Balcony Banter: The luck of the draw

Lynda Carrol reflected on last weekend’s drawn clash between Melbourne and Hawthorn for the MCC’s Members blog, Balcony Banter.

The results set her mind thinking about games from yesteryear that also resulted in a draw, including a couple of memorable Grand Finals. Is a draw a complete result? Should there be extra time to determine a winner? Perhaps some kind of shoot out along the line of soccer’s penalties?

Read Lynda’s post here.

    Draws I love:
2010 grand final. If not for that titanic struggle, we would not have Collingwood’s greatest performance in a GF the following week. I’m still cheesed off with the cardinals for abolishing the grand final replay and preferring extra time.
Honorable mentions – 1990 qualifying final, 2007 first semi final.

Draws I hate – draws in 1991 and 1995 seasons which saw the Magpies miss out on finals by that much…
Plus draw v Richmond 2020 – only kicked 5 goals and we were Steviced!

Draws I’m ambivalent about – 1977 grand final – Pies were headed for victory with a 27 point lead when North played its best football of the season to draw level. But at least this time we didn’t lose until the following week.

I say leave the draw alone. If you’re not good enough to score more points than the opposition, you don’t deserve the win

Draws in the minor round are a valid result, and must be maintained accordingly. Draws in the finals stuff up the schedule. Extra time? Or should the lower ranked side have to win in normal time to proceed. Extra time or replay for the GF? I’m not fussed. The occurances are not frequent.

Your second option for mine, Daryl. Home and away results arguably count for too little as it is; the higher team on the pre-finals ladder should proceed in the case of a drawn final – including the grand final. No replays, no extra time and definitely no goalkicking shootouts.
