Almanac Teams: Surprise Sharpshooters (Part 3)

 

This is part three, the last of my series on surprise sharpshooters.

 

This edition features those who were virtually one or possibly two game wonders who played less than 50 games. There are a couple of exceptions like Adrian McAdam who I thought people would be expecting to see in here. If missed anyone let me know, some I considered but left out due to length, but some I may have simply forgotten. Hope you enjoy reading as much as I have researching.

 

 

 

Jon Ballantyne

5 Goals v Richmond Round 15 1993

Footscray 10.18.78 defeated Richmond 8.14.62

29 Games, 46 Goals 1990-95

Ballantyne was considered the second full forward option after Danny Del-Re. At the Bulldogs the most Ballantyne played in a row was five games, with seven games the most in a year. He only kicked 16 goals in a year at his best, but did lead the goal kicking tally in the Reserves in 1990 with 64 goals and 1992 with 79 goals. In his nine games at Collingwood Ballantyne played at full back before he injured his knee.

 

 

Wayne Beddison

Beddison was 21 year old from Dimboola who played the first five games in 1983 for eight goals. He would be recalled in Round 12 with Merrett and Van Der Haar unavailable and kicked six goals sharing the forward line with Terry Daniher who kicked five. Beddison would return to Dimboola at the end of 1983 due to homesickness.

 

 

Bryan Beinke

5 Goals v Collingwood Round 17 2000

Adelaide 22.15.147 defeated Collingwood 16.13.109

38 Games, 42 Goals 1999-2002

Beinke was originally drafted by Geelong and North Melbourne before Adelaide drafted him as a 23 year old in 1998. Beinke first and last season was when he played the most games in a year with 11. Beinke kicked 12 goals from seven games in 2000. After his five goals Beinke would miss the next four weeks with an injury.

 

 

Tim Boyle

5 Goals v Port Adelaide Round 10 2007

Hawthorn 17.7.109 defeated Port Adelaide 10.15.75

31 Games 39 Goals 2005-08

Boyle was an injury plagued tall who coming into 2007 having played five games in two years for one goal. Boyle played 20 games in 2007 in a tall forward line that included Lance Franklin and Jarryd Roughead. In his 20 games Boyle kicked 32 goals. Boyle played six games in 2009 before injuring his ACL and then retiring at end of the year aged 24.

 

 

Todd Breman

5 Goals v West Coast Round 21 1992

West Coast 15.14.104 defeated Richmond 12.12.84

48 Games, 39 Goals 1989-93

Breman was traded to Richmond with Stevan Jackson after 23 Games at the West Coast Eagles. Breman could play either end and was a beautiful long kick of the football. Breman when playing forward was a lead out forward at 183cm. Breman kicked 19 goals in 1992 from 19 games having a day out against his old club kicking 5.3 from nine kicks. After six games in 1993 Breman returned to WA. Breman kicked 111 goals for Subiaco in 1987.

 

 

Mark Buckley

6 Goals v Richmond Round 1 1983

Carlton 20.16.136 defeated Richmond 11.10.76

38 Games, 41 Goals 1982-87

Mark’s father Brian and brother Stephen all played at Carlton. Buckley’s day out came in his fifth game at full forward with Ross Ditchburn out injured in the opening round of 1983. Buckley played 20 games for 29 goals in 1983 but only played three more games for Carlton in two seasons before he moved to St Kilda and then Brisbane.

 

 

John Butcher

6 Goals v Western Bulldogs Round 22 2011

Western Bulldogs 24.13.157 defeated Port Adelaide 15.7.97

31 Games, 41 Goals 2011-16

Butcher was a top ten draft pick for Port Adelaide but never played more than eight games in one year with 11 goals the most in a year. Butcher kicked six goals in his second ever game from six kicks. In this match Jason Tutt on debut for the Bulldogs kicked three goals from his first three goals.

 

 

Kevin Caton

4 Goals v Richmond Round 1 1990

Brisbane 19.19.133 defeated Richmond 10.14.74

18 Games, 18 Goals 1988-90

Caton played for three clubs in three years , one game at West Coast, nine games at Fitzroy and eight at Brisbane. Caton best year was 1990 at Brisbane with nine goals. Caton would kick 4.5 on this day, kicking 9.17 for the year.

 

 

Dean Chiron

37 Games, 21 Goals 1983-89

Chiron is best known as a tagger at Melbourne where in one match when playing on John Platten he was cleaned up by Dermott Brereton at the centre bounce. Chiron though started his career as a forward at St Kilda and after 15 games for 12 goals. In this match Chiron kicked six goals from seven kicks while Lockett also kicked six. After 19 games in two years, Chiron had one year at the Bulldogs for one game before playing 17 games in three years at Melbourne.

 

 

Ross Christensen

5 Goals v Hawthorn Round 13 1982

Footscray 16.11.107 defeated Hawthorn 12.20.92

12 Games, 19 Goals 1982-83

Christensen kicked five goals in his second game in 1982 . This was a huge upset as Hawthorn were third on the ladder and Footscray were on the bottom with just one win. The match was just Ian Hampshire second game as coach. At three quarter time Footscray were 33 points behind but would kick 8.3 to 0.3 to win by 15 points with Christensen kicking two in the last. Christensen played 9 games in 1982 for 15 goals with three goals the only other multiple goals he kicked. After playing the opening round in 1983 Christensen crossed mid-year to Geelong but would only play two more games.

