Almanac Rugby League – A character from another era
It seems to be the week of celebrating ‘characters’ from a bygone era. A post earlier today paid tribute to Brisbane NRL great Fonda Metassa who passed away over the weekend. We haven’t seen the likes of Fonda for a long time and maybe we never will.
Now we share with you this obituary provided by FNQ Almanacker Peter Hulthen who spotted it in The Townsville Bulletin recently. The wharf, the hustle and the footy – how’s that for potential character formation and the source of many a story?
Peter H tells us that eulogist Marshall Colwell is a story in his own right – maybe one for another day.

A former teacher with a (very) modest sporting CV enjoying his retirement years. A Queenslander through and through, especially when it comes to cricket and rugby league. Enjoys travel, coffee and cake, reading, McWilliam’s Cream Apera and a glass or three of wine. Footy Almanac’s Thursday online editor who moonlights as a hobby editor.
