Almanac Rugby League: Ron Coote named as the 14th Immortal (and about bloody time!)

Sometimes, even if belatedly, they get it right. Ron Coote has been announced as rugby league’s 14th Immortal – at last, and about bloody time! The rampaging, highly skilled backrower who was also a great cover defender received his just desserts at last night’s NRL gala dinner. In brief, Coote played 257 NSWRL games, 13 for NSW and 23 Tests between 1964-1978.

Tributes will appear throughout the media today. We won’t try to reproduce them all here but make sure you check out Alan Whitaker’s thumbnail sketch on rugbyleagueproject.org Do yourself a favour and check it all out to relive the story of one of the true great of the code.
