Almanac Teams: Forgotten Fathers

This side is based on players since 1980 who had fathers that played in the VFL/AFL but are lesser known or perhaps even forgotten.

The criteria is based that the father must have played at least one game and the sons were established players. For example if a father played 20 games and son played 20 games I have not put them in for consideration.

Apart from Brown and Whitnall these players did not qualify as Father-Son picks. When Brown and Whitnall were drafted the requirement was 50 games it is now 100 games. If there was no limit can you imagine Warren Tredrea at Collingwood, Matthew Lloyd and Brett Deledio at Carlton, Brayden Maynard and Scott Wynd at Melbourne or Garry Lyon at Hawthorn?

Please feel free to comment I have missed and please feel free to make suggestions even if prior to 1980.

  1. Ta Rodney.

‘Turkey Tom’ Carroll is from before my time, but he’s from Ganmain, the hay bale town in the Riverina.

There’s a few names that threw me. I wasn’t aware of the lineages of Luke Ball, Liam Jones, Tony Dickson, also Matthaeus Philippou, I recall their fathers. Thankyou for the mention of Elijah & Ollie Hollands being the sons of Ben Hollands. I asked about this recently but was told NO. You’ve clarified it now.

    Another fine team,keep them coming.

    Glen!

  2. Thanks Glen, some I was not aware but was confirmed when researching online.
Ben Hollands was on SEN just prior to Ollie debut

  3. DBalassone says

Great stuff Rodney. Really enjoying your work – was not aware of quite a few of these. Great concept for a team.

  4. Luke Reynolds says

    Another cracking team mate.

New Western Bulldogs signing James O’Donnell might be a future addition to this team.

  5. Joel Bowden- 265 games Richmond (no premierships)
Father Michael played just 59 (although 1 premiership )
But I presume Rodney that being a member of a premiership team means he is not “forgotten”.
Richo was another one who outshone his dad who i think was a flag-winner.
Nick Daicos may outshine his father but his father was no slouch either. Somehow i cant see Nick or Josh -for that matter- kicking 13 goals in a game!

  6. Thanks for your kinds D, Luke & Dan

Hopefully James gets a game unsure if Simon would be a forgotten player

Dan I did consider Bowden but thought he may not be as lesser known being a premiership player. It’s like John Georgiades as well only playing 20 games but is not forgotten due to his first few games.

  7. Phil Hill says

    A most enjoyable read

  8. Thanks Phil
