Cam Hooke’s Collingwood Life: Round 21 Review / Round 22 Preview
Greetings, True Believers.
Okay. Occasionally we will Lose. I don’t like it any more than you do, but we Pies’ supporters pride ourselves on our support for the team, especially when they lose, not only when they Win, and we have a long history of doing just that. So? Don’t leave the game early, please. Even if you are critical of some players (as we are quite entitled to be) there are others on the field doing their best for the team. So, maintain your support. It is important.
I didn’t like our performance last night at all. More on that below. I hope my criticisms are seen as well founded, positive and useful.
Do not lose hope. We had a two-game margin, plus percentage, clear at the top of the table previously. Following Port’s Loss to Geelong last night that is still the margin. And Geelong kicked Carlton out of the Eight; well, at least until their game against St Kilda today (now underway). What’s your opinion?
Go Pies.

Numbers:
Measure | Statistics | Remarks |
Disposals | 313 / 410 | I don’t usually rate this number. What it shows, with a reasonably similar Contested Possessions statistic between the teams, is that Hawthorn played ‘keep’ens off’ football when they could, which was for most of the game – they dictated how the game would be played. |
Hit Outs | 36 / 49 | Becoming a critical issue. Cox is a better ruck than Cameron. Perhaps need to try others? |
Clearances | 35 / 34 | This statistic is a surprise, though the next, below, is not. Watching, it seemed Hawthorn drove unimpeded out of the Centre. Our Midfield seemed slaughtered. Late manning changes in the Midfield should have been tried earlier – Adams to swap with De Goey; N.Daicos moved away – Backline or Forward pocket? |
from Centre | 3 / 18 | Not a surprise. |
from Stoppages | 32 / 16 | A huge surprise. I might add that they crumbed far better than us around packs, scoring a number of times. |
Inside 50s | 43 / 59 | Matches my observation on the TV – they got the ball into the 50 far more frequently than us. |
Goals scored | 11 / 16 | Follows on. |
Scoring Shots | 18 / 25 | We wasted some shots. That said, 11.7 is fairly good kicking. 16.9 is even better. |
Disposal Efficiency | 76.0% / 78.8% | I thought Hawthorn’s DE would be much higher. I felt that they didn’t drop a mark or pass it incorrectly for much of the game whereas we routinely passed the ball directly to an opponent. There were some very silly decisions made by our players at times – players need to identify the sense of calling for the ball sometimes. And talk more? |
DE Inside 50 | 46.5% / 49.2% | Okay – they got the ball inside the 50 much more frequently than us, and they used it better. Of course they were on their way to winning. |
Marks | 76 / 139 | Relates to the whole Disposal control statistic – ‘keep’ens off’. |
Marks Inside 50 | 9 / 16 | Significant in support of DE inside 50s to our detriment. |
Tackles | 65 / 56 | |
Tackles Inside 50 | 8 / 11 | Significant in support of DE inside 50s to our detriment, also. |
Players with DE > 80 % | 11 / 11 | This surprised me, as above, re DE. |
Tackles | 65 / 56 | Combined, this would indicate the pressure was very similar by both teams. This was not the view I had watching. There were way too many attempted breaking of tackles and too little 2ndefforts – getting up and following up. And our tackles were not good enough.
Hawthorn decided and defined the way the game would be played and we followed their direction. |
Contested Possessions | 112 / 116 | |
1 %’ers | 36 / 44 | |
Uncontested Possessions | 198 / 285 | Relates to the whole Disposal control statistic – ‘keep’ens off’. |
Free Kicks | 14 / 16 | Whatever. I loved the ‘double goal’ opportunity awarded. |
Best: The AFL website identifies our Best as Crisp, Pendles and Elliott. Don’t disagree. Murphy and Quaynor worked hard, as did Mihocek, and Sidebottom frequently turned up.
Comparisons: A comparison and Pendles and a couple of others:
- N.Daicos – 5 Disposals @ 80.0% Disposal Effectiveness, 3 Tackles, 1 Clearance, 1 Intercept Possession with 77 metres Gained and 1 goal; and
- Maginness – 6 D @ 100.0% DE, 2 T, 0 Cl with 55 mG. In a comparison of the two, you would have to credit Maginness as more effective.
- Sicily – 37 D @ 89.2% DE, 3 Inside 50, 1 T, 19 Marks, 11 IP, 3 Goal Assists with 515 mG. Sicily ‘managed’ his team. He was everywhere; simply outstanding. Look at my caution from last week – my suggestion: tag him.
- Ryan – 9D, 5 M, 3 goals. This was Ryan’s 2nd game. Look at my caution from last week.
- Pendles – 23 D @ 69.6% DE, 4 M, 7 T, 6 Cl with 439 mG and 1 goal. A pretty solid day at the Office?
Game / Deductions / Lessons. From a Pies’ supporter’s perspective this was not enjoyable. Hawthorn put on a display that demonstrated how to play the game, indeed how to Win the game. The opening Quarter set a scene that was always a challenge. That said, after their first goal in Q2, our next four unanswered goals led us, mortals, to think that they would do just that. Not to be. Hawthorn challenged the individual team players’ application and skills. They looked and identified where they would pass the ball and did so accurately unlike much of ours. They slowed the game down when they needed to with simple short passes and marks. They controlled the game.
A couple of specific comments in addition to those included in the Table, above:
- We need to work on passing the ball within the 50 to get the ball to better-placed players. We should focus on Goal Assist (GA) statistics in preference to Goals scored;
- We again kicked high ‘up and under’s towards to goal square rather than targeting leading forwards. This resulted in few pack marks and our crumbing around the packs was not as good as theirs in their attack;
- Kick-in’s were too slow and were frequently intercepted. We badly need to fix this. There needs to be a very clear plan on how to execute this;
- Midfield control is essential to add to our drive from the Backline, not just out of the Centre. Our Midfield did not dominate;
- Our 2nd effort needs to be emphasised. There were some cases of individuals who had missed tackles not pursuing; and
- We can do better.
Your views?
Injuries. Serious injuries to N.Daicos and Murphy – out for some weeks. Advice on Mitchell not yet available.

