Almanac Teams: Arrivals and Departures (Geelong)
This year for football teams I have gone back to a theme. A team of Arrivals and Departures at each club. I hope they go down well.
The criteria for each team
- Based each team of players from 1980 onwards;
- Have tried to put a player in from each of the remaining 18 teams, including Fitzroy on most occasions;
- Have tried to be as balanced as possible, though the interchange regardless of balance will be next best four players;
- The player is based on from previous club and to immediate next club;
- Stats are based on the club and for arrivals, the immediate club before and for departures, the immediate club after;
- The Arrivals team is based on the performance at the club, while departures is based on the performance at their new club.
If I’ve missed anyone, please advise, and please enjoy.

Thanks Rodney massive respect I understand how much research goes in to these sides
Only to prove I read it thoroughly – Brad Ottens had to be 1st ruck imo and I’d back the arrivals team
After reading all of that my head is spinning. A massive lot of research there and made interesting reading. Like Rulebook, I have massive respect for all the work put into that exercise – well done.
Thanks Malcom & Fisho
I enjoy the research, afltables is a great website to use.
I would say Ottens is a better ruck though Barnes was very good in Geelong Grand Final years and played for Victoria. Ottens I thought was better forward/ruck and was All Australian as a forward/ruck (though when at Richmond when a youngster and more agile)
Same, Rodney. Total respect here – for your weekly efforts. I’ve added you to the list of columnists on the home page.
Great reading for us Catters – although some sadness there as well. Too many got away. But we found some beauties as well. Brad Ottens being right up there.
I’d be interested to hear from Cats fans: which players were our greatest losses?
I’ll start by saying Shane Mumford would be in that conversation.
Thanks John for your kind words.
Mumford is a good one as would have being logical replacement for Ottens after he retired in 2011.
While Gazza jnr is a great, Greg Williams would have perhaps helped Geelong make finals in 87, 90 and maybe a premiership in 89 91 & 92 though Paul Couch was a great alternative
Great work Rodney to comprehensively list all these players. Worth a Charlie.
Thanks to Stephen Wells et al the GFC & the Myrtleford Football Club, the arrivals made a huge difference.
The Coaches from 1980 on would also be an interesting list.
Thanks John
Stephen Wells is a master, especially with low picks