 

 

Darren Collins

5 Goals v St Kilda Round 11 1989

Footscray 9.8.62 defeated St Kilda 7.12.54

49 Games, 68 Goals 1985-90

A small forward pocket Collins started his career at Collingwood where in 1985 he had best goalkicking season with 24 goals from 15 games. Collins was traded to Footscray in1987 where he played just one game. In 1988 he kicked 20 goals, with his best day against the Saints in wet conditions at VFL Park where he kicked five goals from six kicks earning himself a Brownlow vote. After 24 games and 37 goals in three years at Footscray, Collins would move to Fitzroy for four games and three goals.

 

 

Jai Culley

4 Goals v Port Adelaide Round 6 2023

Port Adelaide 16.13.109 defeated West Coast 10.9.69.

12 Games, 7 Goals 2022-

Culley was West Coast’s major goal kicker in this match where he earned a Rising Star nomination. Unfortunately, Culley ruptured his ACL two weeks later and then only played three games in 2024 before he was delisted. Culley had been the Number 1 draft selection in the 2022 mid-season draft and in 2025 was picked up by Melbourne.

 

 

Noah Cumberland

5 Goals v Brisbane Round 20 2022

Richmond 15.14.104 defeated Brisbane 14.13.97

25 Games, 33 Goals 2022-24

Cumberland debut game was a late inclusion as an unused sub. Cumberland would wait 6 weeks before he came back in and got some time on the ground. In Cumberland fifth match he kicked Richmond’s first three goals, though Brisbane were 36 points in front. Richmond would kick nine goals to three in the second half. Cumberland kicked 19 goals from nine games in 2022 which was his best season.

 

 

Darren Cuthbertson

7 Goals v Collingwood Round 6 1991

Melbourne 17.11.113 defeated Collingwood 10.17.77

32 Goals, 43 Goals 1991-93

In 1991 Melbourne unveiled two enigmatic forwards in Allen Jakovich and Darren Cuthbertson. Jakovich played the first round before Cuthbertson came in for Round 2. In a three week period Cuthbertson kicked 19 goals between Round 5-7 including seven goals and some hangers against Collingwood on Anzac Day at Waverley. After his three game period Cuthbertson would play 26 Games for 20 goals with his best year 1991 kicking 29 goals from 16 games.

North Melbourne 12.17.89 defeated Footscray 10.9.69

29 Games, 18 Games 1993-97

Daniltchenko was 191cm who could play either end, he was forever a fringe player who was good leap and mark. Daniltchenko chances up forward were rare with Carey, McKernan, Crocker, Sholl and Roberts all regular forwards. Daniltchenko would play 13 games in 1996 for 16 goals which would be his best season. Daniltchenko would be delisted at the end of 1997 and drafted by Hawthorn but would suffer an ACL injury and not play a game.

27 Games, 32 Goals  2007-11

Dick was a speedy small forward who suffered several knee and shoulder injuries. Dick’s best year was in 2009 when he played 16 games for 22 goals. This match was a famous Queen’s Birthday clash when  Melbourne’s new hope Jack Watts played his first game and with his first touch was slammed into the turf by three Pies players. After 2009 Dick only played five games in two seasons due to injury.

 

 

Marcus Drum

4 Goals v Adelaide Round 16 2007

Fremantle 20.6.126 defeated Adelaide 15.11.101

22 Games, 6 Goals 2006-09

Drum was an intercept defender who was a  top ten draft pick in 2005 and is the nephew of Damian Drum. After five games in 2006 this was Drum’s first in 2007. This game was Mark Harvey first as coach of Fremantle and he started with Drum as a tagging forward on Andrew McLeod. Drum only played two more games in 2007 and injuries restricted him to 14 games in 2008-09 before being traded to Geelong. Drum never played a game at Geelong retiring in 2011 due to Achilles and hamstring injuries.

 

 

Dean Dugdale

5 Goals v Sydney Round 12 1982

North Melbourne 16.15.111 defeated Sydney 15.15.105

30 Games, 12 Goals 1981-85

Dean is the son of John Dugdale and brother of Glen. Dean was 178cm, 15cm smaller than Glen. Dean best year was 1982 where he played 13 games for 9 goals. Dugdale in this match kicked four goals in the first half. After 1982 Dugdale played 12 games in three seasons for one goal.

 

 

Anthony Dwyer

4 Goals v Richmond Round 2 1992

North Melbourne 19.17.131 defeated Richmond 9.11.65

30 Games, 27 Goals 1990-96

Dwyer is similar to Dugdale in that his father Laurie played at North Melbourne as did his older brother David. Dwyer played two games in 1990 but none in 1991. Dwyer was picked for North Melbourne first game in 1992 (Round 2) and playing half forward he kicked four goals. 1992 was Dwyer best season with 16 games and 21 goals. Dwyer would play only 12 games in next four years for six goals.

 

 

Shane Fell

6 Goals v Geelong Round 8 1990

15 Games, 30 Goals 1990

Fell was initially drafted by Geelong before being traded to Sydney as a pre-draft selection. Fell had kicked 114 goals for Glenorchy in the Tasmania Football League in 1989. Fell was a small full forward at 186cm and aged 22 when he debut. Fell kicked five goals on debut and between Round 5-8 he kicked 17 goals. However, from Round 10 he kicked just five goals from six games and was delisted at the end of the year.

Sydney 21.8.134 defeated St Kilda 15.10.100

18 Games, 23 Goals 2000-02

Fitzgerald was drafted with Pick 4 in 1998 and with Tony Lockett retiring the previous year, Fitzgerald was given first crack at Full Forward in 2000 and kicked five goals on debut. Fitzgerald played ten games in the first 12 of 2000 before getting injured, kicking 15 goals. Fitzgerald did not play in 2001 and was traded to Adelaide for 2002 where he played eight games for eight goals before another knee reconstruction forced an early retirement.

