Almanac Soccer: Barnsley FC 2022 – Relegation awaits
I don’t think that Spring arrived early in Barnsley this year, actually I think it’s always a little later than those areas further south, so there was no Spring miracle for the Tykes in the form of football results.
In mid March they lost to neighbours Sheffield United 2-0 and in their next game could only come up with a draw against another club facing relegation, Reading. I was really hoping for a win but it wasn’t to be.
A week later they faced Millwall ,a club battling for promotion, and they gave Barnsley a thrashing 4-1. I couldn’t see how their position in the Championship could be saved and unfortunately my pessimism turned out to be correct. They managed a draw against Swansea City which didn’t help their cause and then went down to Peterborough United 2-0 and Huddersfield Town 2-1.
There are still a few games to be played in the season but it wouldn’t effect the Tykes who won’t be in the Championship next season no matter what results take place.
So according to the BBC Sport the Tykes will be playing in League One next year against teams like Bolton Wanderers, Sunderland, Accrington-Stanley, Charlton Athletic and Shrewsbury Town.
It’s been a very disappointing season for the Tykes, last year they came very close to promotion to Premier Division. In the off season they lost their Manager and a couple of star players and the wheels came off. They spent the greater part of the season in the bottom four and despite a couple of surprise results that lifted spirits were never in a safe position.
English football must be one of the unfairest competions going around. Every year it’s the same four or five top clubs vying for top honours. It wasn’t always the case, but when “Big Money” got heavily involved all those years ago, the competition amongst clubs went down the sink.
Lets hope that Ken and his Barnsley mates enjoy the off season and look forward to a positive League One season later in the year.

Sad to read about Barnsley, but all is not lost. They now have a chance to win the first divvy championship – promoted first. Fellow battlers Fulham look like winning the Championship, a far cry from Premier League Champions or European Cup, but it’s a start.
So it won’t be an empty trophy cabinet for the mob up the road from Arthur’s Winchester Club. There are too many clubs and too much money in England for the battlers to succeed. But this afflicts Germany, Spain and Italy as well…
My Eagles and your Essendon are very grateful relegation doesn’t apply in AFL.
Here’s hoping for Luton Town to win the play-offs as a shock result for the battlers against the more affluent clubs out there in the championship
