Answers to the Australia v West Indies 2nd Test Quiz

The Almanac’s 2nd Test Match quiz received an appalling response, nevertheless we thank everyone who bothered.  The lucky winner was Devon Port of Devonport.  Congratulations Devon on your scintillating entry.  For the record, the answers were:

1. C): Neither Nathan Coulter-Nile nor mystery spinner Fred Nile has played a first class game since March.  The Reverend was on standby for the Boxing Day test.

2. False: The West Indies’ preparation for Boxing Day was not restricted to  the board game Test Match, they were generously afforded a 2 day game against a Victorian B team in Geelong

3. True: In their spare time administrators responsible for the New Zealand and West Indies tour schedules enjoy pulling the wings off flies

4. False: Alanis Morrissette’s recent update of Ironic did not contain a reference to Shaun Marsh’s demotion to 12th man

5. 1 C) Continental drift, 2 B) Treacle, 3 A) West Indian over rate on day 1, 4 D) The South American three-toed sloth

6. 1 B) Daryl Somers, 2 A) Marlon Samuels, 3 C) David Warner

7. False: When introduced to Devendra Bishoo one is not obliged to say ‘bless you’

8. The bowler pictured is Kraigg Brathwaite.  He plays krigget for the West Indies.

9. Correct: No one can comprehend why Australia decided against promoting Mitch Marsh and Peter Nevill to 3 and 4 in their second innings

10. True: Requiring another 172 runs, in Australia’s 2nd innings Adam Voges was (mercifully) denied the opportunity to retire with a test average of 100

11. Incorrect: The figure of 7,161 represents the 4th day crowd, not Channel 9 commentator references to the golden years of West Indian cricket

12. Correct: The 4th day attendance was calculated using the method employed by GWS at Spotless Stadium (i.e. seagulls and other passing bird life included)

13. B) broken up and sold for scrap, 2 C) banished to the Phantom Zone via a 2D plane of glass à la Superman 2, 3 A) relegated to Box Hill Reporter B2 Grade, 4 E) forced to watch The Cricket Show on a loop for 3 days, 5 D) receive meaningful support from the ICC and lead member nations

14. Correct: That a total of 127,069 attended the Boxing Day Test at $60+ per adult was a Christmas miracle

  1. Jeff with the answer to number 8, how did i get the word Sherbet mixed into my answer?

    Glen!

  2. superb

  3. I missed the quiz Jeff, but I think I got most of the questions right working backwards.

  4. Luke Reynolds says

    Nice work Jeff.
Did the update to Alanis Morrissette’s “Ironic” actually include something ironic this time?

  5. Interesting you should ask Luke – she sang with James Corden on his chat show and one of the lines was

“It’s singing Ironic, but there are no ironies”.