 

 

Dale Fleming

5 Goals v Sydney Round 16 1992

Fitzroy 21.10.136 defeated Sydney 11.17.83

13 Games, 15 Goals 1992-93

Fleming started his career at Hawthorn reserves before been picked up by Fitzroy. Fleming played 11 games in 1992 including the last ten. In this match Fleming started on the bench and came in just before half time to kick his five goals. Fleming kicked 14 goals in 1992 including 11 goals in three weeks but played only two games in 1993.

 

 

Dan Foley

5 Goals v Essendon Round 18 1983

Richmond 19.10.114 defeated Essendon 6.14.50

13 Games, 9 Goals 1983-85

Foley in his fourth game at Centre Half Forward combined with Michael Roach at Full Forward to both kick five goals to thump eventually Grand Finalist Essendon at Windy Hill. Foley though was restricted to 13 games with injuries playing just one game in 1984 and six games in 1985.

 

 

John Georgiades

8 Goals v Carlton Round 1 1989

Footscray 19.18.132 defeated Carlton 10.13.73

15 Games, 27 Goals 1989-91

Georgiades was 23 years old when lined up on half forward flank against Carlton in Round 1 1989. Georgiades kicked 8.4 with 22 disposals and earned himself three Brownlow votes. Two weeks later Georgiades kicked 5.3 against North Melbourne to again earn three Brownlow votes. After 15 goals in three weeks Georgiades would kick only four more goals in six games and was dropped after Round 7. Georgiades would play only three games for two goals in 1990 and after kicking four goals in his first match in 1991 he would play only two more games.

 

 

Nick Gill

5 Goals v Essendon Round 20 2008

Adelaide 19.15.129 defeated Essendon 10.13.73

17 Games, 21 Goals 2007-09
Gill was originally drafted by Melbourne in 2000 and North Melbourne in 2002 before being picked up by Adelaide in 2006. Gill played the last seven games in 2007 including the Elimination Final for nine goals. In 2008 Gill played Round 13-14 before coming back in for Round 17 playing once again seven in a row including the Elimination Final. Gill best haul of 5.3 all came in the second half.

 

 

Con Gorozidis

6 Goals v North Melbourne Round 18 1981

North Melbourne 16.21.117 defeated St Kilda 12.13.85

34 Games, 74 Goals 1980-83

Gorozidis was an exciting half forward who debut with one game in 1980. Gorozidis next match would be against reigning premier Richmond in Round 9, and he would kick 5.2, the following week he kicked 1.7 against Hawthorn. Gorozidis would play the last 14 games of 1981 and win the goalkicking at St Kilda with 34 goals. Gorozidis best haul was 6.3 against North Melbourne from nine kicks. In 1982 Gorozidis kicked 29 goals from 14 games before moving to Footscray in 1983 where he played five games for ten goals.

 

 

Chris Groom

5 Goals v Collingwood Round 8 1995

Collingwood 20.11.131 defeated Fremantle 14.9.93

24 Games, 27 Goals 1993-98

Groom status as a Fremantle player is not looked only fondly, sadly as he was the player that was traded from Adelaide for Andrew McLeod. Groom played 12 games in two seasons at Adelaide for eight goals at Adelaide. Groom kicked three goals in Fremantle first ever match before missing six matches with injury. On his return Groom kicked five goals against Collingwood at Centre Half Forward and followed up with another three the week after. Groom played seven games at Fremantle for 18 goals in 1995 but did not play a game in 1996 and was traded to North Melbourne for 1997-98 for five games and one goal.

 

 

Shane Harvey

4 Goals v Hawthorn Round 17 2004

North Melbourne 22.11.143 defeated Hawthorn 9.9.63

14 Games, 13 Goals 2002-04

Brother of Brent, Shane played 11 games for Essendon in two seasons for nine goals which included two hauls of three. Harvey only played three games at North Melbourne and against Hawthorn Shane kicked 4.3 from 15 kicks while Brent had just seven disposals kicking one goal.

38 Games, 24 Goals 1996-99

With Stewart Loewe out and Jason Heatley injured early, St Kilda threw 189cm wing Daniel Healy up forward against the Eagles at Subiaco. Healy was the surprise packet with six goals alongside Peter Everitt who also kicked six. After this match the most Healy kicked was two goals with 14 in 1998 his most in a season.

Adelaide 24.25.169 defeated Geelong 11.12.78

38 Games, 100 Goals 1991-93 and 1996

Hodges was not a one hit wonder, but I have added in him to show that he was unlucky to play just 38 games. Hodges won the 1990 Magarey Medal for kicking 153 goals for Port Adelaide. Hodges had a lot of high expectations in 1991 and kicked 30 goals from 13 games. 1992 was his best season kicking 48 goals from 13 games. By 1993 Hodges was squeezed out with the arrival of Modra and with both similar size and both full forwards only, there was no room for both. Hodges kicked 19 goals from 13 goals before going back to Port Adelade. Hodges did kick six or more goals six times and in the SANFL he kicked 671 goals from 167 games.

 

 

Don Holmes

23 Games, 40 Goals 1987-89

Holmes was an inaugural Eagle debuting at 28 years of age. Holmes best season was 1987 with 13 games for 29 goals. Holmes would play just ten games between 1988-89 for 11 goals. Holmes played 158 games for Swan Districts for 323 goals.

