In the second round of Super Rugby action, we saw some of the regular contenders flex their muscle and a couple of others show real fighting spirit. Unfortunately, our Tongan and Samoan cousins couldn’t take the park again over the weekend. The rugby community is right behind Moana Pasifika and we all look forward to seeing them out there next round, hopefully.

The HIGHLANDERS matched it with the CRUSADERS in the first half of their clash. In fact, early in the second they really got on a roll. However, the men in red clicked into gear and were dominant in the final quarter.

In soaking rain, the ‘TAHS and REDS went head to head at Leichhardt Oval on Friday night. Considering the atrocious conditions, it was a high-quality game that both sides can look back on with pride.

The DRUA were once again outclassed. The BRUMBIES are building a solid campaign.

Saturday evening in Dunedin saw a classic. The BLUES seemed to have it all under control with a strong 15-man game that thwarted and repelled the attacking initiatives from the HURRICANES. In the last ten minutes, however, the Wellingtonians came alive. Their skills and ball movement were sublime. The winning try from Ardie Savea will be on highlights reels for many years to come.

Finally, we had the REBELS hosting the FORCE. It was an embarrassment for the hosts. The visitors thoroughly deserved their win, no doubt. They are an impressive team that is showing incredible spirit and tenacity. But my hometown team is pathetic. Wandering around the field like Brown’s cows, utterly clueless and lacking any verve, they should be ashamed of themselves.

The NZ matches next round look promising once again, while the first home game for the Force and the Brumbies hosting the Waratahs should also provide this scribe with some much-needed distraction. Oh, and the French are playing absolutely scintillating rugby in the Six Nations.

About

Grew up playing the rugby codes in suburban Sydney. Moved to Melbourne during the Carey era so becoming a Shinboner was the natural call. Still love the game they play in heaven. Took an interest in MLB a few years back and have become infatuated with America's pastime.

Comments

  1. Ruminator, prospects of and play in Brisbane this week are very low after the ferocious rainfall gf late. Both Ballymore and Suncorp were inundated today. Together with those games already postponed, it will make for an interesting time for the SRP organisers.

  2. Thanks for the heads up, Brian. I’m going to check out the end of that Hurricanes win now!
