Almanac Poetry: ‘Red’ – Tommy Mallet

Red

The red wobble robot on
my ute dash once had real
go!

Damn, it wobbled!

Look at me, I’m stupid!
I’m funny!
I’m
dancing, man! Dancing!

I… THRUST… Am just…. THRUST…And… GRUNT!

Womp, womp, womp!
Watch my straight-angled
wobbling hips!

Age has wearied it, though.
Knocks, dust
on its solar panel,
years,
hard kilometres of bush roads,
bush grime.

It now twitches on a lean –
small, Parkinson’s movements,
of an old man, trying to
stand still.

The mistake I made,
in hindsight,
was facing it
inwards,
to entertain myself and child,
back to open roads.

It should have been leaning
forward,
into the oncoming world.
