Almanac Soccer: Battling Barnsley

Barnsley seems to make a habit of keeping their supporters on their toes at the end of the each season.

Twelve months ago they were on a high with a chance of promotion to the Premier grade, the previous two or three years they were battling to survive in the Championship and this year it’s the same.

A new Manager took over The Tykes in January, Poya Asbaghi. He must have been a very brave person, he came to a new country and took over a team on the bottom of the ladder with only 10 fit footballers. Injuries, covid and lack of form had the club staring at a bleak future. Before he got the job at Barnsley he was the Manager of the Swedish under 21 team.

And things didn’t change much for the club , they lost their next four games, but then in February a change, and I don’t mean the weather which remained bitter, the Tykes showed fight and after a very close loss to Coventry City 1-0 they beat Hull City 2-0 and Middlesbrough 3-2.  In March Derby County were too good 2-0 followed by a one all draw with Stoke City and a great effort when they held ladder leader Fulham to a one all draw. The last game they played was against Bristol City and the result for the Tykes was a 2-0 win.

There are still nine games left in the season and Barnsley are sitting in 22nd position, two points below Reading who are clinging on to their ‘safety spot’. Reading’s form has not been good so it could be a real battle to see how things turn out. Barnsley play neighbours Sheffield United on March 19 and then Reading on April 2. What a game that will be, a real battle of survival.

Go Tykes.

  1. Yikes Tykes lost; Reading won. 5 points adrift now. Keep the faith Rod.
Note to Editors: As Shane Warne famously said “a coach is what gets you to the ground”. Manager please.
I’ve become a devoted Celtic fan following Aussie Ange on the world stage. His teams always play a brilliant attacking style. 3 points ahead of Rangers with an Old Firm Derby in two weeks likely deciding the champion.
Went to bed last night with Dundee 1-0 up against Rangers at half time. Woke to 2 Rangers second half goals. Damn. My enemy’s enemy is my friend.

  2. Dennis Gedling says

Forest still quietly milling about in the play off spots. Really hoping they finally get back up. If they pulled the trigger on sacking Chris Houghton earlier than they did they would be challenging for automatic promotion.

Ange-Ball is tremendous and his acceptance from the fans has been an extraordinary achievement.
