Cam Hooke’s Collingwood Life: Round 10 Review/Round 11 Preview: Go Pies!

G’day to everyone. I hope you were able to watch the game or, at the least, listen to it. Worthwhile watching a replay; even the commentators agree. I enjoyed that.

Onward and upward. Next game – the olde enemy. See below.  Go Pies.

Round 10

Collingwood 12.14.86 defeated Fremantle 6.8.44.

A couple of comments first, particularly when faced with our performance the week prior:

How do you play in the wet? I can remember playing in these conditions when I was a boy – you finished the game coated with mud, wet all the way through but grinning like a Cheshire Cat. And you got to ride home sitting on a bunch of towels to keep the mess off the car seats. The ‘tricks’? 1. Keep the ball moving forward, regardless of the means. 2. And keep the pressure on – it takes longer to pick up a wet ball, allowing time to effect a tackle or spoil, particularly crumbing around packs.

I hadn’t realised it until Bucks highlighted it on Kayo/FOXTEL Footy, but when necessary the Wings were pushing well back freeing up Moore and Howe to exercise their roving, intercept missions. The title, “Defence in Depth” is well understood by our military / ex-military members. It was hugely successful. Good tactic, coaches.

We were magnificent playing the conditions. Well done.

Remember last week (and many other occasions) I asked the question “Who controlled the game?” Clearly, we did for all but a few occasions. Most of their majors came against the run of play. This a reversal of my comment last week. Is this correct? How can we maintain it?

Go Pies.

Game Timeline. Have a look at the Timeline at www.afl.com.au/afl/matches/3891#timeline. It shows the significance, particularly in the low-scoring wet conditions, of the 3-goal burst early in Q2 and the run home start in Q4.  The game, Goals scored by Quarter:

  • Q1                   2 (us) / 2 (them).
  • Q2                   3 / 0;
  • Q3                   2 / 1;
  • Q4                   5 / 3; and
  • Total               12 / 6. And we Won.  Note the Scoring Shot differential – 20 (Us) / 14 (Them).

Summary from the AFL website?

A terrific win for the Magpies, who applied strong pressure throughout and beat the Dockers at their own forward half game. Collingwood finished with major advantages in tackles (88-61), forward half intercepts (35-21), inside 50 entries (60-46), and a career-high four goals from substitute Oliver Henry.

Statistics & Lessons:

Team Statistics (identifying only those numbers where there was a significant difference):

  • Hit Outs                               33 (us) / 59 (them). Freo resoundingly won the HO but failed dismally to exploit this advantages – see next;
  • Clearances                          45 / 44. The next step. Freo should have dominated this, but didn’t. Well done, Midfield, doing ‘the sharking’ to bring the HO deficit back to equivalence;
  • Centre                                 10 / 11; and
  • Stoppages                           35 / 33;
  • Disposal Efficiency              64.8% / 65.9%. Across the whole game – no discernible difference, but look at the Inside 50 numbers, below, where it really counts. There was no distinction in numbers of individual’s with reasonable DE between the teams – 4 / 4;
  • Inside 50s                            60 / 46. A huge difference, particularly when you look at the starting HO – The critical step towards goal, and…;
  • Disposal Efficiency              35.0% / 30.4%. So, there more often and used better;
  • Marks                                   8 / 2. Compare the Marks across the game, below. This was another major advantage to us;
  • Tackles                                  15 / 4. Says it all, actually;
  • Marks                                   62 / 72. Okay, we were out-marked throughout the game. Didn’t seem to matter;
  • Tackles                                   89 / 60. Pressure. Comprehensive pressure;
  • Scoring Shots                       20 / 14. Then the goals?
  • Goals scored                      12 / 6. And the game was Won.

Application. The sum of Contested Possessions and Tackles, as a measure of application, gives – 241 (us) / 235 (them) – a reflection that both sides worked pretty hard, but the difference in Tackles led to us dominating the game. And one other statistic that I usually don’t take much notice of – 1%’ers – 74 /59 – the measure of spoils, reflecting the effort by all. Examples – Both Moore and Howe on multiple occasions, Cameron early in Q4 and Noble’s trio of effort later in Q4.

So, what is going on? A terrific performance applauded by commentators and the coach. The outstanding question will be “How well can we play in the dry against a quality opponent?”. Well, we’re about to find out.

Best. Listed Best were: Crisp, Henry, Adams, Howe, Lipinski, De Goey and Cameron. It was a magnificent ‘team effort’ but I would consider adding Noble, Moore and Sidebottom? The Coaches included Moore and Noble. Well done.

