  1. The title of this article got me thinking about doing a football team where each player has a surname of a well known author.

The criteria is that the surname can only be used once. Peter Wright (Writer) was the exception and he was included to strengthen the team.

The spelling of the surname doesn’t need to be the same, as long as it’s similar or sounds the same.

A few players had the exact name of a famous author.

Some players were played out of position to be included in the team.

This is the VFL/AFL Team of Authors:

B: Len Woolf (Haw 1947-48/Virginia Woolf), Ken Christie (Melb 1951-55/Agatha Christie), Alan Joyce (Haw 1961-65/James Joyce)

HB: Victor Hugo (SM 2 gm 1980/Victor Hugo), Peter Mann (NM/Fremantle/Thomas Mann), Colin Austen (Haw/Rich 1940-52/Jane Austen)

C: Jason Wild (Coll 1995-1999/Oscar Wilde), Jack Steele (GWS/St K/Danielle Steele), Arthur Dickens (Fitz/Melb 1923-32/Charles Dickens)

HF: Barry Rowlings (Haw/Rich/J. K. Rowling), Peter Wright (Gold Coast/Essen/Writer), Matthew Golding (Adel 7 games 1999/William Golding)

F: Jade Gresham (St K/Ess/John Grisham), Michael Patterson (Rich/James Patterson), Mick Plant (SM 4 games 1972/Lynda La Plante)

R: Steven King (Geel/St K/Stephen King), Dale Lewis (Syd Swans 1990-01/C. S. Lewis), George Hemingway (Ess 1 game 1918/Ernest Hemingway)

This team will play a match against the team of The Footy Almanac writers, who share a surname with a VFL/AFL player.

Venue: Any stadium with naming rights (writes)

Entertainment: “Paperback Writer” by The Beatles and “I Write the Songs”, by Barry Manilow

After match refreshments: The Charles Dickens Tavern

Let’s hope for a good game of football where there’ll be something to write home about!
