Almanac Teams: Forgotten Brothers (Part 2)

 

This side is based on players since 2000 who might be termed ‘forgotten’ brothers of more noted players of the VFL/AFL. This is the second edition with selections from 2000-2022 (you can read find the first edition HERE.)

 

I have based the team on lesser known sibling.

Brett Goodes – 22 games Western Bulldogs (2013-2015)

Brother – Adam Goodes 372 games Sydney (1999-2015)

 

Brett was Pick 4 in the 2013 Rookie Draft aged 29. Adam is two-time premiership player, two-time Brownlow Medallist and four-time All Australian.

 

 

Michael Talia – 30 games Western Bulldogs (2012-2015), 1 game Sydney (2016)

Brother – Daniel Talia 200 games Adelaide 2010-2021

 

Michael was Pick 39 in the 2011 Draft. Daniel was a two time All Australian. Their grandfather was Harvey Stevens who played in the 1954 premiership for Footscray.

 

 

Xavier Richards – 12 games Sydney (2013-2016)

Brother – Ted Richards 33 games Essendon (2002-2005), 228 games Sydney 2006-2016

 

Xavier was Pick 29 in the 2013 Rookie Draft and played in the 2016 Grand Final. Ted was a premiership player and All Australian in 2012.

 

 

Corey Maynard – 2 games Melbourne (2017-2018)

Brother – Brayden Maynard 168 games Collingwood (2015- )

 

Corey played basketball for the Cairns Taipans from 2014-2015. Brayden was All Australian in 2022.

Travis Gaspar – 28 games West Coast (2001-2005)

Brother – Darren Gaspar 21 games Sydney (1994-1995), 207 games Richmond (1996-2007)

 

Travis was Pick 14 in the 1999 Draft and was a member of the 2005 Premiership side. Darren was All Australian in 2000-2001. A third brother Damien played 29 games for Melbourne from 1995-1998.

 

 

Marcus Picken – 25 games Brisbane (1998-2001)

Brother – Liam Picken 198 games Western Bulldogs (2009-2019)

 

Marcus was Pick 58 in the 1997 Draft and was traded to Western Bulldogs but did not play a game. Liam was a 2016 Premiership player. Their father Billy played 240 games for Collingwood and Sydney.

 

 

Hamish Brayshaw – 1 game West Coast (2020)

Brothers – Angus and Andrew Brayshaw

Angus 150 games Melbourne (2015- )

Andrew 107 games Fremantle (2018- )

 

Hamish was Pick 67 in the 2017 Draft. Angus is a 2021 Premiership player. Andrew won the AFL MVP in 2022. Their father Mark played 32 games for North Melbourne.

 

 

Matthew Ball – 17 games Hawthorn (2004-2006)

Brother – Luke Ball 142 games St Kilda (2003-2009), 81 games Collingwood (2010-2014)

 

Matthew was Pick 51 in the 2003 Draft. Luke was a premiership player at Collingwood and All Australian in 2005. Their father Ray played 55 games for Richmond and South Melbourne.

 

 

Ed Phillips – 15 games St Kilda (2018-2020)

Brother – Tom Phillips 89 games Collingwood (2016-2020), 26 games Hawthorn (2021-2022)

 

Ed was Pick 56 in the 2016 Draft. Tom played in Collingwood’s 2018 Grand Final.

 

 

Jarrod Cameron – 12 games West Coast (2019-2020)

Brother – Charlie Cameron 73 games Adelaide (2014-2017), 110 games Brisbane (2018- )

 

Jarrod was Pick 39 in the 2018 Draft. Charlie was an All Australian in 2019.

 

 

Matthew Westhoff – 6 games Port Adelaide (2008-2009)

Brother – Justin Westhoff 280 games Port Adelaide (2007-2020)

 

Matthew was Pick 33 in the 2007 Draft. Justin won a Best & Fairest at Port Adelaide in 2018.

 

 

Brent LeCras – 6 games North Melbourne (2005-2006)

Brother – Mark LeCras 219 games West Coast (2005-2018)

 

Brent was Pick 56 in the 2003 Draft. Mark was a Premiership player in 2018 and All Australian in 2010.

Shane Harvey – 11 games Essendon (2002-2003) 3 games North Melbourne (2004)

Brother – Brent Harvey 432 games North Melbourne (1996-2019)

 

Shane was Pick 18 in the 2001 Draft. Brent was a 1999 Premiership player, four-time All Australian and VFL/AFL games record holder.

 

 

Joel Tippett – 2 games Gold Coast (2011), 7 games North Melbourne (2014-2015)

Brother – Kurt Tippett 104 games Adelaide (2007-2012) 74 games Sydney (2013-2019)

 

Joel was initially drafted by Brisbane in 2007. Kurt won the 2010 goalkicking at Adelaide and in 2013 at Sydney.