Sydney 12.13.85 defeated Collingwood 11.15.81

19 Games, 15 Goals 1987-90

Hrysoulakis debuted in 1987 in defence playing nine games but did not play a game in 1988. Hrysoulakis played in Round 2 but was dropped and did not reappear until Round 16 where he was played as a forward. In his third game as a forward he would kick five goals against the Swans, though two weeks later he kicked 1.6 against Fitzroy. 1989 was Hrysoulakis best season with eight games and 14 goals including a goal in a final. Hrysoulakis would play two games in 1990 before being delisted.

16 Games, 23 Goals 2006-08

Hughes was a tall forward who struggled for opportunity who was eventually squeezed out by Jack Riewoldt as a forward. Hughes best year was 2008 where he kicked 12 goals from six games. His match winning six was against Port Adelaide in Adelaide included three goals in the third quarter.

Geelong 37.17.239 defeated Brisbane 11.9.75

36 Games, 79 Goals 1992-95

Hutton AFL career is a remarkable short lived one for the 1991 Number 1 draft pick. Hutton was 25 when he debut for Brisbane as an undersized full forward at 185cm who wore a helmet. In just his sixth game he kicked eight goals in a match which is best known for it being the highest score in the AFL. Hutton would kick eight goals again in Round 23 at Brisbane last ever match at Carrara. Despite kicking 43 goals from 18 games Hutton was delisted at the end of 1992. Hutton played for Sydney in 1993 playing five games for nine goals and then in 1995 Hutton was on Fremantle inaugural list kicking 27 goals from 13 games before being delisted at the end of 1995.

 

 

Luke Jericho

5 Goals v Richmond Round 11 2008

Adelaide 22.14.146 defeated Richmond 14.12.96

33 Games, 31 Goals 2004-08

Jericho kicked four goals in fifteen minutes in the third quarter to give Adelaide a 40 point turnaround. Jericho would though only play three more games for three goals before being delisted at the end of 2008. Jericho best year was 2005 playing 15 games for 10 goals.

 

 

Lewis Johnston

6 Goals v Adelaide Round 22 2013

10 Games, 16 Goals 2011-14

Johnston was a key forward who finished 2012 strongly playing the last five games of the year for eleven goals. Johnston kicked the last goal of the third quarter and then four goals in the last quarter. Johnston played two games for Sydney in 2011 before playing eight games at Adelaide.

 

 

Steven Jurica

5 Goals v Essendon Round 15 2001

18 Games, 25 Goals 1995-97

Jurica got his opportunities up forward for Richmond when Matthew Richardson and Stuart Edwards went down with injury. In his fourth game Jurica kicked four goals on Stephen Silvagni. The next week was a Friday night classic and Jurica kicked 5.3 from eight kicks. Jurica would kick 21 goals from 13 games in 1995 but would struggle from then on to play five games for four goals in the next two years.

 

 

Terry Keays

7 Goals v Footscray Round 7 1991

45 Games, 40 Goals 1987-92

Keays debut at Collingwood as a 16 year old and played 20 games for 14 goals in four years before being traded to Richmond for Pick 4. At Richmond Keays started as a defender before having a two week purple patch where he kicked five goals against Fitzroy and then the next week seven against Footscray. Keays would kick 27 goals in 1991 but played only nine games for two goals in 1992 and was delisted at the end of the year.

Carlton 29.17.191 defeated West Coast 15.14.104

36 Games, 38 Goals 1987-90

Keene was an athletic ruckman with a booming left foot that sadly we never saw the best of due to injuries. Keene was 26 years old when he debuted for the Eagles in their first ever game and would kick the Eagles first ever goal. Keene six goals came when he was changing in the ruck with Alex Ishchenko who also kicked a goal. Keene played 17 games in 1987 for 25 goals. Keene would play 12 games in 1988 and the first two games in 1989. In 1990 Keene was bought in for Round 22 his first game since Round 2 1989 and had immediate impact. Keene played all four finals in 1990 kicking four goals and was best on ground in the semifinal win against Melbourne and West Coast best in the Qualifying final replay. Keene was on West Coast list for 1991-92 but never played a game due to foot and heel injuries.

 

 

Julian Kirzner

4 Goals v Port Adelaide Round 8 1997

North Melbourne 19.14,128 defeated Port Adelaide 15.10.100

4 Games 6 Goals 1994 and 1997

Kirzner played one game for Essendon in 1994 and then was on Carlton supplementary list in 1996 before being picked up by North Melbourne in 1997 on their rookie list. Kirzner got an opportunity with Carey and Longmire out and he kicked 4.3 on debut for North Melbourne. Kirzner would play two more games for one goal.

 

 

Matthew Kluzek

5 Goals v West Coast Round 17 1994

Adelaide 12.10.82 defeated West Coast 11.12.78

24 Games, 15 Goals 1994-96

This was Kluzek third game, with the first two games he played as a small defender. Kluzek kicked 5.2 on Chris Waterman but would only play four more games for the year for two goals. Kluzek would play 17 games in the next two years for seven goals.

 

 

Mark Lisle

6 Goals v Melbourne Round 5 1984

North Melbourne 16.17.113 defeated Melbourne 14.14.98

37 games, 14 Goals 1984-89

This was Lisle third ever game where he would play Full Forward changing ruck with Stephen McCann. In Lisle first year he played eleven games for eleven goals. In the next five years Lisle played 26 games for two goals as he spent more time in the ruck.

