Crio’s Racing: Follow the Money

FOLLOW THE MONEY

The gun hoops lead you to wherever the main meeting is each week. Despite its reputation for shallow glitz and the “restricted” status of the races on the programme, the Gold Coast will be the focus of interest for owners, trainers and punters this Saturday.

“Magic Millions” is a hypnotic promise which lures dreamers and schemers for the sale and the big payday where graduates can deliver the pot of gold.

Being off-season everywhere else helps hog the limelight and it is the 2yr olds (R6) which figure most in speculations. Fascinating race. Inside draws and on pace tend to be favoured. 1 and 7 are the obvious selections. Oakleigh Girl blew up last time but will now be juicy odds from a handy gate.

The 3yo “Guineas” is 40 mins earlier and is also a really good race. Sweet Idea (10) is the rage but there’s lots of value elsewhere for exotics. Forgive the Bowler (9 @ 20/1) and consider Weinholt (5 @ 12/1).

As the big players follow the money north, I’ll be staying in Flemington trying to earn some. As usual, there is fantastic prizemoney on offer at a fairly lowkey meeting – Racing Victoria is the envy of much of the world with its capacity to consistently present 8 races of enticing prizes. Not so attractive, however, is the VRC’s insistence on a longer day, spreading the fields across a significantly longer timeframe than even the other city clubs manage to schedule – perhaps there’s an extra serving in the Chairman’s Club or time for port and coffee! – they’d do well to occasionally join the wastelands below where a hardy few wait out the interminable gaps. G.Boss has stayed in Melbourne so that might be a handy lead for those looking to supplement their dwindling holiday bank accounts. For Quaddy habitués, here are some early pointers:-

MR5- Rain Lover H’cp, 2500m $100,000 – 5,1,11

MR6- Chester Manifold Stakes, Listed, 1400m $120,000 – 8,4, maybe blowout 3

MR7- Comedy King H’cp, 1600m $80,000 – 5,6,1, even 3 is you can go wide

MR8- Tauto H’cp, 1200m $80,000 + 30k bonuses –  Moody holds the key but don’t exclude 1

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

Elsewhere around the country we have the usual eclectic mix. The bucketlist destination is probably Tumut ( I’m a sucker for a palindrome) at the foothills of the Snowy Mountains. The Cup’s worth $14,500 and the support card includes a Tumut Golf Club Chook Run Maiden Plate! A trainer told me this morning that they’ll get “3,000 odd” but that Boxing Day is the pick of the season. Check the link and be charmed – http://www.tumutraces.com.au/

No hope of me getting away to a Country Cup in January but I’d encourage anyone to have a look at the racing calendars and try to get out and enjoy what our racetracks can offer. And, if you are having a bet, good luck!
