Cam Hooke’s Collingwood Life: Nathan Buckley resigns

G’day to all True Believers.

Well, it’s happened. And everyone has been kept well informed through the magic of the digital age.

Am I sorry Bucks has gone? Of course. Few players in our great game gain the recognition and accolades he received; most players toil away, achieving little recognition over the respect and friendships of their teammates and opponents. But, all are key to our great game it wouldn’t work.

Are Eddie’s and Buck’s departures linked? Undoubtedly, but mostly as a function of the team’s performance. If the team had been doing well, well up the Eight, would any of this have happened? Who knows. I certainly agree the advice frequently offered, by people who usually know more about this than I, that the President’s tenure, and the rest of the Board’s, needed to be limited. The coach’s? Not sure. And I’m not sure what KPIs figure in his/her performance assessment.

I’m very pleased that every commentator, within the Club or external, has recognised Buck’s contribution to the Club over the extended period and his total commitment over that time.

Thanks, Bucks, for everything. Be in no doubt of our recognition of your contribution to our Club and our great game.

Oh yes, as an aside, what happens if the Pies’ side on Monday plays like we know they can, for four Quarters and demolishes the Ladder leader? And how much will the coach change figure after our Bye when a number of our key players are available and back?

Go Pies.

more Whatifs? Even when Mr Whatif has gone? The fact is that Dom Sheed kicked that goal just like Hopkins before him, it’s a fact of life. We wouldn’t be having that conversation if he won but he didn’t.

So like Weidemann, Shaw, Rose and Mann he lost the close one, and repeated that feat the following year to show us it was no fluke. After 10 years I’m still angry, for what it’s worth.
