Almanac Weekend Sports Results 10-4-2016

Weekend Rant – Horton hears a who

I remember a time when swimming was big, when Ch 9 would break into Hey Hey It’s Saturday with a 15 minute cut to the Men’s 1500 m Freestyle with either Perkins or Hackett, when swimming was broadcast on prime time and swimmers were major personalities sold on every Cereal Box and Sanitarium product. Surely the hi-jinx of London Olympics is not solely responsible for the malaise in the pool? The Australian girls are world beaters, Campbell sisters doing it for themselves and we do have a few World Champions in the pack.

Is it just me or have we taken an ambivalence pill when it comes to swimming? Swimming Championships and selection trails for the Rio Olympics is shown on 7Mate. The Olympic Broadcaster no less sees this sport so incidental that it will only broadcast on its channel that no-one watches, a sport that was previously so popular it interrupted prime time.

Currently, the big news was Hackett not making the swim team, big deal, my expectations of him were, well who cares. But what about the man who won the 400m , Mack Horton? He swam a time that was faster than Hackett in his prime. Horton at 19 has swum the 2nd fastest time by an Australian, beaten only by Thorpedo and the fastest in the year but little to scant mention of him in various media dispatches. If that was Thorpedo or Hackett, Perkins, Klim this would be big news.

In other male swimming news, World Champ Mitch Larkin missed out on a World Record but sent a warning shot to his competitors, “I think they know I can swim fast. And I know I am capable of it,” said Larkin.

And now here are the more enlightening sporting results for the weekend.

AFL

Round 3 and Swans, Suns and Kangas continue their unbeaten streak with Hawks lucky winners in a tight game with Doggies. Saints are the big winners of the round defeating at lack lustre Collingwood, Port finally producing the football they know they can play (at home) and the Crows polished off a Richmond side not quite sure who they are supposed to be. In the Western Derby the Eagles flew highest on a day that Big man Sandy lands was rushed to hospital.

On a sombre note, we hope Almanac favourite Bob Murphy’s injury will not be a career ending incident.

Cycling Paris – Roobaix

Australian Matthew Hayman capped a dedicated career on the bike n winning the prestigious Paris Roobaix. The Orica GreenEDGE rider has ridden this race 15 times and becomes the second Australian to win the race on cobblestones since Stuart O’Grady won in 2007, beating four time winner Tom Boonen. The win was all the more remarkable as early escapee  Hayman, who had already twice made it in the top ten of the Queen of Classics, had broken his arm only five weeks ago and had hardly raced since.

Boxing

Manny Pacquiao defeated Tim Bradley in Las Vegas and announced his retirement to focus on Philippines elections next month. The 37-year-old eight-division world champion won in a unanimous points decision by identical margins of 116-110 on all three cards. Pac Man will be looking forward to being elected a Senator in next month’s elections and will have no time to resume his impressive boxing career.

Rugby 7s

Hong Kong audiences were subjected to the Hoff’s singing at this year’s HK 7’s tournament. Fortunately Fiji entertained the crowd with a 21-7 win over NZ in the Final. Australia finished fourth, losing to SA 14-12, missing a penalty attempt after the siren that would have given them the win.

The bumpy road to Roubaix – great performance by Matthew Hayman.

Likewise great result in Masters Golf with Willett getting up in final round. Television coverage and obsessive focus on Jordan Speech was galling.

    FANTASTIC SUMMARY FOR ALMANAC SUPPORTERS.

  2. Wow. Great summary.
    Emoji: two thumbs up
