Almanackers, what about a theme song?
Citrus Bob Utber has just published a story on the site rebuking the standard and quality of the celebratory singing of footy team theme songs after a match victory. His story can be read HERE.
In his article Citrus Bob also issued a challenge to our community of the need for a Footy Almanac theme song, one that can be sung at Footy Almanac gatherings, and other celebratory events.
So, Almanackers, what can you come up with? We’d love to hear your suggestions.
Your suggestions can be placed in the comments section below.
I’ll start the ball rolling!
We Love You: The Almanac Song
(To the tune “She Loves You” by The Beatles)
Shortened Version
We love you, yeah, yeah, yeah
We love you, yeah, yeah, yeah
We love you, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
We love a good old yarn
And a feed to go as well
Our stories bright and bold
On our pages we do tell
We’re Al-man-ackers
And you know that can’t be bad
Yes, we’re Al-man-ackers
And you know it makes us glad Ooohhh (or Yeahhh)
We’re led by John T Harms
And he knows his craft so well
But it’s lunch he’s thinking of
Plus the books he’s got to sell
We’re Al-man-ackers
And you know that can’t be bad
Yes, we’re Al-man-ackers
And you know it makes us glad Ooohhh
We love you, yeah, yeah, yeah
We love you, yeah, yeah, yeah
With support like that
You know it makes us glad
With support like that
You know it makes us glad
With support like that
You know it makes us glad
yeah, yeah, yeah
yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

About Almanac Admin

Col, I think this might be your effort. Almost game, set and match, I’d say. I thought that something to the tune of ‘Always look on the bright side of life’ might reflect the spirit of the Almanac. I might play around with it and see if anything emerges.
A good idea from CB.
Give Greg Champion from the Coodabeens this idea for a song and he will come up with something witty. He is the expert.
Always Look On The Blight Side Of Life ?
“There’s a hack moaning flak “we should give the coach the sack”
On the pages of Al-ma-nac;
Where the scoreboards a growin’ and the midfield’s a flowin’
Beneath the jaundiced eye.
There’s my mates and my memories a waitin’ for me
And the champs of my childhood once more I shall see;
And I’ll read and have fun ‘cos I’ve given up the Hun
For the pages of Al-ma-nac”
Video of younger self below singing original lyrics “Road to Gundagai” but my estate will transfer in perpetuity to Malarkey Pty Ltd.
New version to premiere at North Fitzroy Arms for season opener Tigers v Blues on March 19. Formal attire required.
To the tune of Toreador:
We are the Knackers
The greatest mugs of all.
We are the Knackers
We’re never on the ball.
Weeee muddle through
As best we’re able.
With stubby holder sitting on the table.
Our banner flies on high
But we all remain calm
Down at the North Fitzroy Arms.
The ball’s rolling! Great suggestions gents!
I have come up with a Footy Almanac theme song, to be sung to the tune of “Come On Aussie Come On”.
The Footy Almanac is a great read.
John Harms has put this community in the lead.
Glen likes writing cricket.
Yoshi’s Saintst will be a big ticket.
And the articles are even better than they seem.
Mr Hauser has the womens’ T20 Cup on tap.
Yvette Wroby has put the AFLW on the map.
The readers have their fun,
When the novelty teams have begun,
And we can’t enough of the Almanac.
Come On Almanackers Come On Come On
Come On Almanackers Come On!
Please allow us to introduce ourselves
We are folk of literary taste
Been around for a many a year
Seen moments of sporting grace
Gonna need more time for the rest, keep running into legal issues.
