Almanac Soccer: That’s it for Barnsley!
It’s my sad task to report that ‘The Lads’ from Swansea were too good for Barnsley in the play offs. First game was 1-0 and the second was 1-1, which was good enough for this team from Wales to play Brentford known as ‘The Bees’ for promotion to the Premier League.
When you consider that Barnsley was down the bottom after the first few games, it’s been a great season. The appointment of the new Manager Valerien Ismael and signing of player Dykes from the US turned the fortunes of the club around. I reckon things look good for next season.
On Saturday I watched The Roys Boys take on St Bedes Mentone in a twilight game at the Brunswick Street Oval. To my shame, I left the game into the last quarter, when I thought that the Fitzroy were going to lose!!!
Later that night, I checked the scores and found out we won by three points, I couldn’t believe it.
Can someone who saw the game give a short summary of the last 15 minutes?

Rod,
Obviously I was not at BSO, but I saw some video online of a Fitzroy player kicking the winning goal after the siren. Amazing scenes followed.
Smokie;
I would love to see that video, how do I go about watching it?
It’s one of the very few times over many many years of watching footy and other sports that I have left early.
I have learnt a very hard lesson.
Mr Oaten
It is sad that Barnsley missed out, but be heartened by Brentford beating Bournemouth.
Let me explain. Of the gallant band that achieved promotion last year, 2 of the 3 – West Brom and Fulham faced the high jump this year. Of last years relegated teams, two out of 3, Watford and Norwich, were promoted this year.
Had Bournemouth prevailed it would be 5 yo-yos out of 6, giving little hope for teams such as Barnsley and Brentford to finally mix it with the big boys. here is renewed hope for Barnsley next year, provided they can get past the yo-yos.
