Almanac Teams: What Broughton the tale of the Tape?; Best of 48 (1980- )

Richmond’s Stephen Ryan [Source: Author]

This is a team of best players to wear the Number 48 jumper since 1980.

  • Starting 18 will be one player from each club. I have tweaked it after the Number 3 team. Brisbane Bears and Brisbane Lions will be one club, with Fitzroy, Gold Coast and GWS competing for the last two spots in the starting 18.
  • Teams will try to be as balanced as possible but if a number has several rucks as its best player an alternative will be picked. I will explain my selections below the team.
  • Players may appear under multiple numbers, for example Eddie Betts numbers 18 and 19.

Stats are based on their time in that number.

I also have two teams per number, one is a best of and the other is based on players picked for different obscure/unusual reasons like cameos, unknown brothers, fathers, known for other reasons.

When I did this side I was surprised there was not at least one player who had played over 100 games. Mal Michael is the only one to have played over 50 (61). Even players they went on to to be good players in other numbers is really limited to Jakovich, Burke, Hinkley, Calthorpe and Baker. The strength of the side is the depth of talls and the X factor possibilities up forward in Hinkley, Peterson, Cuthbertson and Jurrah. David Calthorpe and Liam Baker are the premiership players in the side.

Clubs with multiple options are Fremantle with Greg Madigan and Greg Broughton, Melbourne with Darren Cuthbertson, Liam Jurrah and Jack Fitzpatrick, and Richmond with Jeff Hogg, Stephen Ryan, Duncan Kellaway and Kane Lambert.

The backline is led by Glen Jakovich at CHB. Jakovich wore Number 48 in his first year and played the last 16 games in a row as an 18 year old defender/ruck. In this side of players with limited games and skill, it needs Jakovich’s talent and potential at CHB. Seb Tape is at FB, he was Pick 13 in the 2010 Draft and played 40 games in six years with 23 in the first two years before he suffered an ACL rupture in his second year and missed twelve months. Sam Frost and Greg Madigan are in the back pockets and both are 195cm and both able to play key defence or as a third tall intercept defender. Frost wore Number 48 in three seasons at GWS before he moved to Melbourne; at Hawthorn he has shown a capacity to play on small forwards and also with dash. Jordan Doering and Nathan Krakouer are on the half back flanks. Doering played 17 games after he came off the rookie list with best of 25 disposals. Krakouer started at Port Adelaide then went to Gold Coast and after three seasons out of the AFL was re-rookied at Port Adelaide; he wore Number 48 in his second stint. Krakouer had a best of 31 disposals. Other potential defenders are Mal Michael as a FB, Stephen Ryan as a CHB, Greg Broughton, Ken Hinkley, Andrew Demetriou and Liam Baker as half backs and Matthew Jaensch, Nathan Burke as small defenders.

Brad Tunbridge at 195cm (same height as Frost and Madigan) made his debut at age 26 after being drafted with Pick 8 the year before. Tunbridge initially wore Number 48 before he wore Number 2 at Sydney; he had 38 games in two seasons before a back injury forced him into premature retirement. Matthew Jaensch played mainly as a small defender but in this side he will start on ball and change with possibly Liam Baker, Jordan Doering or Nathan Krakouer. David Calthorpe started his career in Number 48 and when bought into the ‘Baby Bombers’ side midway through 1993, he held his spot and had a very good Grand Final including a long solo goal that really was the sealer. Nathan Burke wore Number 48 in his first year as a 17 year old and averaged 17 disposals mainly in backline/wing with a best of 27 disposals in Round 22. Burke also wore numbers 29 and 3 and became an all time great midfielder for St Kilda over 300 games. Stephen Ryan appeared in Number 48 in his first year and was one of the recruits of 1990; he played every game and kicked 28 goals from wing/half forward which turned out to be most for Richmond that season. Ryan kicked four goals twice and had a best of 29 disposals. Nigel Kellett is on the other wing, he played 101 games with just six of those in Number 48 but he showed a glimpse of his future potential in the jumper with 20+ disposals in his last two games. Other midfield options are Greg Madigan, Carl Peterson and Glen Jakovich as back up ruck. Mark Arceri, Liam Baker, Nathan Krakouer, Jordan Doering and Andrew Demetriou as midfielders.

Mal Michael may be considered a surprise at FF but he did play a little bit there at Collingwood; 14 goals in 2000, with bags of four and three. Ray Windsor is at CHF and he kicked 22 goals from 23 games and is best known for kicking a goal after the siren to draw a match against West Coast. The enigmatic Darren Cuthbertson is in one pocket and in his first year in 1991 he looked like he could be anything. Cuthbertson played 32 games in three seasons for 41 goals including 16 games in 1991 for 29 goals with 19 goals in three weeks in games 4-6 of his career which included seven against reigning premier Collingwood. Arceri played 92 games for 133 goals with ten of them in Number 48 for nine goals; he had a career high of five goals. Ken Hinkley started his career as a will-o’-wisp, long sleeved half forward at Fitzroy in the Number 48 jumper. Hinkley played 10 games in his first year for 20 goals including a bag of five and two bags of four. Peterson was only 183cm but had a big leap on him that saw him play ruck prior to being drafted, originally by Richmond, but later at Hawthorn. Peterson played one year for 17 games and 13 goals before he left the AFL with three games of two goals. Other forward options are Liam Jurrah at FF and Stephen Ryan and Liam Baker as flankers.

On the bench is Liam Baker who wore Number 48 in his first two years as a small forward before he became a rebound defender and has now shown ability to play in the midfield, which is where he will likely play in this side. Greg Broughton played half back in his first year as a rookie pick in fifteen games and averaged 22 disposals a game. Andrew Demetriou wore Number 48 in 12 games in his first year in 1981, averaged 17 disposals and in the last five games of the year gathered over 20 disposals in each game with 26 his highest. Liam Jurrah was an exciting high marking forward who played nine games in 2009 for 20 goals with three bags of four goals.

Nathan Burke and Ken Hinkley were AFL captains though Burke in a lower number and Hinkley at a different club. Although only 17 when he wore Number 48 I went Glen Jakovich as skipper, Nathan Burke as vice captain and Mal Michael as deputy.

The unlucky players were Stephen Newport (Melb), Duncan Kellaway and Kane Lambert (Rich).

  1. Colin Ritchie says

David Calthorpe played 92 games at Essendon, 9 at Brisbane, and 13 at NM.

  2. Cheers Colin
Games played is based on in that number
As your probably aware Calthorpe moved to Number 14 in 1994 at Essendon
