Bryan Wood

They said he’d be a Tige for life
and that was understood.
They said he’d never leave this club…
but one day Bryan would.

  1. Wood has a proud heritage in Australian rules. Cameron “Blocker” Wood at Brisbane, Collingwood and Carlton in the noughties was the original “big log”. And the Woodcock brothers – Roger (Splintadick) and Don – were Norwood SANFL royalty as Rulebook has chronicled.
Woodville FC in the SANFL were the home of Blight, Maylin and Nathan Buckley’s dad Ray. Before they were amalgamated with my West Torrens in the late 80’s to save both clubs being alternating wooden spooners.
Woodas. Shoodas. Coodas. Coodabeens. Its a rich school of footy history and culture.
Loved watching Bryan Wood at Richmond. His blonde hair, big chest and athleticism gave him the Aryan air of a Sheedy stormtrooper. Players lose their menace when they are traded and become utilitarian assets in the footy trade wars.
    Love your work DB.

  2. I spoke to B Wood about his leaving Richmond recently. He got a call from Geelong asking if he wanted to come down and play there. “Geelong? Why would I want to play there? Who gave you my number?”
“Graeme Richmond told us to give you a ring.”
That was the moment he knew GR was shopping him around.
This sort of stuff tore the heart out of RFC for a long while. GR went so far as to break his own heart to prove he didn’t have a heart by sacking St Francis Bourke.
Of course you can read more about it in my book on Balme (the m/s of which I sent to Random House yesterday.)

  3. Thanks PB. And don’t forget the Morwoods. And for a WA connection, I give you that mad runner between the wickets, Graeme Wood.

Interesting story re Bryan Wood AJC. Always seemed strange that he got to Essendon after three flags with the Tigers. Now we know how. I was wondering how the Balme book was coming along. Look forward to checking it out.
