Cam Hooke’s Collingwood Life: Round 12 Review / Round 13 Preview

Greetings to everyone.

This game was really important. Hawthorn are much better that their Ladder position would seem to indicate. I’m not sure of the maths, but I would not be surprised to see them in the Eight by the end of the Season. Then? And they showed both capability and commitment. But then, so did we. Feeling pretty confident at HT? How were you feeling at ¾ Time? And, as I said last week, I can do without a repeat of the last two minutes of the game each week.

Onward and upward. Next game – The Premiers, Melbourne. See below.  Go Pies.

Round 12

Collingwood 10.12.72 defeated Hawthorn 10.8.68. Close. Sure was.

Game Timeline. Have a look at the Timeline at www.afl.com.au/afl/matches/3909#timelineIt shows the significance of our early work in Q1 and Q2 and Hawthorn’s reply in Q2 and Q3 and the extended period of defence for the rest of the game. The game, Goals scored by Quarter:

  • Q1                   5 (us) / 2 (them).
  • Q2                   2 / 2;
  • Q3                   1 / 4;
  • Q4                   2 / 2; and
  • Total               10 / 10. And we Won.  Note the Scoring Shot differential – 22 (Us) / 18 (Them).

Statistics & Lessons:

I’ve finally discovered how to track statistics during the game, identifying the numbers by Quarter. These are all entered on the AFL website progressively. Unfortunately you need to be sitting at your computer to record the progressive numbers. Whatever, on this occasion I have recorded the progressive numbers of some categories (This is not going to happen regularly, trust me):

Statistic category Q1 HT Q3 FT Comments
Hit Outs 4(us)/8(them) 12/17 24/27 36/35
Clearances 8/7 18/13 28/24 34/37 Our failure to exploit our early dominance in Clearances and Inside 50s is evident in these numbers to the point where Hawthorn achieved greater numbers in the 2nd Half.
Inside 50s 17/8 33/19 44/30 65/40
Goals scored 5/2 7/4 8/8 10/10
Disposal effectiveness 64.8/64.8% 66.0/72.7% 67.4/69.3% 66.5/68.4% Apart from Q1, consistently less effective than Hawthorn.
Inside 50 – DE 52.9/62.5% 51.5/52.6% 38.8/48.4% 38.5/50.0% The 2nd Half Hawthorn advantage of 10% is significant. This needs to be addressed. This nearly led to our defeat.

1%’ers 17/7 36/24 49/52 76/77 A measure of application, particularly the defence.
Frees 7/2 11/5 18/13 26/20 Always the location and timing and the failure to award some Frees.

Application. The sum of Contested Possessions and Tackles, as a measure of application, gives – 233  (us) / 221 (them); not hugely different. But for periods, the sides were each dominant.

So, what is going on? We established a 30 Point lead mid Q2. Then Hawthorn scored five Goals in a row, taking the lead from us. Our recovery was great, but we need to do better to prevent the runaway scoring. The question the previous weeks remains “How well can we play in the dry against a quality opponent?”. Well, we found out.

Best. Listed Best were: N. Daicos, Lipinski, Cameron, Crisp, Adams and Sidebottom. Again, it was a magnificent ‘team effort’ but I would consider adding De Goey, Noble and Maynard. It is worth noting the Backs (Moore, Howe, Murphy, Quaynor and Maynard) achieved 39 Intercepts and approximately 1,000 metres gained. Adding Noble takes the Intercepts to 44 and the MG to nearly 1,500m. Well done.

Other. What is going on? Go to www.afl.com.au/news/775864/match-review-fines-galore-for-melee-ginnivan-charged-with-misconduct. “Misconduct”? I suggest Ginnivan needs to be protected by the Umpires. They are doing an appalling job letting opponents trying to rip his head off.

Ground Reporting. Now, did anyone go? Ground Reports please? Or I’d love to hear from those of us who simply watched it on TV;  please?

