Almanac Poetry: ‘Small Spider’ – Tommy Mallet

Small Spider

Repetition is defeating me.

Insomnia consumes my nights,
two jobs – both hard bush work –
and family, the days.

Once again, I drag four hours sleep
towards a pre-dawn start.
Shuffling into the carport,
chainsaw chaps still lying in
their own pile,
by the ute,
where I took them off yesterday.

As my foot goes in,
a small spider falls out,
scurrying across the floor
in frantic silence.

“Quick,” I think. “Write about it.”

Which I do, some weeks later,
in a pocket of time.
