans by 56 to 0, prior. The Swans by 63 and so the eagles were more competitive after the half time break. Mills and Gulden led the Swans stats, but it was more the way the Swans played that made the Eagles look average. West Coast needs some luck in season 2022 and now!

A mark of maturity for both StKilda and Gold Coast at Marvel on Saturday. The Saints managed to hold on after being challenged and the Suns stuck to the task. Anderson and Miller continually propelled the Suns forward and at times in the 1st half, the Suns looked capable of a boilover. The steadiness of Steele, Sinclair, Ross, and Crouch assisted the Saints, as did 5 goals by Snags Higgins, who’s found touch again.

Always a shame to see a legend of AFL succumb to an ACL in their final years. As it was for Crows captain Rory Sloane, the universally admired leader went down in the latter parts of the Crow inspired win over the Tigers. Tex continued his return with 5 for the Crows, ably helped by Himmelberg 4. Tigers continue their topsy-turvy year. Trent Cotchin’s errant leg nearly got him in trouble, but results in a loose change fine!

0.5 was not a great way for the Giants to start their MCG encounter against the Demons on Saturday Night. Whilst they made some amends in the 2 nd qtr, the Dees made them pay in the 3rd with 10.2 to 2.2. The best efforts of Tom Green and Cement Head Ward with 34 each, counted for 3/5 of bugger all against the reigning Premiers. A 67pt win for Melbourne to continue their unbeaten start to 2022. Beavis Fritsch 4.

The seasons of Carlton and Port couldn’t have differed more than their 2021 campaign thus far. At the 1 /2, the Blues led by 49pts and Port were on the road to a 0-5 start to 2022. A 6.4 3rd qtr by Port, led by 100- gamer Burton, Butters and Rozee would’ve been enough to give Ken Hinkley some hope that all was not lost. Charlie Curnow kicked 5, a terrific attack with Big H with 3. Blues withheld the Power surge by 3pts.

In recent history, Freo’s major challenges have been away games, forward line efficiency and lack of a key forward. Against the Bombers, all these factors disappeared in the 3rd qtr, after an even and entertaining first half. 6.3 to 0.5 and Freo made a statement in the 3rd. Matt Taberner kicked 7 and Freo kicked 16.11 to win by 8 goals. The Bombers tread water as the season progresses. Heppell and Brayshaw each 34 stats.

An Easter Monday treat for the footy world when most thought the Cats would win in a canter and the Hawks got home by 12pts. The Hawks had reason to be optimistic, leading by 23pts at the 1st change, with small forward Dylan Moore booting 3. However, the Cats came back in the 2nd and 3rd qtrs., establishing their cred. A 4.4 to 0.4 last qtr by the Hawks inspired by Mitchell and Newcombe leading the stat count.