Sorry Dusty Springfield and writers: All I want to be with you
I don’t know what it is that makes me love you so
I only know I never want to let you go
‘Cause you started something, can’t you see
That ever since we met you’ve had a hold on me
I happens to be true, I only want to write for you
It doesn’t matter where we go or what sport it is
I want to read every post of the day with you
Look what has happened with just one comment
I never knew that I could be in love like this
It’s crazy but it’s true, I only want to write with you
You stopped and published me
Asked me if I’d care to write some more
I fell into your open site
I didn’t stand a chance
Now, listen, honey, I just want to be published every week
As long as we’re together, honey, I don’t care
‘Cause JTH started something, can’t you see
That ever since we met you’ve had a hold on me
No matter what you do, I only want publish with you
You stopped and smiled at me
Asked me if I’d care to post
I fell into your open arms
I didn’t stand a chance
Now hear me darling, I just want to be beside you everywhere
As long as we’re together, honey, I don’t care
‘Cause you started something, can’t you see
That ever since we met you’ve had a hold on me
No matter what you do, I only want to be published with you
I said, no matter, no matter what you do, I only want to be writing with you
Love your work guys. Graham…that’s great
I have 2 Almanacker theme songs, the first one is to the tune of New York, New York and the second one is to the tune of My Way, both by Frank Sinatra.
The first one is:
Start spreading the sporting news
I’m reading it today
I want to see all of it
Almanac, Almanac
Cricket, football and tennis
And the Olympic Games
Write from the heart of it
In the Footy Almanac
Those Old Navy Blues
Have lost their premiership ways
Can the Saints make a brand new start of it
In The Footy Almanac
And you bet Almanackers
If you can write well and fair
You know, you’re gonna write well anywhere
It’s up to you
Almanac, Almanac, Almanac!
The second one is:
And now the AFL season is near
We need to know which teams are hurtin’
Gold Coast, We’ll say it clear
No finals, of which we’re certain
Almanackers have a sporting life that’s full
We’ve travelled to games home and away
But more, much more than this
We’ve written it our way!
For Almanackers, what have we got?
If not writers, then we have naught
To write the things we truly feel
And that’s the words of one who’s real
The record shows, nearly anything goes
And wrote it our way!
LARRY YOU HAVE NAILED IT
What have I started!
Yes Larry there is a Santa Claus and as.St.Yvette said “You have nailed it.” Mind you I am. A FS fan and ” I did it my way” is my theme song.
I start rehearsals tomorrow.
Larry as a Frank Sinatra fan and as St.Yvette says ‘LARRY YOU HAVE NAILED IT!”
My own theme song for years has been “I did it My Way”
As the conductor together with Bomber Ritchie I will commence rehearsals tomorrow with a view for a first showing out of town possible North Fitzroy in the near future.
Citrus
Quite like your Dios!
If there’s a song that would suggest a game?
And a guernsey or two.
Design and colours?
Great contributions all!
There’s a few lines and rhymes that could be better, compare it to the ‘Get yr ya yas out’ rendition
Please allow us to introduce ourselves
We are folk of literary taste
Been around for many a year
Seen moments of sporting grace
We were around when full forwards
Kicked a dozen goals a game
Made damn sure that Oatley
Backed away, saved Footscray
Pleased to meet you, Footy Almanac’s the name
Football, tennis, cricket, golf, we love all the games
We stuck around the MCG
When our team was going down in flames
Wrote lengthy screeds of criticism
The club president screamed in vain
We cheered a catch at an Ashes match
Saw the batters score, after a rough patch
Pleased to meet you, Footy Almanac’s the name
Football, tennis, cricket, golf, we love all the games
We watched with glee while our favourite teams
Fought for a dozen years, gods they became
We shouted jokes at the opposition
But we all knew, could have been you and me
Let us please introduce ourselves
We are folk of literary taste
And we write words about contests
From Tokyo to Bombay
Get down
Just as every backman’s a forward
And all the bowlers bat
Heads or tails, we are Almanackers
We read, we write, we chat
And when we meet up, we are courteous
We have sympathy, we have taste
We all of us know politesse
In our souls, it’s on our face
Pleased to meet you, Footy Almanac’s the name
Football, tennis, cricket, golf, we love all the games
Woo!
Great songs have been created, and I want Graham’s one to be chosen as he honours individuals including myself.
Thanks Graham for the wonderful work that make me smile.
Now, now Yoshi. Remember it is all about TEAM!
