Almanac Weekend Sport Review – April’s Fool: Ch 7 have no idea about promoting AFL in Sydney

Dear Almanackers,

After zipping up the Hume for a few days and having to play the tourist with the kids, I have a serious question to ask.

What is the AFL doing in Sydney or more precisely what is Channel 7 doing to the AFL in Sydney? In a market with two teams, you would think that the Dockland bosses would encourage C7 to broadcast on their other channels at the very least all AFL prime time games? No, better watch some other non-rating show!

This correspondent was the unfortunate resident in a house with 3 Foxtel outlets and NO SPORT. The only channel I could watch Sport was the News and sitting in a comfy chair with several G&Ts prepping for Tigers v Pies in Sydney prime time Friday – to my major disappointment, no televised AFL, ditto Saturday.  I wore my AFL app on the trusty iPhone silly with downloads and score checks but we live in an immediate society and cannot get live or replay Footy on the Free to air. I have no problems for Fox Sports picking up the slack left behind by C7 but one can take only so many Philip Glass Operas and Documentaries, I want my AFL match of the Day!

Oh I did manage to watch Club Rugby and see the Galloping Greens, Randwick and Uni play in front of a crowd of  so many, live on TV at Coogee Beach, why not the AFL on C7 2 or mate or whatever it is they have broadcast a game they already are broadcasting elsewhere?

Anyway gripe over, I did manage to make it back to civilisation in time to watch the last half of my Swans roll the Blues.

On to the real business, Weekend’s sporting results

AFL

Round 2 and the season is only in nappies. Geelong was unable to deliver against the Giants in Canberra, Hawthorn showed its credentials with new soldiers playing the same intimidating football, Swans reminded Carlton how much work they have to do, Dockers were disappointing again and lost to a Ablett non-dependent Suns outfit. I understand that after last week’s loss to the Dogs, Coach Lyon had the Freo players belting each other with boxing gloves while Doggies were singing the Club song, what does Ross do this week to get the boys up for the Derby? Speaking of Doggies they showed that pace and class will beat a team with a 300 game champion, Adelaide proved Port’s game plan needs more than a tweak, Bombers disrespected the Dees after they were disrespected and taken for granted, also far too quick for the plodding Dees and Collingwood showed Tiger Fans a week is a long time in football.

Can’t wait for next week’s rounds.

  1. Daniel Flesch says

    Dear Almanac Admin ,
Strange you couldn’t catch the C’wood vs. Richmond game on Ch.7 last Friday night. Here in rural Northern NSW it was live on Ch.63 / 7 mate . My gripe is they didn’t show West Coast vs. Hawthorn on Sunday arvo . However i understand why they instead had Sydney vs.Carlton preceded by GWS vs. Geelong as the AwFL attempts to get more NSW people interested in the game. Overall , i think the Ch. 7 coverage of AFL games in NSW is pretty reasonable considering. When the games i’m interested in aren’t live on tv i listen to the radio broadcast via the AFL website . Even a choice of four stations there. ( No way i’ll pay Rupert and Telstra as much as a bent penny despite their showing every match live)

  2. Appears Sydney market is for GWS and Swans games only, believe me I searched all channels available on the TV looking for the games. Perhaps your signal was picking up Prime and not 7, I see there is different programming for regional and City, go figure. As we know, if you love the AFL, watching just your team is not enough.
