Cam Hooke’s Collingwood Life: Round 6 review, Round 7 preview
G’day all, True Believers.
I’m not sure I’ve ever reported following four Losses in a row. I wasn’t reporting when we picked up the Wooden Spoon a few years back; when we picked Fraser as the First Pick in the Draft. It’s a new experience. I’m reminded of Buck’s comments a couple of years ago following the GF Loss to the WCE – “not sure how to counsel you“. So? Where do we go? As per last week, “hope”. And maybe watch the example set by some – Daicos, Pendles, Mihocek? And maybe be willing to try some changes?
Round 6
After three goals, I thought to myself “I’m going to enjoy this“, but I didn’t. Not a great performance. What was extraordinary was how long it took Essendon to cut loose.
Collingwood 13.7.85 were defeated by Essendon 16.13.109:
- Match Report – https://www.afl.com.au/matches/3044#match-report; and
- Buck’s comments – https://www.afl.com.au/video/602711/bucks-not-giving-up-on-2021?videoId=602711&modal=true&type=video&publishFrom=1619340732001&references=AFL_MATCH:3044. Note the heading: “We’re not giving up on 2021“.
Extraordinary things we saw:
- Nothing jumps out at me from our perspective with the exception of our start – Certainly, every time Parish touched the ball in the Midfield things happened and McDonald-Tipungwuti was simply incredible. Do you recall anything?
Some statistics and comments:
- Hit Outs – I’m ignoring this number as irrelevant (and as Bucks stated in a previous post-match interview, and if you need further justification, Burgess, rucking for the Suns in place of the injured Witts Lost Hit Outs 20 to Sydney’s 76; but the Suns Won the Clearances 44 / 41. More on them later.).
- Clearances – 38 (us) / 39 (them). Noteworthy is that we Lost the Centre bounce Clearances 13 / 16 but Won the Stoppage Clearances 25 / 21.
- Inside 50s – 43 / 54.
- Disposal Efficiency – 66.9% / 75.7%. A significant difference.
- Individual Disposal Efficiency – 6 / 12 players with a DE equal to or over 80% and 5 / 2 with an individual DE equal to or under 50%. Grundy and Sidebottom figure in this latter number.
- Disposal Efficiency Inside 50 – 46.5% / 53.7%. A difference that seemed to come to play late in the game. The commentators were huge in praising the Pies’ marking and scoring from the limited Inside 50s for much of the game.
- Contested possessions – 143 / 126. Okay, we won that. So, where was the breakdown? Look at the DE inside the 50. Welcome your thoughts?
- Tackles – 56 / 86. Remember Bucks identified this as a specific failing after Round 1. Now? As an indication of application, that’s very poor.
- Scoring Shots – 20 / 29. Not much of a difference, but didn’t they get the ball to a good goal-scoring position?
- Losing margin – 24 Points. That is another significant beating.
And another comment on the ‘new’ game. We Lost Uncontested Possessions 211 / 250 and Marks 81 / 114. Maybe the “keep-ens off” style of play, as demonstrated by these numbers, are indicative of what we need to be doing. Get possession and keep it. Various entries into the 50 without a good target in mind are a quick way of turning over possession.
Best: Crisp, Cameron, Pendles, Grundy, Quaynor and Daicos. I don’t agree with all of those but I don’t have any to add. Classic Pendles – Mr Smooth.
Lessons:
- Application. It certainly hasn’t reached an acceptable level yet.
- Back 6 – Not sure moving Moore forward was workable – if the ball is delivered badly into the Forward line, there’s not a lot that anyone can do about it. I think someone needs to ask Moore what he wants to do – and focus on that.
- Ball Handling. Our ball handling was awful particularly compared with Essendon’s.
- Forwards, ‘the breakdown’ was critical.
- Crumbing packs, both behind and in front? Critical too.
- Tackling and one-on-one. Too many opponents ran out of tackles and in one-on-one competitions our player was occasionally on the ground, leaving his opponent free to continue. Stay on your feet or get up quickly.
- Midfield success? We were destroyed?

