Almanac Rugby League – Jason Taumalolo: Wrecking Ball

It’s a rare Rugby League Day at the Almanac desk today. For our video highlight, here’s a clip to showcase our choice of Player of the Round from the past weekend’s matches, Jason Taumalolo from the North Queensland Cowboys.

Taumalolo, age 25, is a couple of years into a 10-year, $10 million contract with the Cowboys. He joined the club from high school and made his first grade debut as the youngest Cowboy ever at the age of 17 years, 2 months and 21 days. He is 191cm tall and weighs in at 117kgs. Imagine trying to stop that when he’s coming at you at full tilt, or running at him when you have possession of the ball. The lounge room couch seems like a good (safe) place to be.

In the modern game, a running forward does well to accumulate 200 metres of territory gained in a match. On Saturday night, Taumalolo ran a staggering 301 metres in wrecking ball fashion to scatter the Dragons defenders like nine-pins.

The accompanying video, admittedly from the 2017 season, gives the code’s aficionados and rugby league newcomers some idea of the power, agility and determination of this mountain of a man. The final playing the clip, taken from a match where he represented Tonga, is simply breath-taking.

  1. Wouldn’t you love to have this bloke on your side? His contract caused a lot of debate at the time it was signed (think Buddy Franklin’s deal with the Swans which was signed at a much older age than Jason’s) but, on recent form, looks like a pretty good investment. Move over ‘JT’, here’s the new incarnation JT, ‘Just Terrifying’!
