Almanac Trivia: Citrus Bob’s Knackers Trivia Quiz
This is the time of the year when, unless you’re are a horse racing fan, you hibernate after the footy or are linseed oiling before the Test matches commence. The time to put on your thinking cap for the KNACKERS TRIVIA QUIZ.
Your score will not coincide with being a sports trivia genius because as you know there is a thing called Google which normally would give you all the answers but this quiz is going to make it a little harder. See how quick you can answer and email back.
The quiz might be Victorian centric but isn’t all sport?
- I wore my original guernsey in the1958 VFL Grand Final. Who am I and please explain?
- Neil Harvey, Lindsay Hassett and Paul Sheahan have one thing in common?
- “Each morning I looked in the mirror and saw the best sportsman in Australia” Who said that?
- Richie Benaud had two wives, what did they have in common (don’t state the obvious!)?
- Johnny Douglas was Captain of England when they beat Australia 4-1 in 1911. He had an unusual nickname?
- St Kilda one week Hawthorn the next?
- Cricketers Algy Gehrs (SA), Sam Loxton, Neil Hawke and Max Walker have three things in common?
- Boxer Lionel Rose, footballer Peter McKenna and cricketer Brett Lee dabbled in what?
- Legendary boxing trainer I also played VFL football?
- Australian Handball champion who played with the Pies?
- My mother coached Australia in Netball and I played 177 games of AFL. Who are we?
- I am the only Australia to take 10 wickets (11/66) and make a hundred in a Test Match?
- Who didn’t win the Brownlow Medal (a bit tricky but then again you are experts)?
- Name the two players who would have won the Brownlow Medal in 2022 given today’s suspension criteria?
GOOD LUCK!

About Bob Utber
At 86 years of age Citrus Bob is doing what he has always done since growing up on a small farm at Lang Lang. Talking, watching and writing sport and in recent years writing books. He lives in Mildura with his very considerate wife (Jenny) and a groodle named 'Chloe on Flinders' and can be found at Deakin 27 every day.

4. Floral names – Daphne & Lavender.
5. JWHT Douglas – Johnny Won’t Hit Today – because of his defensive batting approach.
7. All played league football – Gehrs (SANFL); Loxton (VFL); Hawke (WAFL/SANFL); Walker (VFL).
8. Singing.
9. Johnny Famechon’s trainer Ambrose Palmer played 83 games for Footscray in a career disrupted by WW2 and his fight commitments (he won Australian titles in 3 weight divisions).
11. Fraser Brown (Carlton) and his mother Joyce Brown.
13. VFL players 1987 – 1923. Brownlow Medal was established in 1924. As always SA led the way with the Magarey Medal established in 1898.
14. Chris Grant (Footscray) and Corey McKernan (North Melbourne) both got one game suspensions that would not apply with an early guilty plea today.
(I assume only Victorians are eligible to win the CB Utber Memorial Medal).
3. Laurie Nash
1. Can’t name a particular player, but 1958 GF saw most players wearing “different” numbers as the list of numbers, which the then VFL considered to be copyright, had been published the preceding week
6. Russell Greene in 1980.
7. All had 3 initials – D.R.A.Gehrs, S.J.E.Loxton, N.J.N.Hawke, M.H.N.Walker.
PeterB is correct on 4,5, 8, 9 & 11, and probably also 14 though I’m not sure there isn’t a trick in the question..
DB is right on no. 3.
13 is too cryptic to answer, though PeterB might be right.
Of the rest:
2. All played for Victoria, though I suspect there is a more obscure answer than that.
10. Brian Beers
11. Betty Wilson
So, with qualifications on my answers to 2,13 & 14, that’s an attempt at every question. How’d I do Citrus Bob?
PB – great start out of the blocks but found wanting in the strait although answers might have been missed
DB – yes 100% but only answered one question. Not a friend of DGB was Laurie!
TrevorM – On 7 only 33% 2 more answers required. 13 & 14 are not cryptic but require more thinking!
10 A good pick but Brian Beers was an excellent tennis player not handball.
The prize is still open as , like Jim’s Budget, needs to be absolutely spot on!
Citrus
1. Ray Gabbo . VFL changed numbers as the papers were going to print them and it was seen as a threat to Record sales . Couldnt’ find a big enough jumper to fit Gabbo in the few days allowed .
2. This is a guess ,all were school teachers
3 .Laurie Nash
4 .Floral Names
5. JWT Johny wont hit today
6. Russell Greene
7. Footballers
8. Dabbled in off key singing
9. Ambrose Palmer
10 .Bill Serong
11. Browns
12 .Alan Davidson took 11 wickets and made 120 runs in a test match [80 and 40 ]
13 Charles Brownlow didnt win the Brownlow
14. Grant [dont get me going on that ] and McKernan
HK – I guess that fine opening batter(Peter B?) from sandgroper land gave the following knackers a good lead.
“PLEASE EXPLAIN PH” is needed for question 7. Read the question again!
Wrong answers for 2,12 & 13.
Thanks for competing.
Love this – like correcting essays at Uni.
THE CATS ARE BACK IN TOWN!
HK – without decrying your knowledge that fine batter from WA Peter B got the knackers of to a flying start but missed out on a few bumpers.
Your answers are wrong with 2, 12 and 13. To help with 2 only Sheahan was a teacher.
Question 7 requires more than your answer – Read the question again. Q 13 needs some thinking outside the square or 50 metre arc.
Love being back in the school room and even loving it more that no one has succeeded in reaching the total score.
THE CATS ARE BACK IN TOWN!
A distant memory has just stirred on # 10, which I see Hayden has gotten also – Bill Serong.
#7, all played test cricket and all represented their state at Aussie Rules (plus my first answer re 3 initials)
#13 is it Jobe Watson?
No further clues on 14 I’m afraid.
TREVORM – For confidentiality information has been forwarded by SS Security to Trevor. Still time for others to contemplate their ability as Sports Ghuru’s.
As the late Scotty Palmer said “Keep on punchin’ “
Citrus,
Have you made a crucial typo?
Sorry MV – still living in the euphoria of the Grand Final win – “please explain” or are you trying to ace me with one of your underarm service returns?
Just looking back on this ancient quiz I realise that my answer to question 13 was not explained correctly. The (my) answer has always been and will continue. Sam Mitchell (Haw) and Trent Cotchin (Rich) were given Brownlow Medals. In my humble opinion JOBE WATSON was/is still the winner.
Hope 2023 and 24 are good years for you if you barrack for Collingwood and Brisbane.