Round 7
Collingwood Magpies versus Gold Coast Suns
May day. They’ll be celebration the Red colour all over Russia. Saturday, 1 May 2021 at the MCG; bounce at 1.45pm. Pretty soon, but they only had one more than us for recovery.
Them
The Gold Coast Suns come into our game after a great performance defeating Sydney by 40 Points. Their performance was typified by their aggression, their relentless pressure and their slick ball movement. I might add that each of these characteristics do not appear regularly on our game reports. Their key performers were their ‘high-end’ Draft picks. Okay, we have a few of these.
The Suns have Won two and Lost three, but they Lost to Carlton by 11 Points and to Adelaide by 10, each of which could have been reversed. The Suns lost Witts (remember him) injured during the Adelaide game leaving them to finish without a key Ruck. They are sitting 11th on the Ladder with a percentage of 98.1%, compared with our 17th place and 85.4%. The Suns should not be considered “Easy Beats”; they will take to us with all the enthusiasm of a collection of young hot-shots. See below, how to deal with them.
Based on their games this year, players to watch:
- Miller – Rover;
- King – FF. Highlighted last game his leading and marking (and fairly obviously his kicking scoring five majors);
- Lukosius – HB;
- Ellis – Wing;
- Bowes – BP; and
- Anderson – off the interchange bench;
Also watch for Rankine – an extraordinary talent. Not a lot else to say other than their game characteristics listed above should scare us.
Us:
I discovered something on the weekend – when I got bored with Geelong’s destruction of the WCE I discovered the Collingwood / Essendon VFL game shown live on Kayo. Actually, that was a bit disappointing too but there were glimpses of competence.
Team & Tasks. I think we still need changes (and some back in):
Ins:
- Lynch – Ruck, alternating with Grundy (FF) setting up a much taller Forward line;
- De Goey – available; and
- Keane – now available;
Outs:
- Hoskin-Elliott;
- Thomas; and
- Sidebottom – check the Disposals and Disposal Efficiency for the las few games. He needs a rest. Your thoughts?
Game Plan. We need to focus on:
- Application. High intensity commitment for four Quarters. Watch the Contested Possession and Tackle numbers. The chase and tackle must be maintained for four Quarters, and when we tackle, we have to hold on;
- A different approach. As suggested above, replace Grundy with Lynch as the principal ruck; move Grundy forward into the FF role supported by Cameron and Mihocek and De Goey and the other smalls;
- Winning the Clearances. Dominating Inside 50s, would actually be a better target statement here – working backwards, Inside 50s rely on Clearances and the drive forward; Clearances rely on Hit Outs and action in the Midfield. A failure at any stage will result in a failure of the system. And you can add Disposal Efficiency into this process. Scoring is a direct consequence of getting the ball into the 50; and accurate kicking – look for a better placed kicker;
- Moore back into the Back 6 with freedom for intercept marking;
- Note the likely aggression and pressure from the Suns. Accept this, be prepared to pass wide or back and be patient. We can Win this if we get in control and keep control; and
- Please don’t put Madgen on the Wing again.
Conclusion. We can Win this comprehensively. In the next month or so we have games against North, Sydney in Sydney and Port Adelaide before the game against Geelong on the weekend 29/30 May. We have much to do to get things right.
My picks. Collingwood to Win by 27 Points. BOG – Pendles – 31 Disposals @ 87.3% DE; 11 Clearances and three Tackles; Grundy gets three goals; Cameron and Mihocek each get one. Your thoughts?
Experts. Go to http://whotippedwhat.com/round/afl-2021-round-7/. This could be interesting too. Check it out later in the week.
Weather. Cloudy but dry – moulded sole boots.
- TV. There’s a pile of games overlapping, so unlikely to have FTA Go to a club or pub to watch. Routine for FOXTEL and Kayo.

From memory Buckley’s Magpies lost 6 matches in a row in 2015, after a promising start. A Tony Shaw like performance. Sorry to sound like Jackson Browne’s crow, but the worst is yet to come, with matches against Richmond, Moggies, Port, Hawthorn and Melbourne yet to happen. It’s going to be a long winter, but from this merde of a season may come a brighter future…
