Cam Hooke’s Collingwood Life: Round 15 – Review / Round 16 – Preview

Greetings to all.

Another nail-biter; another Win. With a nearly six-goal advantage late in Q3, what could go wrong? Apparently, lots.

Onward and upward. Go Pies.

Round 15

Collingwood 11.22.88 defeated GWS 12.5.77

Close? Only at the end.

A comments first:

  • The Ladder is interesting and going to become more so. My suggestions? Watch Richmond and the WB going up and Sydney and Brisbane going down. And us? We have the very real potential to keep heading up. My call? Into the Top 4 when we beat Carlton in Round 23.

Go Pies.

Game Timeline. Have a look at the Timeline awww.afl.com.au/afl/matches/3934#timeline. It shows the significance of their start and their finish. The game, Goals scored by Quarter:

  • Q1                   3 (us) / 2 (them).
  • Q2                   2 / 0;
  • Q3                   4 / 3;
  • Q4                   2 / 7; and
  • Total               11 / 12. So, they Won the goal count. But we Won the game.  Note the Scoring Shot differential – 33 (Us) / 17 (Them).

Statistics & Lessons:

Hit Outs                                 47 / 12

Clearances                           37 / 28            Centre: 13 / 10; Stoppage: 24 / 18.

Inside 50s                              62 / 50

Disposal Efficiency              69.3% / 72.5%

Goals scored                         11 / 12

Disposal Efficiency I50        51.6% / 38.0%

Marks I50                               11 / 10

Tackles I50                            12 / 3

1%’rs                                      43 / 44

Deductions? Two good / one not so good:

  • Our HO dominance was not converted into Clearance or Inside 50 dominance. Okay, we won both those competitions; we should have won by a much greater amount. You have to give their Midfield the Win over ours.

  • Our DE throughout the game was a Loss to us; except when it mattered. We had many more Inside 50s than them and used the Inside 50 numbers far more effectively than them; augmented by the Tackles there. This Won us the game.

  • We Won the game by just under two straight kicks. Simple – that means they could have Won with two straight kicks.

Application. The sum of Contested Possessions and Tackles, as a measure of application, gives us both– 186  (us) / 180 (them); not hugely different. But for periods, the sides were each dominant – them in the first half of Q1 and the last half of Q4.

So, what is going on? We’ve established solid leads against both Hawthorn and, now, GWS which we have given up. Getting back to control of the game, we need to be able to stop a runaway period and control the game for four Quarters.

Best. Listed Best were: Cameron, Adams, Lipinski, Sidebottom, Maynard and Noble. Not going to argue too much about those. Another pretty good ‘team effort’. Well done. I never thought I’d say this: I think Cox performs better in the Ruck; Cameron better as a Forward target.

Ground Reporting. Now, did anyone go? Ground Reports please? Or I’d love to hear from those of us who simply watched it on TV;  please?

Round 16

Saturday, 2 July 2022; bounce at 7.25pm

Gold Coast versus Collingwood

Metricon Stadium

At one stage the GC were being touted as potential Finalist. Not sure that will (or could) happen now. They are currently placed 11th on the Ladder with 7 Wins and 7 Losses and a percentage of 110.5% compared with our 7th place, 9 Wins and 5 Losses and percentage of 106.0%. However they are the favourites to Win this game – $1.83 versus $2.01. Go figure?

They’ve had a pretty ordinary season. They’ve Won against Carlton, Sydney (in Sydney), Freo and Hawthorn (admittedly in Darwin). And they Lost to us by 25 Points in Round 7 on May Day. Their Best regularly includes many of their Midfield and selections from their HA and HF Lines. I haven’t watched them sufficiently to make comment on their game style. Your view?

Injuries. They’ve got a few out injured. Go to www.goldcoastfc.com.au/news/injury-update. Check later in the week.

Who to watch?

  • Witts – Ruck; current Club B & F; well known to those of us with a memory that extends back a few years;
  • Ainsworth – HF;
  • Miller – Rover;
  • Swallow – Wing;
  • Rankine – FP;
  • Anderson – Centre;
  • Casboult – CHF; and
  • Rowell – RR.

Us

Of course, it’s always with reluctance that you change a winning side, unless you’ve got a bunch of kids battering down the door to have an opportunity. Who to think about?

Injuries: No changes of note that we don’t already know about, apart from De Goey’s ongoing absence. And there are quite a few needing a run in the VFL competition before being a serious competitor for an AFL spot.

Team: Very hard to change a winning team after a number of Wins. No change?

Things to do – mostly the same as previous weeks:

Last week I added the following; it’s still valid: As referred to above, in spite of some great improvements over last year there is still work to be done. Our team ranks 4th in the competition for Pressure and 4th in Time spent in our Forward Half. The surprise to me is that we don’t rank higher in the Pressure. This is a fantastic acknowledgement of the players’ efforts. Well done. However we rank 15th amongst the competition in Scoring from Inside 50s. We know that is not good enough. We are wasting effort.

Other things to do:

  • Focus on the ruck battle – very important for the next step – Clearances, then the Inside 50s;
  • Seek to dominate the Clearances in both the Centre bounces and at stoppages around the ground;
  • Better establish Forward targets – a variety is essential. Please do not take Moore out of the Back 6;Maintain the speed of movement; avoid stoppages or delays (particularly amongst the Backline) – open the game up;
  • Continue to enjoy your footy; and
  • Pursue the execution of the high-intensity Game Plan for the entire four Quarters.

Anything else, people? Your views? Your thoughts would be welcomed.

Result

  • My Result. Collingwood to Win by 19 Points. BOG – De Goey with 29 Disposals, 8 Clearances, 4 Tackles and 1 Goal; Ginnivan, Mihocek and Harry each get 4. Your thoughts?

Go get em, boys.

TV? FTA TV coverage on 7mate from 7.00pm.

Weather? Rain is forecast from Friday over the weekend. Get rid of the moulded-sole boots.

Round 17