 

 

Richard Lounder

4 Goals v North Melbourne Round 5 1989

4 Games, 5 Goals 1989

Lounder was the Number 1 draft pick for Richmond in 1987 and arrived at the club in 1989. On debut Lounder kicked four with his first four kicks. Lounder would play the next three weeks to finish with nine kicks in total for five goals.

28 Games, 72 Goals 1979-81

Loveless played two games in 1979, in his fourth career game against Carlton in Round 3 1980 Loveless kicked three goals but got himself and his opponent Bruce Doull reported for striking each other. Both Loveless and Doull were suspended for two weeks. Loveless kicked 44 goals in 1980 including two bags of eight and a bag of seven. Loveless played ten games in 1981 for 15 goals but would spend 1982 in the reserves with the arrival of Simon Beasley. Loveless went to Tasmania in 1983 and kept playing football until he was 46 kicking 2000 goals for 16 clubs including over 100 seven times.

 

 

Tony Lynn

33 Games, 19 Goals 1988 and 1994-96

Lynn played six games at Brisbane for five goals including four goals in his third match. Lynn four goals were all in the second half as he didn’t come onto the ground until halfway through the third quarter. Lynn was delisted and played for Central District from 1989-93 winning a Fos Williams medal for South Australia against Western Australia and was one of the best players for Queensland against Victoria B side. Lynn performance got him drafted by Carlton where he played 27 games in three years including 20 in 1994.

 

 

Beau Maister

Maister started his career as a defender for the Eagles in 2008, playing 27 games in three seasons kicking one goal. At St Kilda Maister played as a swingman with the match against Melbourne, Maister was moved forward when Nick Riewoldt went off injured. 2012 would be Maister best years kicking 15 goals from ten games.

McAdam had more than one big haul in him, but I think most people would be expecting him here. McAdam was named emergency before coming in for his first game with Darren Crocker a late withdrawal due to injury. McAdam kicked 7.2 from ten kicks, the next week against Sydney McAdam kicked 10.6 against Sydney while John Longmire kicked 9. McAdam had kicked 38 goals by his sixth game after kicking nine goals against Collingwood in his sixth game. McAdam reached his 50th goal in his tenth game and ended up with 68 goals for the year from 17 games. McAdam played 18 games in 1994 for 22 goals  with five goals his best and then just one game in 1995 before being traded to Collingwood in 1996 where he did not play a game.

 

 

Jim McAllester

7 Goals v Sydney Round 14 1984

36 Games, 22 Goals 1980-84

McAllester started at Essendon playing two games in 1980 for zero disposals. McAllester then had two years at Footscray for 24 games and 4 goals. After one year at East Ballarat McAllester joined Collingwood in 1984 and got his chance at Full forward with Dale Woodhall omitted. McAllester would kick 18 goals from 10 games but would only play two more games with injuries ruling him out for the finals in 1984.

 

 

Matthew McCarthy

5 Goals v Carlton Round 14 2006

Geelong 23.4.142 defeated Carlton 11.11.77

22 Games, 24 Goals 2003-06

McCarthy was Geelong long term hope to be a tall forward and he played 13 games for 15 goals in his first season. McCarthy would play only five games in 2004-05 and his first appearance in 2006 was not until Round 14. McCarthy would kick five goals against Carlton but would only play three more games for one goal.

 

 

David McGlashan

6 Games, 7 Goals 1981-82

McGlashan played three games for one goal in 1981 and then played Round 4 1982 and was dropped the week after. McGlashan was bought in for Round 10 against Collingwood as Mark Jackson was suspended and he would kick six goals in Tom Hafey last game as Collingwood coach. McGlashan was dropped though for Round 11 with Jackson available. McGlashan would return in Round 12 but would not kick a goal and would not play another game.

 

 

Martin McGrath

4 Games 6 Goals 2003

McGrath was a livewire small forward with a big leap who had a night out on debut. McGrath was part of a small forward that kicked ten goals against the Bulldogs with McGrath five, Andrew Krakouer three, and David Rodan two. McGrath would play the next three weeks for one goal.

 

 

Steve McLuckie

4 Goals v Collingwood Round 2 1992

Collingwood 23.16.154 defeated Brisbane 13.10.88

20 Games, 8 Goals 1992-93

McLuckie kicked four goals on debut against Collingwood at Victoria Park, which included two in the first quarter where Brisbane led by 10 points at quarter time. McLuckie would play 13 games in 1992 for eight goals and a further seven games in 1993.

 

 

Anthony Mellington

6 Goals v Fremantle Round 8 1996

Fitzroy 16.11.107 defeated Fremantle 10.16.76

44 Games, 43 Goals 1995-99

Mellington was drafted by Fitzroy in the 1995 preseason draft and would play six games for two goals. In 1996 after four games Mellington would be moved to Full forward and in Round 8 against Fremantle he would kick six goals in Fitzroy’s last ever win, earning himself two Brownlow medal votes. Mellington played 18 games in 1996 for 22 goals with his next best haul 4 goals. Mellington would win Fitzroy leading goal kicker in 1996. Mellington would be drafted by North Melbourne and play 20 games for 19 goals at North Melbourne with five goals his best haul at North Melbourne.

 

 

Brad Moran

4 Goals v Carlton Round 18 2008

Adelaide 13.16.94 defeated Carlton 12.14.86

21 Games, 8 Goals 2006-11

Moran had a football career where he literally followed Wayne Carey footsteps. Moran played three games in two years at North Melbourne wearing the Number 18 jumper. In 2008 Moran was traded to Adelaide and wore Number 2 once again Wayne Carey’s former number. In his sixth game Moran kicked four goals, which were the first lot of goals he kicked. Three of Moran goals were in the third quarter. Moran played 18 games in three years at Adelaide with seven games the most he played in a season.