Ground Reporting. Now, I know Perth is a long way away, but I’d love to hear from those of us who simply watched it on TV;  please?

VFL. The VFL side had a Bye last weekend but would play a game against the AFL Academy. Haven’t seen any outcome. Another ruck? Their next competition game is against Werribee at Avalon Oval on Sunday, 29 May; bounce at 12.00pm. The team currently sits 2nd on the Ladder with a percentage of 154.4%. Good going, guys. Keep it up.

Round 11

Collingwood versus Carlton.

Sunday, 29 May 2022 at the MCG; bounce at 3.20pm.

Carlton are sitting 3rd on the Ladder with 8 Wins and 2 Losses and a percentage of 114.6% – pretty impressive for a team that finished 13th last year. This compares with our 10th place with 5 Wins and 5 Losses and a percentage of 102.7% – pretty Impressive for a team that finished 17th last year. Current betting? $2.72 c/f $1.46. Yep, Carlton are justifiable favourites, though not by much when you take the Ladder position / detail into account.

Carlton’s season, so far:

Round 1 – Win over Richmond by 25 Points;

Round 2 – Win over Western Bulldogs by 12;

Round 3 – Win over Hawthorn by 1;

Round 4 – Loss to GC Suns by 30;

Round 5 – Win over Port Adelaide by 3;

Round 6 – Loss to Fremantle by 35;

Round 7 – Win over North by 50;

Round 8 – Win over Adelaide by 48;

Round 9 – Win over GWS by 30; and

Round 10 – Win over Sydney by 15.

So, an interesting season, so far. They could, very easily have been 6 / 4 if the games against Hawthorn and Port had finished differently; same regarding their wins over the Dogs and the Swans. Their season is not comprehensive. They are beatable.

The Best from each game (plus the Coaches’ reporting of each game) gives me the Deductions and the list of players to watch.

Injuries: Go to www.carltonfc.com.au/matches/injury-list. Check later in week. Likely serious exclusion – Ed. Curnow, not to be confused with Charlie, continuing to perform.

Deductions?

Carlton have been performing. Go to www.afl.com.au/video/767416/footy-feed-is-carlton-the-real-deal-time-to-start-believing?videoId=767416&modal=true&type=video&publishFrom=1653287394001 for an assessment. This includes Carlton’s injury challenges and the performance of a few. Carlton’s achievement regarding Clearances are notable. So? Pursue that difference – win the Midfield battle.

In relation to that, play special attention to Cripps in the Middle, maybe a tagging job, and Curnow at FF, close defence.

Who to watch?

  • Cripps – Centre;
  • Curnow – FF;
  • Reitering – FB / BP;
  • Walsh – CHF;
  • Hewett – Rover; and
  • Docherty – HB.

Maybe also include De Koning – Ruck.

Anything else, people? Your views?

Us

Injuries: Cox.

Team: Hard to change a winning team.

  • In: Begg. Any other likely? How is Roughead travelling?; and
  • Out: Cox.

Things to do – same as previous weeks:

  • Focus on the ruck battle – very important for the next step – Clearances, then the Inside 50s;
  • Seek to shark the Clearances in the Centre bounces and at stoppages around the ground;
  • Better establish Forward targets – a variety is essential. Please do not take Moore out of the Back 6;
  • Maintain the speed of movement; avoid stoppages or delays (particularly amongst the Backline) – open the game up;
  • Continue to enjoy your footy; and
  • Pursue the execution of the high-intensity Game Plan for the entire four Quarters.

Your thoughts would be welcomed.

Result

  • My Result. Collingwood to Win by 17 Points. BOG – Pendlebury with 27 Disposals, 8 Clearances, 3 Tackles and 4 GA; Ginnivan to get 5, again. Your thoughts?

Go get em, boys.

  1. I’m confused. The www.afl.com.au/fixture?Competition=1&CompSeason=43&MatchTimezone=MY_TIME&Regions=2&ShowBettingOdds=1&GameWeeks=11&Teams=1&Venues=13#byround

indicates FTA coverage on Channel 7, but the Broadcast Guide at www.afl.com.au/broadcast-guide-premiership doesn’t. Just in case, head to the pub.

Weather. Clear and sunny, but cold (okay cold in Melbourne, hardly cold in Canberra or Harden/Murrumburrah – Google it). Follows three days of occasional storms and light rain. Likely to be slippery. Get out the boots with stops.

Round 12

Sunday, 5 June; bounce at 2.10pm.

Hawthorn versus Collingwood at the MCG.