Round 13

Collingwood versus Melbourne.

Queen’s Birthday Holiday

Monday, 13 June 2022 at the MCG; bounce at 3.20pm.

Melbourne sit at the top of the Ladder but have had a couple of setbacks in the last couple of weeks. Okay, their 10 / 2 Win / Loss numbers and 141.2% percentage dwarfs our 8th place with 7 / 5 and 103.1% percentage. The current betting – $1.31 / $3.50 pretty fairly reflects the difference. But I’ve just got a feeling that we can, again, beat the odds. Remember, before Melbourne’s Round 11 and 12 defeats, their last Loss was to Collingwood last year – Buck’s last game as Coach.

So, Melbourne’s season, so far:

Round 1 – Win over WB by 26 Points;

Round 2 – Win over GC by 13;

Round 3 – Win over Essendon by 29;

Round 4 – Win over Port by 32;

Round 5 – Win over GWS by 67;

Round 6 – Win over Richmond by 22;

Round 7 – Win over Hawthorn by 10;

Round 8 – Win over St Kilda by 38;

Round 9 – Win over WCE by 74;

Round 10 – Win over North by 47;

Round 11 – Loss to Freo by 38; and

Round 12 – Loss to Sydney by 12.

So, an interesting season, so far. While the sequence of Wins is impressive, the performance by Melbourne is neither consistent nor comprehensive – the games against the GC and Hawthorn were close-run events. They are beatable. They are coming to the game following two embarrassing Losses. I always expect some kick-back in response to that but am not sure.

The Best from each game (plus the Coaches’ reporting of each game – several from Melbourne) gives me the Deductions and the list of players to watch.

Injuries: Go to  www.melbournefc.com.au/video/1139701/rd-12-injury-update?videoId=1139701&modal=true&type=video&publishFrom=1653888086001. Check later in week.

Deductions?

I upset people regularly. I think Melbourne plays boring football. They, of course, have the talent to Win games anyway. We need to play dynamically, with chaotic abandon, enjoying themselves (and ourselves). And the list below gives very strong evidence of their reliance on their Midfield.

It’s worthwhile noting that Oliver, Petracca and Gawn are all at the top of the Leaderboard of Coach reporting. What does that mean? Does it mean the team relies hugely on those individuals to the exclusion of other players?

Who to watch?

  • Petracca – Ruck Rover. Tagging task – Pendles / Kelly?
  • Oliver – Centre;
  • Gawn – Ruck;
  • Langdon – Wing;
  • Brayshaw – HB; and
  • Viney – Rover.

Anything else, people? Your views?

Us

Injuries:

  • Out? McInnes injured. There was also some talk that N. Daicos was off the field at the end of the game because he was injured. Nothing seen on this.
  • In? Kelly? Good option for the tagging role?

Team: Very hard to change a winning team after a couple of Wins. Change only for McInnes.

Things to do – same as previous weeks:

  • Focus on the ruck battle – very important for the next step – Clearances, then the Inside 50s;
  • Seek to shark the Clearances in the Centre bounces and at stoppages around the ground;
  • Better establish Forward targets – a variety is essential. Please do not take Moore out of the Back 6;
  • Maintain the speed of movement; avoid stoppages or delays (particularly amongst the Backline) – open the game up;
  • Continue to enjoy your footy; and
  • Pursue the execution of the high-intensity Game Plan for the entire four Quarters.

Your thoughts would be welcomed.

Result

  • My Result. Collingwood to Win by 17 Points. BOG – Pendles with 24 Disposals, 8 Clearances and 3 Tackles; and Petracca held to 14 Disposals; Ginnivan and Henry each get 5. Your thoughts?

Go get em, boys.

  1. FTA coverage. Don’t let that stop you from heading to the pub to watch.

Weather. Rain is not forecast, unlike the week leading up to it, when it is. Likely to be very slippery. Get out the boots with stops.

Round 14

Bye. Looking forward to that.