To the tune of I still call Australia home:
We’ve read sports in newspapers in most suburbs and towns
From Geelong to St Kilda and even Carrum Downs
But no matter how far or how wide we roam
The Footy Almanac still makes us feel at home
Our team often travels away from the MCG
To venues interstate, if not a game overseas
We write from the heart be it in Sydney, China or Rome
‘Cos The Footy Almanac makes us feel at home
Someday our team will win a flag once more
Then the Almanackers will report on our game for sure
We realise something we’ve always known
The Footy Almanac still makes us feel at home
But no matter how far or how wide we roam
We still call The Almanac
We still call The Almanac
We still call The Almanac our second home
But no matter how far or wide we roam
We still call The Almanac
We still call The Almanac
We still call The Almanac our second home
This Almanacker theme song is to the tune of “Up there Cazaly”:
Well we write sports articles as a hobby
And on any given day comes the time
We go to a sport that turns us on
So that we can relax and unwind
Almanackers, we like writing
About many sports that are around
When you line all the sportswriters up together
The Almanackers win hands down
Up there Almanackers
Glen will write
About football, cricket and The Olympics
And Luke Steggemann reviews a boxing fight
Up there Almanackers
Yoshi’s a revelation
Yvette Wroby could be one of the Saints Angels
Her Saints are out there to win
Up there Almanackers
Liam Hauser will write
About the womens’ T20 Cup
And how the Aussies will fight
Up there Almanackers
Show John Harms how well you write
Report as best you can
The readers are far and wide
The reader’s on your side!
I am in awe of you all.
JTH – just another book eh?
Richmond theme song inspired by the spiritus mundi.
Oh, we’re the Almanac
A fading fury,
we’re the Almanac.
For any reason you will
see us have a whinge
while drinking port and gin
But we don’t fight,
we write and write
and give our thoughts
a spin
Oh, we’re the Almanac,
when we seem weakened,
we give the young ones a go !
Unlike writers of old,
we’ve broken the mould,
for we’re the Alma…
Green, White and Black !
Oh, were the Almanac.
Plenty of creativity in this thread! Special mention goes to Graham and Stephen for including me in their songs, although I’m not sure why Graham refers to me as Mr Hauser, rather than Liam Hauser. Moreover, it’s good to see so much interest in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.
This theme song is to be sung to the tune of the Fitzroy Football Club Song.
We are the guys from The Footy Almanac
We write sports articles just for you
Great readers’ comments are our victory
And we cover sports through and through
Write from the heart is our war cry
With any sports topic, we’ll always try
Footy Almanac, Footy Almanac
The community we hold this dear
At the North Fitzroy Arms this year!
Kate Birrell – re you suggesting a jumper for The Knackers?
Roy – from a historical point of view and the spiritual (in more ways than one) home of the Knackers.
Who would want to be on the judging panel ?- Andrew D for one he has an ear for a great performer eg.MeatLoaf
Bob – I am
This Almanacker theme song is to the tune of Piano Man, by Billy Joel.
It’s 11 at night on a Saturday
My Footy team’s just had a win
There’s an Almanacker sitting next to me
At the Fitzroy Arms with his Tonic and Gin
I say “Please can you write me a Footy article
And praise my team with everything you know
It was a great team we beat and the performance was complete
And the players put on a great show”
La la la di da da
La la Di da da dum
Write from the heart, we’re Almanackers
Write us an article any night
Well we’re all in the mood for a good read
And we really know how to write
Now John Harms makes The Footy Almanac so fine
He encourages us to write so free
Yoshi’s Saints are quick, no joke, giving St Kilda hope
A second St Kilda flag is what he wants to see
Liam Hauser says “The Aussie girls just won the T20 Cup”
As the smile ran away from his face
“Well I’m sure the boys can do the same
With Starc and Cummins’ extra pace”
Oh la la la di da da
La la di da da dum
Now Yvette Wroby is an Author and Artist
Who loves St Kilda and AFLW in her life
And I’m writing to Glen, whose novelty teams number ten
If it’s not, then I will be in strife!
