Well the inaugural win by MOANA PASIFIKA will live long in the memory and go down as a fairy tale worth recounting over and over again. The HURRICANES looked like they had the game in hand going into the final ten minutes, but as has been the case with so many of the NZ games this year, there was a twist to come. The Islanders were dogged in attack in the final moments to level the scores and force the tournament’s first Golden Point finish. They then capitalised on a ‘Canes error to score a long-range try that would have had most of Somoa and Tonga on their feet. Stirring stuff. Congratulations to them.
The REBELS got their first win of the season over the DRUA. While much of the game was lacklustre, there were some sparks to suggest the Melburnians may be on the up and up.
It was a cracker in Perth on Friday night when the BRUMBIES held out a fast-finishing FORCE. Those bloody Sandgropers are proving to be a real handful and, most importantly, silencing the critics of Australia furnishing five teams.
Naturally, the BLUES game had to go down to the wire again. They are real suckers for punishment. Pretty much every game they exert early dominance only to let teams back into the contest late. The HIGHLANDERS just aren’t good enough to win clutch games.
The CRUSADERS were determined to show the CHIEFS that the win they snatched just a few weeks ago was an aberration.
To finish off the round, at a wet Lang Park, the ‘TAHS fought valiantly but were outclassed by the REDS. It’s nice to see, though, that the boys in blue are stringing together some real form that suggests the horror of last season is truly behind them.
In Round 7, Moana Pasifika and the Blues play each other twice in five days. In Australia, the Force and Rebels have byes while the return bout of the heavyweights (Reds v Brumbies) is the highlight.

Grew up playing the rugby codes in suburban Sydney. Moved to Melbourne during the Carey era so becoming a Shinboner was the natural call. Still love the game they play in heaven. Took an interest in MLB a few years back and have become infatuated with America’s pastime.
