Almanac Racing – wheat or chaff?

Whatever happened to Deep Field? This time last year he was touted a world-beater. Then came the Lightning and a loss to Lankan Rupee, handing it the “next big thing” mantle. Deep Field may be an unfortunate moniker for his destiny for all I know, but now there’s another batch of “potential superstars” to face judgement down the straight this Saturday (MR7, 1000m, WFA, G1). Whilst some are disappointed by the smallish acceptances, it oozes quality. Bookies will present an “each of two” market as Chautauqua and Exosphere present their 2016 credentials, but the support cast is impressive. My tip is Hawkes’ proven straight tracker (1) as I’m tetchy about the Godolphin at shorts from the pole. Definitely throw in Terravista, proven, suited and value.

I’ll go skinny in the Quaddy and hope:-

MR6 – here’s the value; Bon Aurum (2) at 14/1. Best to throw in likely fav 4.

MR8 – toppy. I’m not a big T.Sadler fan but this horse is just right for this race @7/1.

MR9 – 12 has been super impressive. Anchor.

Sydney has its Silver Slipper/ Millie Fox/ Hobartville card on a Good track! Fingers crossed for First Seal to return fit and well in SR5 and stalwart Catkins is a good barometer in opposition, but the “Millie” is not a betting opp. Nor is the 2yo dash where Astern goes up in the red and Defcon’s touted as the only danger. No thanks. The Hobartville (SR7) is always an interesting race and this big field might be a good ongoing formline. Hard to ignore the wraps on Press Statement, emphatic in the Caulfield Guineas which converted us southern sceptics. He has to go in on top. Dal Cielo (4) might get a cushy smother from the gate and put dollars in to multis, but there’s cases for plenty of “place chances” and replays must be repeatedly rewound.

I’m hoping to have a decent look at ‘em on Thursday night – maybe working Valley Friday evening and certainly at my post on Flemington’s Rails for Saturday’s excitement (although, of course, the despised VRC have made it an epic day – they do need time for drinks, 3 courses and palaver up in the Committee Room!).

They have no idea of what happens outside their hallowed halls, but racelovers can find their own joy at options around the nation – from Kangaroo Island to Condoblin or Coonabarabran, Woolamai to wherever…a winner’s a winner!

And Good Luck.