Write from the heart, we’re Almanackers
Write us an article any night
Well we’re all in the mood for a good read
And we really know how to write
This is to the tune of Hey Jude:
Hey Knackers, don’t feel so sad
If your article sounds more like a letter
Remember to write from the heart
Then you can start to make it better
Hey Knackers, you went let us down
You are writers and not jet setters
Remember to write from the heart
Then you’ll begin to make it better
So this community is out to win
Hey Knackers begin
You’re waiting for comments to write back to
And you know that it’s so true
Hey Knackers, you”like do
The improvement you need is to be a bit bolder
Na-na-na, na,na
Na-na-na, na
Hey Knackers, don’t feel so sad
Take a bad article and make it better
Remember to never give in
Then you’ll begin to make it better
Better better better better better, ah!
Na, na, na, na na ( yeah! Yeah, yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah)
Na-na-na, na Knackers
Na, na, na na-na-na na
Na-na-na na, Knackers
Na, na, na, na-na-na, na
Na-na-na na, Knackers
Na na na, na-na-na na
Na-na-na na, Knackers (Knack, Knack, Knacky, Knacky, Knacky, Knacky, ow wow!)
Kate, an Almanac jumper is a great idea. May I suggest green, being the only colour not worn by an ‘AFL’ team, and a proper V, from the shoulders.
Come to think of it, the old woollen South Melbourne guernsey is a good template.
yes = KB there must be a green in there somewhere if not the predominant colour. Not many “Green Teams” around.Paul Daffy will know them all Here are just a couple – Imperials (mildura), Garfield, Tooradin, Gembrook, Leongatha.
No big V as we are cosmopolitan.
This is to the tune of the Melbourne Football Club song.
We’re Grand Old Almanackers
We’re from The Footy Almanac
We write sports articles just for you
We’re a community of the sports we love
From football, cricket and tennis too
Write from the heart beats true
From the Almanackers to you
And we like great comments too
Should you want to see the lot
Keep reading an article or two!
Hawthorn football club theme song tune:
We’re a happy team at The Footy Almanac
We’ the mighty writing Knacks
We love our community and we let our readers in
Writing their comments with a grin (at The Almanac)
Come what may you’ll find us writing
About most sports with the facts
Write from the heart and have some fun
Is the way we are at The Almanac
We are the mighty writing Knacks
Just look at the Western United FC jumper.
Green and black.
It looks brilliant.
Hi Earl, Smokie and Bob
Exactly what I had been thinking; green base ; green with a bite and a zest to it! Black a definite in design and or shape; a sash would be in keeping with early traditions. And an accent possibly using the Almanac footy/logo on the right upper crest (sitting on green not black).
Only other potential colour that could be incorporated would be a suggestion of the Australian blue sky.
Always wondered why green hasn’t been adopted by a team.. is it the clash?
This is to the tune of the Essendon Football Club Song.
See the Almanackers celebrate up,up!
At the North Fitzroy Arms Hotel,
Our guys who are in the writing game,
Are always looking for a good article to their name!
See the Almanackers celebrate up, up,
Write from the heart holds no fear,
We all try our best,
And we like a beer,
As the Almanackers celebrate up!
Hi Don (and the many other nom de plumes you have been using)
We are intrigued by your many suggestions and would love to talk to you about some Almanac stuff. Please email us at [email protected] and let us know how we can contact you.
Regards
JTH
Hi Kate
Sherwood green? Thinking of the old woollen sleeveless guernseys, green with a black collar and black neck and armhole trim would look great. My old South jumper was one of a limited run a mate had manufactured in ’97.
I’d buy one. #39, thanks.
To be sung to the Swans song:
Cheer cheer, the Almanac site,
Honour the name by day and by night.
Lift that noble masthead high,
Revel in the stories, delight in the style.
Whether the odds be great or be small,
Writing from the heart will always stand tall.
So, let us sing proudly, loud and clear,
Almanac, Almanac, Cheer Cheer Cheer!
Loving these song suggestions.
An Almanac guernsey is a wonderful idea! Green is fantastic on a footy jumper, I know of a beautiful design featuring green sadly no longer in use-
https://www.footyalmanac.com.au/old-woollen-footy-jumpers-south-purrumbete-fc/
Best suggestions so far in order of entry IMHO are;
Coodabeen Champion
Larry (2nd one)
Earl
Plenty of green running around in the Adelaide Metro League Luke.
Cheers all in these very interesting times.
