Almanac Soccer:  It’s bleak in Barnsley.

To say The Tykes are doing it tough is a gross understatement.  Very little joy on the pitch, and a pretty bleak future as far as football goes and pandemic fears.

To be in South Yorkshire at this time of the year takes some getting used to. The footpaths start to freeze so an inexperienced walker like me had to hang on to fences to move along. I would continue to search out dirt or gravel surfaces to keep moving.  The days are pretty gloomy and wet and cold, and if my memory serves me correctly, I was wearing just about all my clothes out of the back pack to stay warm.

It was the warmth and friendship of Barnsley people that that kept you going especially the Lambert family and the Fitswilliam Hotel crowd that made the difference all those years ago.

But back to Barnsley FC. The last five matches have gone, loss to Swansea City, loss to Peterborough United, draw with Huddersfield Town followed by a loss to Preston NorthEnd.  Their last game against West Brom. Albion resulted in a nil all draw. The game was played on the Tykes home ground in bitterly cold foggy conditions and to make matters worse the ground was bogey!!!

West Brom Albion’s manager was the same man who lead a remarkable transformation for the Tykes last year, Valerien Ismael. Apparently WBAlbion have not won at Barnsley since 1947, which is a bloody long time. I’m not sure how many times they have played there since then with promotion and relegation, but Manager Ismael could not pull off a victory.

Barnsley play their next game after Christmas, so they stay second last on the ladder and with another 25 games to go (hope that’s right).  I keep hoping for a miraculous turn around like last year when they were in a similar position, but I won’t be putting any money on it.
