  1. Great team! I would also mention Darryl Hewitt, the uncle of Lleyton Hewitt. Darryl Hewitt played 26 games for St Kilda in 1981-82.

The captain should be Jack Trengove.

I’m not sure if it qualifies for a connection, but as mentioned in the news last week, Jack Buckley, from GWS, has a girlfriend, Celeste Mucci, who is competing for Australia in Athletics in the upcoming Paris Olympics in the hurdles.

I am not sure why Mark Biclavs wasn’t included in the starting 18. Maybe Brett Chalmers was put ahead of him because Kyle Chalmers is a better Olympian than on the Biclav’s side.

Anyway, I’ve made up a side of the players which weren’t included in the starting 18 that have other Olympic connections in their family. I have also included Darryl Hewitt and Jack Buckley, as well as the emergencies and sub from the original named team, to strengthen this team.

B: Martin Bolger (Rich), Mark Biclavs (Geel), Werner Reiterer (Ess)

HB: Allen Lewis (Rich), James Buckley (GWS), Oleg Markov (Rich/GC/Coll)

C: James Tomkins (Melb), Steve Goulding (NM), Cameron McKenzie-McHarg (Foots)

HF: Glyn Hewitt (Richmond), Tyrone Vickery (Rich/Haw), Peter Weightman (Fitz)

F: Jack Peris (St Kilda), Michael Byrne (Haw/Melbourne), Fred Davies (Carl)

R: Dean Brogan (PA/GWS), Gerard Neesham (Syd), Darryl Hewitt (St K)

Int: Austin Bradtke (Melb), Peter Weightman (Melb)

This team will play a match against the original starting 18 and the venue will be Paris Saint-Germain’s Parc des Princes.

Transport will be provided by Olympic Air.

Entertainment will be provided by the theme song for the 1980 Olympics, Moscow.

Let’s hope for a good game of football and the players will be going for gold!

  2. Malcolm Rulebook Ashwood says

Rodney superb incredible research – have sent on to Neil Craig – Rachel Sporn and The Trengove clan

  3. Thanks Anon I just went immediate family members and not partners just to keep the side to a limit.
Like your idea also have Amigos Pare Siempre play

Thanks for your kind words Malcolm I enjoyed it

  4. One I did forget was Simon Keenan Australian rower son of Peter

  5. Former Collingwood player and current SANFL player Jack Magden has a sister Tess Magden, who is the captain of the current Australian Opals basketball team and she is competing in her 2nd Olympics in Paris.

James Borlase (Adelaide Crows 4 games) has a sister Isobel Borlase, who is competing for the Australian Opals in basketball at the Paris Olympics. It is her 1st Olympics.
James Borlase can therefore replace James Buckley at centre half back in the second team.
Jack Magden can replace Werner Reiterer in the back pocket of the 2nd team, demoting Reiterer to the interchange bench.

Peter Keenan can now be the ruckman for the 2nd team. Dean Brogan can be moved to the forward pocket and Jack Peris can be demoted to the interchange bench, which now has 4 players.

The theme songs for both of the AFL/VFL Olympic teams named should be The Brisbane Lions theme song and the old Fitzroy Football Club theme song, as they are both the tunes to the French National Anthem, “La Marseillaise”.

  6. Thanks Anon a very good pickup, I have for some reason neglected this year Olympics.

In the 20km walk today is Declan Tingay son of Steven
