Avoca Cup 2014

As has been our wont over the last decade Maryanne and I trundled up to Avoca for their Cup Meeting.  A picturesque  track, nestled against the backdrop of the Pyrenees mountains, makes a perfect setting for a  race meeting on a beautiful Spring Saturday afternoon. Last years crowd was estimated at 6,000, this year seemed bigger.

Caulfield Cup day , like Melbourne Cup day sees race meetings in a myriad of locations in South Eastern Australia. Bendigo, Deniliquin, Wagga  are but a few locations, but Avoca is our setting for Caulfield Cup day.

A seven  race card, with the first a maiden, over  nine and a bit furlongs,  saw the races kick off at 1.00 pm. Nikita Beriman who had ridden the Cup winner in 2013 started the day with a win on Brown Energy. Maybe the PM’s recent comment about coal being good for humanity was an omen.

Another interesting maiden win occurred in the third when Geelong based trainer Glenn Thornton had his son Boris ride Polinelli to victory. The horse was unplaced in all six previous starts , but romped home here. I can only guess the horse was named after former Geelong wingman Tony Polinelli, who was a regular in the Cats sides of the 60’s, before  retiring half way through the 1971 season.

As the clock ticked over, the excitement built. Race six, the Cup was about to start.  Finally the  starters were brougt to the barrier  .The 2013 winner Get Out Of Town was in the field of starters, but the winning jockey from 2013 Nikita Beriman had a different mount in 2014, being aboard the top weight Gottino carrying a whopping 63 kilos. Despite leading for much of the race Gottino was run down by Scardeymac ridden by Boris Thornton, who stuck to the rails to win nicely . Carrying 52 kilos the 11 kilo difference was a factor, but congratulations to Boris, and the connections of Scaredymac.

Riding honours on the day go to Nikita Beriman with two  winners and  two placings, as well as Boris Thornton riding two winners, including the Avoca Cup.

Training honours were shared with all seven winners having different trainers. Special mention to Kyneton as three Kyneton trainers were successful, they being Frank Conlon, Brent Stanley and Christine Jeffries.

Where to next for us. There’s the Berrigan Cup on Derby Day , Corowa races on Melbourne Cup day, not to mention the Avoca meeting in early December. Watch this space.

Nice stuff Glen, no doubt you would have heard Frank Conlon when Brown Energy crossed the line, very funny bloke and a very good horseman, brother of Jimmy Conlon.

  2. B.Stanley might make a go of it. Assume it was well supported?

  3. Good one Glen – there is nothing better than a good meeting in the bush.Next year?
Have fun travelling toall you mentioned

  4. Oges, i plan to be at Corowa on Melbourne Cup Day 2014. There are a few plans for 2015 including Gunbower, Manangatang, and Tumbarrumba. As they say, the future is unwritten.