Round 22
Friday, 11th August – Collingwood versus Geelong at the MCG; bounce at 7.50pm.
This game is between 1st (still, us with 16 Wins and 4 Losses) on 128.0% percentage and 8th (them with 10 Wins, 9 Losses and one Draw) on 119.2% (their place on the Ladder may change this afternoon with the Carlton / St Kilda game – St Kilda are currently up 2 goals to 1 Behind – early days). Current betting: $1.68 / $2.20. Due to our Ladder position we are favourites; not quite sure we should be.
Them
Geelong are the current Premiers but in broad terms have had a pretty ordinary season. Maybe they are coming good at the right time, but I’m not sure. They Lost their first three games resulting in the odious result of the reigning Premier sitting 18th on the Ladder, at the end of Round 3. But things have improved. By Round 8 they’d Won five in a row reaching 6th place on the Ladder. A series of Wins and Losses since their Round 13 Bye (including a notable Draw with Sydney in Sydney in Round 16) saw them advance to 5th position after Round 18. They currently sit 8thwithout Round 21 being completed. There are currently (without Round 21 being completed) sitting on the Ladder with between 40 and 44 points. Of these Geelong, Carlton, Sydney and Adelaide all have competitive percentages. What happens over the next three Rounds is anyone’s guess.
Geelong come to this game after their Win over Port Adelaide at Kardinia Park in Geelong yesterday. This followed Losses to Freo, also at Kardinia Park and Brisbane at the Gabba. As we are very much aware, their Win over Port is not to be taken lightly.
Geelong have made much of Hawkins and Cameron as forward targets augmented by some ‘smalls’ from the pockets. Their Midfield has been firmly directed by Dangerfield supported by Blicavs. Stewart sits strongly in the CHB position controlling the Backline.
Geelong are on the improve.
Players to Watch?
- Cameron – CHF / FF;
- Dangerfield – Rover / Centre (on one occasion started at BP);
- Holmes – Wing;
- Stewart – CHB / HB / BP;
- Duncan – Wing / HF;
- Miers – FP / HF;
- Hawkins – CHF / FF; and
- Blicavs – Centre / Rover / CHB.
Also keep an eye on Henry because of the Collingwood family connection.
Roles?
- Close attention to Cameron and / or Hawkins?
- Note the emphasis of their Best (Players to Watch, above) on the corridor. Note the need to Win the key points – CHB / CHF / Midfield.
- Need to compete for game control through CP / tackles / 1%’ers?
Geelong supporters. Amongst our list of addressees, above, are three Geelong supporters. I would welcome your comments, gentlemen?
Us:
Geelong should not be taken lightly. A few suggested changes for us:
- Team? Suggest a continuing review including a few changes:
- Krueger replaces Lipinski;
- McInnes replaces Mitchell;
- Ginnivan replaces N.Daicos;
- Cox replaces Cameron (managed);
- Kelly replaces Murphy; and
- Markov continues as Sub.
Your choices / ideas?
- Application? No change – Application for four full Quarters. Hold the tackles. Establish and maintain control of the game (Contested Possessions).
- Game Plan? No change to the current plan – Drive out of the Backline as well as the Midfield. Use varied entry to the 50 and be willing to move the ball to a better-placed goal scorer than delivering to packs. Crumb around packs. Importantly, I’d like to see the kick-in progress more smoothly out of the Backline – I think speed, planning and preparedness have a lot to do in achieving this.
My Picks:
Win by 23 Points. BOG – De Goey – 29 Disposals, 8 Clearances, 5 Tackles and 487 mG. Mihocek and Ginnivan both get 5; Elliott records 5 GA.
Ground Reports. Okay, we are going to this one. Loved the Reports from attendees. Let’s see some reporting, please, from those who couldn’t attend but watched the game on TV – all views are welcome. Do we have any others going? Could you report please? And always Reply to All please?
Weather. Very light rain is forecast on the game day and on the days leading to it. Get rid of the plastic-soled boots and get the ones with stops.
TV: Kayo or FOXTEL – Best for every game. I prefer the commentators.
Free to Air TV coverage on 7mate from 7.30pm.
Future:
- Round 23 – Friday, 18 August – Collingwood versus Brisbane at Marvel; bounce at 7.50pm. FTA coverage on 7mate. Anyone going?
- Round 24 – Date / time TBA – Essendon versus Collingwood at the MCG. Likely FTA coverage. Our last H&A game – worth going before the Finals kick in?
- The Ladder. Keep an eye on the Ladder as we approach the Finals. Have a look at recent results and moves. As above who could have expected a Season to finish like this one? Your thoughts?
Other:
- VFL – The VFL side Lost to Werribee a few minutes ago. Their game was generally even after a 0 / 5 goal Q1 deficit. Their Round 21 game on Saturday, 12 August is against Geelong at Victoria Park; bounce at 11.35. They are currently sitting 10th on the Ladder. The top 10 teams go on to the Finals. Anyone going?
- Anything that you would like to inform our members of, just to all or send it to me.
Believe always. Go Pies.

right now collingwood needs all the help it can get, so i call on the spirit of the Rybuck Shearer:

My shears and stone in the river I’ll throw
And I’ll never open Sawbees or take another blow
And prove I’m a ryebuck shearer
