Another strong team, Rodney, as is the others named, who missed out on the original team.
I was wondering whether Brad Boyd, who captained Fitzroy in 1995-1996 and who then played 15 games for the Brisbane Lions from 1997-1999, was left out because he was one of the 8 Fitzroy players that were allowed to be recruited to the Brisbane Lions outside of the normal draft or trade system, when Fitzroy was placed into administration in 1996, and its AFL operations were merged into those of the Brisbane Bears, who became the Brisbane Lions in 1997.
Therefore, did you decide that Fitzroy and the Brisbane Lions were the same club for the purpose of these articles, similar to South Melbourne being the same as Sydney, although that was a relocation.
Also, is that the reason why in your previous captain’s article from last week, Chris Johnson was left out, as he was also one of those 8 former Fitzroy players who then went to the Brisbane Lions and was Co-Captain of the Brisbane Lions in 2007, having played 59 games for Fitzroy from 1994-1996?
Once again, Ron Barassi, Des Tuddenham and Barry Davis, from a different era, are applicable for this particular article too.
Ron Barassi was Melbourne captain in 1960-64 and then moved to Carlton as a captain-coach from 1965-69, where he retired as a player in 1969, but still coached Carlton until the end of 1971.
Des Tuddenham was Collingwood captain from 1966-69, then became Essendon captain-coach from 1972-75, then Collingwood captain again in 1976.
Barry Davis was captain of Essendon in 1970 and 1971. He then went on to captain North Melbourne’s first premiership side in 1975, and he then retired as a player.
Hello Anon
Thanks for kind words
I didnt put in Johnson or Boyd as Fitzroy merged with Brisbane, so hence they did not move to a new club the Brisbane Lions is a merger of Brisbane & Fitzroy.
Lynch was added because he had moved from Fitzroy to Brisbane before the trade.
Barassi, Davis & Tuddenham are good examples prior to 1980
Stan Alves is another pre-1980 example, Melbourne skipper 1973-76 then played in North’s 1977 premiership team, John Murphy of Fitzroy is another
