Cam Hooke’s Collingwood Life: Round 2 Review, Round 3 Preview

G’day True Believers.

Now, the season outcomes, so far, have been better than the alternatives but two wins do not make a season. It’s been fun to watch, to be a Pies’ supporter.

AFLW: Firstly, ladies, a great effort. Believe our support and best wishes for the future. Now, for next year, potentially starting in August of this year. Maybe?

Round 2

Collingwood 15.10.100 defeated Adelaide 8.10.58

The positives first. Two things; I loved the application, again, for the whole game – contested possessions plus tackles – 200 (us)/189 (them). Well done, all. My second positive was the look on the players’ faces. They were having fun, enjoying their footy, and not afraid to show it. Well done, everyone, especially the coaches.

Match Report: www.afl.com.au/matches/3821#match-report

The game, goals scored by quarter:

Q1 5 (us)/1 (them)

Q2 2/2

Q3 7/4

Q4 1/1

Total 15 / 8.

Some keys:

Grundy v O’Brien? Not sure who to give this to. HO – 29 (Grundy)/28 (O’Brien; D – 15/14 T – 2/4 Cl – 2/4 MG – 103/48 G – 1/0 GA – 1/0 and DEf – 80.0%/85.7%. Who do you think won?
Anyone v Rachele? Well, he got five the week before, plus one at the 10 minute mark of the first this week. Then was quiet. Well done, backs.
Collingwood had 12 goalkickers. Of these five were new this year.

Statistics & Lessons:

Team statistics (identifying only those numbers where there was a significant difference):

Hit Outs: 30 (us, nearly all Grundy)/33 (them). I expect more from an All Australian ruck?

Clearances: 29/36. The next step. This number largely reflects the above HO

Centre: 11/12. Ok, this shows a close approximation at the centre bounces. Not great, but reasonably expected with midfields of similar quality. Is that the case? I see our midfield as a major strength.

Stoppages: 18/24. We were seriously ‘sharked’ at the stoppages. Cannot continue. Something to be examined.

Inside 50s: 54/51. Interesting given the clearance numbers.

Scoring Shots: 25/18. And so the game was won.

Disposal Efficiency: my continuing ‘bete noire’. Some players have huge numbers of possessions (and frequently get on the best lists as a consequence), but when you have a look, frequently quite limited effective (read: useful) deliveries. Multiply the DE with the Disposal numbers and compare your players’ contributions – eye opening. Look at individual Player Stats at www.afl.com.au/matches/3821#player-stats under ADVANCED/DEf. I proposed in previous years an arbitrary figure of 80% efficient. Harder for midfield players than backs or forwards (usually, but not always). Your thoughts?

Best: Listed bests were: Crisp, Pendles, De Goey, Josh D and McCreery. Again, I would add be inclined to add a couple: Howe and Ginnivan as well. Again, check the ‘metres gained’ by the individual players at www.afl.com.au/matches/3821#player-stats under BASIC, MG. Eye opening? And Lipinski only just misses out. I would have included him if he’d had 400m MG; he had 396m.

I still haven’t heard from any of our members who managed to get to a game. I would love some ‘ground reporting’ please?

Well played guys; a great and truly deserved result.

Round 3

Collingwood v Geelong

Saturday, March 26 2022 at the MCG; bounce at 1:45pm.

Previous: Collingwood and Geelong have met on three occasions in the last couple of years with their and our best still at the clubs are identified (seeing the repeats?)

May 29, 2021: Win to Geelong by 10 points. A goalless first half by us, and, allegedly, a bunch of ‘junk time’ goals in the last made things look better.

Geelong – Hawkins, Parfitt, Selwood, Tuohy, Stewart and Narkle
Us – Moore, Quaynor, Crisp, Bianco. A lot of names missing?

October 10, 2020: Destruction of us by Geelong by 68 points in a Semi-Final showing we shouldn’t have been there.

Geelong – Dangerfield, Duncan, Stewart, C. Guthrie, Menegola and Henderson
Us – Adams, Crisp and Quaynor

July 16, 2020: Win to us by 22 points. Selwood went off injured very early in the first, having a significant effect

Geelong – Dangerfield, C. Guthrie, Menegola and Tuohy
Us – De Goey, Moore, Pendles, Maynard and Adams.

Geelong

Community Series: Geelong lost to the Suns by 23 points (at the GC). Their Best were C. Guthrie, Atkins, Cameron, De Koning and Selwood.

Round 1: Geelong slaughtered Essendon (to everyone’s surprise because we all thought Essendon was the likely up and comer this season). They won by 66 points. Fundamentally, Geelong dominated the first half and scored 12 goals to three; the second half was closer, each team scored eight goals. Their best were Dangerfield, Stengle, Hawkins, Parfitt, C. Guthrie and Selwood.

Round 2: Sydney soundly defeated Geelong by 30 points. Statistically, when you look at the team statistics Geelong had an advantage in Hit Outs, Clearances and Inside 50s and, worst of all, their Disposal Efficiency was 6.7% below Sydney’s throughout the game and 8.0% below Sydney’s within the 50. Geelong lost the game through Sydney’s dominance in Q1 and half of Q2. Their best on this occasion – Close, Selwood, Stewart and Smith.

Injuries: Go to www.geelongcats.com.au/news/1083623/injury-update-round-2. Not up to date. Try later.

Deductions?

Geelong are beatable.
Geelong have huge reliance on Selwood and Dangerfield from the centre. Tag Selwood.
Geelong have an outstanding collection of talls in their forward line. The best solution to defeating these are ensuring the ball doesn’t go near them – avoid the one on one competitions.

Who to watch? Lots to watch, but culling the list:

Selwood – Everywhere in the midfield (interestingly, coming on from the Interchange bench)
Dangerfield – Ruck Rover
Stengle – CHF
Hawkins – Forward
Cameron – Forward (if playing)
Ratagolea – Forward
Z. Guthrie – Back

Us

Injuries: No more have been listed. Cox and Kreuger should be available. Roughead still out for a few more weeks, then maybe back through the VFL.

Team: Hard to change a winning team. But Maynard is available and should come back. Cox didn’t perform as anticipated in Round 1 but can be a useful target for the ‘up and under’ kicks into the 50 (please not every entry, but one of the entry alternatives). He is also a better second ruck than Cameron and I think we need to be able to give Grundy a rest, occasionally. Selwood is (always has been in my view (when on the field)) the most dangerous Geelong player. He needs to be tagged. Need speed and strength – Sier?

I have little to add to the side’s performance last week, except for this week:

Address the Clearances at stoppages around the ground
Continue to enjoy your footy
Close defence on Ratagolea
Tag Selwood. Sier?
And a special mention to my Geelong-supporting siblings and John Harms. Your thoughts would be welcomed.

Result: Collingwood to win by 17 points. BOG – De Goey with 41 disposals, 11 clearances, four tackles and two goals. Elliott to get five goals. Your thoughts? Go get ’em, boys.

TV: Go to www.afl.com.au/broadcast-guide-premiership. This seems to indicate free to air coverage on 7mate from 7.00pm.

Weather: Cloudy and sunny. Moulded-sole boots okay.

Round 4

Saturday, April 9, 2022 at Marvel; bounce at 4:35pm

Collingwood v West Coast

Other

History Watch: It’s hard to keep good men down. Firstly it was all quiet, then Eddie bounced in – https://www.msn.com/en-au/sport/other/eddie-urges-afl-to-abolish-useless-tribunal/ar-AAVoU4w?ocid=msedgdhp – completely redo the tribunal. And then? Bucks is part of the commentary team for Fox Footy, along with Eddie Betts also starting this year.