 

 

Michael Murphy

8 Goals v Sydney Round 8 1993

Brisbane 33.21.219 defeated Sydney 8.9.57

29 Games, 63 Goals 1988 and 1991-93

Murphy started his career at CHB and played three games for North Melbourne in 1988 before returning to Glenelg. Murphy was an inaugural Adelaide player and would play as a forward when selected in Round 6 kicking 18 goals in eight games including a bag of six. In 1992 Murphy played mainly as a defender kicking three goals from eight games. In 1993 Murphy played for Brisbane playing ten games for 22 goals including eight goals against the hapless Swans.

 

 

Allan Murray

St Kilda 17.16.118 defeated Hawthorn 14.6.90

16 Games, 13 Goals 2002-06

Murray played one game for Port Adelaide in 2002 before moving to St Kilda in 2003. In his first game at St Kilda Murray kicked four goals including one inside the first minute. 2003 was Murray best season playing seven games for nine goals. Murray would play eight games in three years at St Kilda after 2003.

 

 

Dean Notting

28 Games, 17 Goals 1985-87

Notting spent the whole of his career wearing number 58 and holds the games record for the Number 58 jumper. Notting played two games in 1985 and in his fourth game in 1986 he kicked five goals against St Kilda from a Half Forward Flank earning himself one Brownlow vote. Notting played 13 games for nine goals in 1986 and then 13 games for eight goals in 1987.

 

 

Cameron O’Brien

7 Goals v Sydney Round 7 1990

Brisbane 14.12.96 defeated Sydney 13.10.88

45 Games, 65 Goals 1985-91

O’Brien played one game for Collingwood in 1985 and joined Brisbane in 1987 where he struggled to put games together. O’Brien played 13 games in 1987 his most ever for eleven goals. O’Brien played 19 games between 1988-90 for 28 goals before kicking 26 goals from 12 games in 1991. O’Brien seven goals was his best haul.

 

 

Michael O’Connell

West Coast 14.20.104 defeated Geelong 11.17.83

20 Games, 13 Goals 1987-88

O’Connell could play either end and he kicked five goals  from ten games in 1987. O’Connell played forward in Round 1 against Geelong 1988, kicking five goals. O’Connell would play ten games as well in 1988 for eight goals. Michael’s brother David was at the Eagles at the time as a forward/ruck and played 48 games but never played one with Michael.

 

 

Darren Ogier

5 Goals v Footscray Round 15 1989

Sydney 16.21.117 defeated Footscray 10.17.77

23 Games, 34 Goals 1985-89

Ogier started his career at Carlton and played 13 games for 15 goals from 1985-87 and then two games at North Melbourne for three goals in 1988. Ogier played eight games at Sydney for 16 goals including nine goals in his last two ever matches. Ogier kicked 5.3 against Footscray and earned himself one Brownlow vote.

 

 

Justin Plapp

5 Goals v Carlton Round 15 1998

Richmond 20.12.132 defeated Carlton 11.4.70

44 Games, 30 Goals 1998-2002

Plapp started his career at Richmond on the rookie list and was a cult figure for his heroics in the 1997 Reserves premiership team. Plapp kicked three goals on debut and the next week on a Friday night Plapp kicked five goals against Carlton and earned himself a Brownlow vote. Plapp played ten games for eight goals in 1999 and was traded to St Kilda playing mainly across half back in 26 games in three years for eight goals.

 

 

Michael Reynolds

Melbourne 14.14.98 defeated St Kilda 11.15.81

22 Games, 20 Goals 1983-86

Reynolds in his fourth game was selected in the back pocket but ended up playing forward with Peter Moore a late withdrawal. Reynolds kicked 6.2 from eight kicks but would play six games for nine goals in 1983. Reynolds played ten games in 1984 and six in 1986 and would kick 11 more goals with his next best haul four goals.

 

 

Ian Rickman

6 Goals v North Melbourne Round 3 1984

Footscray 25.14.164 defeated North Melbourne 14.17.101

11 Games, 10 Goals 1982-84

Rickman played five games for zero goals in 1982-83 but when he was bought in for his first game in Round 3 1984 Rickman kicked 6.3 from nine kicks. Rickman played only five more matches for four goals before going to Williamstown where he twice won the leading goalkicker in the league. Footscray drafted Rickman again as a preseason pick in 1989 but he did not add to his games tally.

 

 

Ben Ronke

7 Goals v Hawthorn Round 8 2018

Sydney 12.7.79 defeated Hawthorn 10.11.71

44 Games, 39 Goals 2018-22

Ronke was a small forward who had a night out in his third game kicking seven goals and getting three Brownlow votes. Ronke kicked four goals in the first quarter and kicked the last goal to give the Swans an eight point win. Ronke kicked 24 goals from 18 games in 2018 which was his best year. Ronke struggled for regular games from 2019 playing 26 games in four seasons for 15 goals.

 

 

Tony Russell

6 Goals v Sydney Round 20 1983

Collingwood 28.14.182 defeated 18.12.120.

8 Games, 17 Goals 1982-84

Russell was one of many Collingwood Full Forward hopes in the early 1980’s. Recruited from country zone Hamilton, Russell kicked four goals on debut and seven from three games. In 1983 Russell came into the side in Round 20 to kick six goals against the Swans. Russell played two games in 1984 before crossing to Preston mid-year. Russell had a successful goalkicking career in the Hampden league kicking 1020 goals from 247 games.