 

 

Ricky O’Loughlin – 9 games Adelaide (2000-2001)

Brother – Michael O’Loughlin 303 games Sydney (1995-2009)

 

Ricky was Pick 51 in the 1999 Draft. Michael was a premiership player in 2005 and two-time All Australian.

 

 

Luke Ottens – 4 games Melbourne (1999-2000)

Brother – Brad Ottens 129 games Richmond (1998-2004), 116 games Geelong (2005-2011)

 

Luke was Pick 50 in the 1997 Draft. Brad was a three-time premiership player and All Australian in 2001.

Jackson Merrett – 56 games Essendon (2012-2018)

Brother – Zach Merrett 189 games Essendon (2014- )

 

Jackson was Pick 31 in the 2011 Draft. Zach is a two-time All Australian and has been captain since this year.

 

 

Brandon Jack – 28 games Sydney (2013-2017)

Brother – Kieren Jack 256 games Sydney (2007-2019)

 

Brandon was Pick 58 in the 2013 Rookie Draft. Kieren is a 2012 Premiership player and was All Australian in 2013.

Claye Beams – 54 games Brisbane (2011-2017)

Brother – Dayne Beams 119 games Collingwood (2009-2014, 2019), 58 games Brisbane (2015-2018)

 

Claye was Pick 76 in the 2010 Rookie Draft. Dayne is a 2010 Premiership Player and 2012 All Australian.

 

 

Ayce Cordy – 27 games Western Bulldogs (2011-2015)

Brother – Zaine Cordy 118 games Western Bulldogs (2015-2022), 7 Games St Kilda (2023- )

 

Ayce was Pick 14 in the 2008 Draft. Zaine is a 2016 premiership player. Father Brian and uncles Neil and Graeme all played for Footscray.

 

 

Scott Freeborn – 48 games Carlton (2000-2002)

Brother – Glenn Freeborn 55 games North Melbourne (1995-1998), 83 games Collingwood (1999-2003)

 

Scott was initially listed by Port Adelaide before he was traded to North Melbourne. Glenn was a premiership player in 1996.

 

 

Travis Tuck – 20 games Hawthorn (2007-2009)

Brother – Shane Tuck 173 games Richmond (2004-2013)

 

Travis was Pick 38 in the 2005 Draft. Shane finished top three in the Richmond Best & Fairest three times. Their father Michael has played the second most VFL/AFL Games with 426 and is a seven-time premiership player.

 

 

Joe Atley – 4 games Port Adelaide (2017-2019)

Brother – Shaun Atley 234 games North Melbourne (2011-2021)

 

Joe was Pick 32 in the 2016 Draft. Shaun was Pick 17 in the 2010 Draft.

Scott Bassett – 15 games Port Adelaide (1999-2002) 15 games Western Bulldogs (2003-2004)

Brother – Nathan Bassett 210 games Adelaide (1998-2008)

 

Scott was on Port Adelaide’s initial rookie list and was drafted by the Western Bulldogs with Pick 35 in 2002. Nathan was All Australian in 2006.

 

 

Darcy Daniher – 6 games Essendon (2008-2009)

Brother – Joe Daniher 108 games Essendon (2013-2020), 50 games Brisbane (2021- )

 

Darcy was Pick 39 in the 2007 Draft. Joe was an All Australian in 2017. Their father Anthony played 233 games and uncles Neale, Terry and Chris all played in the VFL/AFL.

 

 

Kyle Dunkley – 5 games Melbourne (2019)

Brother – Josh Dunkley 116 games Western Bulldogs (2016-2022), 7 games Brisbane (2023- )

 

Kyle was Pick 3 in the 2019 Mid-Season Draft. Josh is a 2016 Premiership player and Best & Fairest in 2022. Their father Andrew played 217 games for Sydney.

 

 

Chad Jones – 6 games North Melbourne (2004-2006), 7 games West Coast (2007-2008)

Brother – Brett Jones 102 games West Coast (2004-2011)

 

Chad was Pick 24 in the 2003 Draft and was rookie listed by West Coast. Brett was a premiership player in 2006.

Jay Van Berlo – 32 games Fremantle (2009-2012)

Brother – Nathan Van Berlo 205 games Adelaide (2005-2016)

Jay was rookie listed with Pick 69 in 2009. Nathan was Adelaide captain from 2011-2014.

 

 

Nick Daicos – 32 games Collingwood (2022- )

Brother – Josh Daicos 84 games Collingwood (2017- )
