Almanac Teams: 100 goals for two clubs

The Western Bulldogs’ Barry Hall [Source: Author]

This week’s side is based on players that have kicked 100 goals for two different clubs. Last week I did 100 games and Glen! commented on how many have kicked 100 goals for two different clubs and if a side could be done. I thought I would have a crack knowing the backline would be an issue. There is fortunately some sort of backline, a midfield and, of course, plenty of forward options.

Coleman Medal winners at both clubs are Lance Franklin, Tony Lockett, and Doug Wade

Leading Goalkicker at both clubs are Gary Ablett Jnr, Jason Akermanis, Eddie Betts, Doug Wade, Lance Franklin, Jeff Garlett, Fraser Gehrig, Tony Lockett, Alistair Lynch, Tom Lynch, Paul Medhurst, Tony Modra, Bernie Quinlan, Saverio Rocca, Jake Stringer, Brian Taylor, Nathan Thompson, Kurt Tippett and Jarrad Waite.

With this team it was interesting to see how to position players in all the other positions bar the forward line. Akermanis is the small back pocket having played there when Leigh Matthews was appointed coach in 1998-1999 before he was moved into the midfield. Alistair Lynch played a lot of his football at Fitzroy at FB and was one of the game’s best defenders in the early 1990s. Ross Glendinning won a Brownlow medal at CHB and was equally brilliant at CHB or CHF and later FF. Shaun Burgoyne was a problem fixer for Hawthorn – he played half back, wing or half forward. Fraser Gehrig played every position for West Coast and was mobile enough to provide dash and intercept marks. He also spent his first two years at St Kilda in defence. Jarrad Waite spent his early years at Carlton between defence and forward and could be an intercept defender.

There are three rucks to choose from in Round, Ottens, and Tippett. The midfield starting three spent most of their careers there while Bell and Stringer are pushed to the wings. There are plenty of forward options and I think it is a reasonable balance of talls and smalls. Modra maybe the surprise in the starting 18 but I picked him as an aerial alternative to Lockett’s strength and leading up forward.

  1. Well done Rodney, top effort.

A few names there I wasn’t aware of being in the 2 X 100 grouping. This includes Paul Medhurst, Nathan Thompson, Kurt Tippett, and Jarrad Waite. How did I forget Brian Walsh?

Your sides are well researched, and look very formidable on paper. Keep up the good work.

    Glen!

  2. Kevin Densley says

Nicely put together Rodney, as is usual for your work. Fine effort!

  3. Rulebook says

Excellent Rodney certainly a lot more than I thought there was

  4. Great team Rodney but not as well-balanced as your other teamsobviously.
Has anyone kicked the ton for 2 different teams. I assume Lockett has for St Kilda and Sydney.
Jacko had an exceptional goals per game ratio but will always be remembered for his antics. .

  5. Jeez these Victorians are parochial. Malcolm Blight – the second greatest footballer ever (after Barrie Robran) kicked 126 goals for Woodville (SANFL) in 1985 and 102 goals for North Melbourne (VFL) in 1982.

  6. Thanks for your kind words and great idea Glen. Ottens was the surprise for me as he played ruck for Geelong than he did as a forward.

Thanks for your kind words Kevin & Rulebook & Dan

Doug Wade kicked 100 goals at Geelong & North Dan.

Sorry Peter I think your stirring. I am just sticking to what I know. Wish I had seen Blight live. You do make a great point.
I see Simon Beasley also almost did winning WAFL with 97 goals in 1980