 

 

Eddie Sansbury

5 Goals v Western Bulldogs Round 22 2007

North Melbourne 23.19.157 defeated Western Bulldogs 14.9.93.

40 Games, 21 Goals 2004-08

Sansbury was used as a small defender in his first three seasons playing 27 games for three goals. Mid 2007 Sansbury was moved to the forward line and kicked 14 goals from twelve games. Sansbury five goals were in the last round of 2007 where he kicked three goals in the last quarter. Sansbury would go goalless in North Melbourne three finals and played just one game in 2008.

 

 

Laurence Schache

6 Goals v Adelaide Round 14 1991

Adelaide 23.18.156 defeated Brisbane 13.12.90

29 Games, 64 Goals 1991-92

Schache was the Number 1 pick in the 1990 Mid-season draft and would debut in Round 4 1992. Schache went goalless in his first two games. Schache kicked 47 goals from 17 games with two hauls of five and his best of six goals was against Adelaide. Schache would play 12 games in 1992 for 17 goals.

Dannie Seow

25 Games, 10 Goals 1986-90

Seow was a cult figure for Collingwood who would debut as a key defender in 1986. In his twelfth game Seow was moved forward to provide a target in the second half with Taylor struggling. Seow would kick three more goals in the last two games of the year. Seow played just four games in 1987 before joining Melbourne in 1989 where he played seven games in two seasons  including kicking two goals in his first game there.

 

 

Jamie Shaw

5 Goals v Geelong Round 18 1987

Fitzroy 20.9.129 defeated Geelong 12.15.87

2 Games, 5 Goals 1987-88

Shaw was the leading goal kicker in the VFA for Preston with 145 goals. Shaw would kick 5.1 on debut from six kicks but would miss the next week injured. Shaw would play Round 1 1988 but did not kick a goal and was dropped and by mid-1988 he was back at Preston where he played 126 games for 673 goals.

 

 

Heath Shephard

5 Goals v Brisbane Round 3 1989

Collingwood 19.21.135 defeated Brisbane 11.9.75

15 Games, 17 Goals 1989-92

Shephard had a big impact on debut as a high flying small forward. Shephard had 18 kicks and kicked 5.5 on debut. 1989 was Shephard best year playing nine games for 14 goals. Shephard would play just two games in 1990 before being traded to Brisbane in 1992 where he played four games.

 

 

Russell Shields

5 Goals v Sydney Round 1 1988

Footscray 16.6.102 defeated Sydney 11.10.76

20 Games, 22 Goals 1983-84 and 1988

Shields started his career at Hawthorn playing 16 games in the 1983 premiership year where he was dropped after Round 22. After one game in 1984 Shields joined Central District in the SANFL from 1985-87. In the opening round of 1988 Shields lined up for Footscray where he kicked five goals and got two Brownlow votes. Shields would though play only two more games for two goals.

 

 

Sean Tasker

5 Goals v Sydney Round 15 1992

Adelaide 22.17.149 defeated Sydney 13.4.82

48 Games, 17 Goals 1991-96

Tasker was an inaugural Adelaide Crow who debut as a defender in Round 15 1991 and played the last nine games. In his 18th game in 1992 Tasker was sent forward against the Swans and responded with five goals. Tasker would kick two goals the week later but played defence for the last three matches. Tasker was in and out of the side from then on playing 21 games in three seasons for seven goals.

 

 

Peter Thorne

7 Goals v Footscray Round 9 1984

Melbourne 23.21.159 defeated Footscray 11.15.81

26 Games, 35 Goals 1978-79 and 1984

Thorne first stint at Melbourne resulted in 14 games and 18 goals from 1978-79. Thorne would move to East Perth and play there from 1980-83 before returning to Melbourne in 1984 aged 24. Thorne played 12 games for 17 goals in 1984 with a day out against Footscray kicking seven goals in the forward pocket while Kelvin Templeton kicked eight against his old team at Full forward. Thorne would move back to Perth in 1985 and play with Claremont.

 

 

Alan Thorpe

5 Goals v Adelaide Round 5 1994

Footscray 17.8.110 defeated Adelaide 13.15.93

15 Games, 28 Goals 1992-94

Thorpe spent time on Fitzroy, Sydney, Footscray, and Carlton lists but played seniors for just the Swans and Bulldogs. Thorpe played three games for five goals at Sydney in 1992. In 1993 he was selected as a mid-season draft pick by Footscray and played four games for four goals. In 1994 Thorpe played seven games in a row for 19 goals as a will o wisp half forward kicking 5.1 from six kicks against Adelaide and then four goals the next week against Brisbane.

 

 

Andrew Tranquilli

6 Goals v West Coast Round 13 1994

Collingwood 18.13.121 defeated West Coast 12.12.84.

12 Games, 20 Goals 1993-95

Tranquilli played one game in 1994 and Round 1 in 1994 before reappearing in Round 13 against West Coast at the MCG. On this day Tranquilli provided the forward goalkicking option with 6.2  as Rocca was well held. Tranquilli would play in eight of Collingwood last nine matches including an Elimination Final kicking eleven goals. In 1995 Tranquilli would play just one game.

