Almanac Teams: Players in a Grand Final with less than 20 Games

Comments

  1. Cameron Mooney And Bruce Monteath are in a unique club having no impact but collecting a Premiership medal.
Monteath was Richmond Captain in 1980 and came off the bench with 10 minutes to go and Tigers already celebrating the win. Not sure if he had a possession or not but he got to hold the cup aloft.
Some players are in the right spot at the right time. Clark Keating always seemed to bob up in September.

  2. Ta Rodney, some interesting names there. I need to think long and hard about the decade prior.

Two that come to mind are Barry Mulcair in Carlton’s 1970 victory, also Noel Carter in Richmond’s 1973 win. There maybe others but I’l have to check

Re the forthcoming runners up I can recall a few chaps who played in the decade prior. One had played a handful of games before his grand final appearance. He stayed around for a few more seasons, appearing with different clubs. I used to see him in the earlier part of this century at our local TAB. He was still working as a painter.

Another chap debuted in a 2nd semi final and kicked a few in his teams victory. A fortnight later his team got whupped, he kicked zip, and his career was over.

    Glen!

  3. Thanks Dan, Monteath had 3 disposals. He will feature in a side in a few weeks.

Thanks Glen, the debut in the semi final is that Michael Cooke.

  4. Good job Rodney.

Vin Cattogio was one of the two players I was alluding to, the other was Michael Cooke.

There were a few players who had just got past the 20 game mark. ‘Dipper’ in 1978, the Carlton pairing of David Dickson in 1972, then Michael Young in 1979, are a few who come to mind.

Steven Hywood’s 13 th game was his last. One of the few AFL/VFL players to hail from Broken Hill.

    Glen!

  5. Dan, re your mention of Monteath. I was at a South Melbourne pub with Balme, Monteath, Disco Roach and a few others a couple of months ago and Monteath (who’s a very amusing, lively bloke btw) suggested they all catch up for a premiership celebration. Balmey, quick as a flash pointed out the window at a bus stop bench and said, “you can sit out there.”

  6. How many games did Selwood play in 2007 before the GF?

  7. Darryl Freame was the last Richmond player to kick the ball before KB turned Stan Magro inside-out on the boundary line for the seventh goal of the GF (and most replayed of his career).

  8. ajc – not sure he missed one in that season??

  9. Hey Glen Tex is another one from Broken Hill

Great story AJC re Bruce Monteath

Thanks Rick, Freame will forever be In Grand Final Highlights

Selwood played 21 Games in 2007 AJC & Dips