 

 

Jason Tutt

4 Goals v Port Adelaide Round 22 2011

Western Bulldogs 24.13.157 defeated Port Adelaide 15.7.97

40 Games, 27 Goals 2011-16

Tutt debut in Round 22 2011 and kicked three goals from his first three kicks in the first seven minutes of the game.  Tutt kicked another in the third quarter to finish with four goals, from 18 kicks and one Brownlow vote. Tutt played 23 games in the next three years for 17 goals. In 2015 Tutt moved to Carlton and played 13 games the most he ever played in season for four goals but played just one game in 2016.

 

 

Troy Ugle

6 Goals v St Kilda Round 15 1990

West Coast 16.12.108 defeated St Kilda 14.6.90

43 Games, 43 Goals 1988-93

Ugle started his career as a small defender playing 14 games for four goals in his first two years. In 1990 Ugle played 18 games for 24 goals. In this match Ugle started on Craig Devonport who kicked five goals on him as the Saints kicked 9.3.57 to 2.1.13 in the first quarter. Ugle was shifted forward and kicked 6.1 from eight kicks as West Coast came from 28 points down at half time, 19 points three quarter time and won by 18 points. Ugle would be dropped after the drawn qualifying final and the next three seasons played just eleven games for 14 goals.

 

 

Jay Van Berlo

4 Goals v Western Bulldogs Round 5 2011

Fremantle 12.13.85 defeated Western Bulldogs 11.12.78.

32 Games, 10 Goals 2009-12

Van Berlo was a defender who played as forward against the Bulldogs in this match. Prior to the game Van Berlo had played 25 Games for six goals. Van Berlo kicked four goals in 30 minutes of football on this day. Van Berlo would play just four more matches in 2011 and then just two in 2012.

 

 

Robert Walters

7 Goals v Fitzroy Round 2 1980

Melbourne 22.8.140 defeated Fitzroy 17.14.116

25 Games, 46 Goals 1977-81

Walters best year was 1979 where he kicked 22 goals from twelve games. Walters could play either end and in Round 18 he kicked nine goals including six in the second quarter a week after Melbourne had lost to Fitzroy by 190 points. In 1980 Walters kicked seven goals against Fitzroy and would kick 18 goals from eight games. Walters only played one game in 1982 before joining Collingwood in 1983 where he did not play a game.

 

 

Mark Weideman

5 Goals v Melbourne Round 1 1983

Collingwood 20.15.135 defeated Melbourne 19.11.125

28 Games, 34 Goals 1981-84

Mark is the son of Collingwood legend Murray he debut in 1981 as a 19 year old key forward. Weideman played under great pressure because of his surname and had a great first year playing 20 games including two finals for 23 goals. Weideman though was dropped for the Grand Final for captain Peter Moore who was returning from injury. Injuries restricted Weideman to two games in 1982 but things were encouraging with five a goal haul from six kicks in Round 1 1983. Injuries and form restricted Weideman to just four more games in 1983 and one game in 1984 before he joined Essendon where he did not play a game.

Rohan Welsh

6 Goals v Fitzroy Round 14 1992

Fitzroy 20.13.133 defeated Carlton 17.12.114

42 Games, 59 Goals 1992-97

Welsh was originally on Essendon list, but he did not play a game. Welsh played for Dandenong in 1991 where he won the goalkicking with 84 goals and had several marks of the year contenders. Welsh was picked by Carlton in the preseason draft in 1992 and would debut in Round 5 1992. Welsh played a lot as a third tall forward to Kernahan and Spalding and second ruck because of his leap despite being only 189cm.  Welsh six goals featured in a match Carlton lost but Welsh stepped up as Kernahan and Spalding were kept to three goals between them. Welsh kicked 28 goals from 14 games in 1992 and then 22 goals from 16 games in 1993 where he played in the Grand Final. Injuries meant Welsh did not play a game in 1994-95 but he would play twelve games for nine goals between 1996-97.

Jim West

37 Games, 54 Goals 1990-92

West was recruited from Norwood and had he best season in his first season where he 34 goals playing every game and was the wans leading goalkicker. West best game was against Geelong at Geelong where he kicked five goals in a two point win. West though would struggle the next two years playing 15 games for 20 goals.

 

Troy Wilson

7 Goals v St Kilda Round 3 2001

West Coast 19.11.125 defeated St Kilda 16.11.107

37 Games, 83 Goals 2001-03

Wilson was a mature aged recruit for West Coast making his debut at the 29 and would play 18 games in 2001 for 40 goals. Wilson best game was his third game against St Kilda where he kicked 7.5  and received three Brownlow votes, in a match he kicked five goals before half time. In 2002 Wilson kicked 20 goals in his first four matches but played just 14 games including a final for 38 goals with a collarbone injury hindering his year. Wilson played five games for five goals in 2003 and was delisted at the end of the year.

 

Jason Wood

7 Games, 5 Goals 1998

Wood was a midfielder/half forward who in his fourth game kicked four goals including the one that put the Cats in front. Wood would play the three remaining games for 1998 for one goal. Wood did not play a game in 1999 and was recruited by the Western Bulldogs in 2000 on their rookie list but did not play a game.

 

Dale Woodhall

7 Goals v Sydney Round 4 1984

Sydney 17.4.106 defeated Collingwood 15.13.103

12 Games, 32 Goals 1984

Woodhall was Collingwood 1984 goalkicking hope from Queensland and despite being 183cm he would play at Full Forward. The previous year at Mayne Woodhall kicked 113 goals. Woodhall kicked seven goals in his third game at Victoria Park in a three point loss. In his 12 games Woodhall kicked two or more goals ten times, but he did not play another game after Round 19 and in 1985 he would join Collingwood coach John Cahill at West Adelaide.
